In the last two season, they've pushed Mayo, Galway and the Rossies to within an inch of their lives. Sligo are a big step down from that, while New York are getting stronger all the time. I'd actually have them as favourites this weekend.

Thing is, we all know the visa situation with them. It cropped up with their hurlers a few years ago. If they beat Sligo, will every team they play be forced to travel to New York?

Also, if they go further, and they throw a fuss about saying half their players are illegal (as the hurlers did), then is it just me or is that not a bit of a national broadcast to the American emigration officials?

This is something we've been kind of beating this down the road with the last number of years, but you wonder will is start throwing up some uncomfortable issues for the GAA should New York do the unthinkable and actually win a game??

I'm sure a GAA solution to a GAA problem will be concocted. I fully expect Sligo to beat them though. Wasnt that long ago they beat Galway and Mayo in the championship

Sure weren't they supposed to beat Roscommon last year but they took a 16 point batin' instead...hardly 'within an inch of their lives' sort of stuff.

The same thing as happened when the hurlers won - they'll withdraw from the competition - or be told to withdraw from the competition.
Abut five years ago the New York hurlers beat derry in the Ulster SHC and were to travel to Caseent Park for the Ulster final. All but about three of the starting 15 were illegal so they wouldn't have got back into the states. Antrim ended up going out to New York to play them in October of that year to get the final played.

I'd assume if they kept winning they'll end up playing more matches :)

As for the issue of guys living there illegally there's not much you can do about that, the law is the law after all (although I think there should be some way the GAA could make a deal with the American embassy to allow less scrutiny for players so the purposes of sport).

And who knows, maybe one day if the Irish diaspora end up setting up more GAA clubs in places like Boston, Chicago etc we might see an All-American championship like the All-Ireland championship and New York might not have to compete in Ireland.
