A boozed-up motorist mowed down a young woman while serving his THIRD road ban, it emerged yesterday.
Paddy Cash had sunk a cocktail of around 25 drinks on the night he ploughed into tragic arts student Kelly Gregan.
Wexford Circuit Criminal Court heard how the 25-year-old speed nut hadn’t even braked as he hit his victim on Gorey’s crowded Main Street in the early hours of October 24, 2010.
Gda Eamonn O’Sheil revealed Cash had just downed seven pints and ten bottles of Guinness — plus eight Aftershock, vodka and Guinness cocktails — during a six-hour binge.
The local man, who was disqualified from driving at the time, was later spotted by cops racing through a junction with the headlights of his car switched off.
During the high-speed chase that followed, Cash drove so fast that the three garda cars were unable to record the registration of his Renault Laguna.
Despite nightclub revellers spilling out on the main street, witnesses told how Cash’s car appeared to pick up speed seconds before it fatally slammed into 20-year-old Gregan.
In his garda statement, the dad-to-be admitted having noticed his passenger door window was shattered.
But he claimed to have had no idea about what happened and drove on — later setting his car alight in a lane way outside the town.
Sentencing Cash to seven years in prison with the final two years suspended, Mr Justice Thomas Teehan dismissed his story.
He said Cash had seen the University of Limerick student crossing the road but chose to keep going without attempting to slow down.
Judge Teehan also revealed the defendant, who had 28 road traffic related offences on his record, had been banned from driving on three previous occasions.

I am not going to say alot on this, i admit that i have driven after a fair few pints and am not proud of it. But i never drove at speed through busy streets, drove at speed with Gardai in pursuit.
I am ashamed of our Justice system today, a new sickening low has being reached imo.
Thoughts and sympathies with the family and friends of this poor young girl. May she rest in peace.

Hard to disagree with you carryharry, a second blow for that unfortunate young lady's family and friends, and it appears there's little can be done about it.

It's just mindblowing, isn't it? Rip the state off, have a plan in place to pay back what you owe and you still get more than you would for doing what this lad did.
He should have gotten a minimum of twenty years and should have had to serve every single second of it.
And I say that as someone who has never sat in the driver's seat after even a mouthfull of anything alcoholic.

While the diesel launderers only get small fines, must be all that good work they are doing for the peace process

The only people held to account in this country are those that actually take the law seriously in the first place. If you hit a thug a smack after he happy slapped you going down the road you'd be hit with a massive fine and a suspended sentence. The thug would get another suspended sentence to run concurrent with his existing suspended sentences. This country needs a complete overhaul of government and justice system as neither is fit for purpose.
Horrendous that a young girl enjoying a night out should lose her life while this clown will be back in the pub in 2-3yrs.

I sincerely hope the DPP appeals this sentence as being too lenient.

Was talking to a Guard I know the other day. He said they were called in for a meeting in the last week where they were told not to bother pulling travellers or foreigners as they pay no heed to court or fines.
In other words, Mr taxpayer can pay the bills here aswell. Fcukin joke.
