I see the Indo has a special supplement out tomorrow giving their opinions on the greatest GAA teams of the last fifty years. Anyone care to pre-empt them and give their own views? I guess the top two will be easy to pick although it will be interesting to see which will be put at number one.
I'm guessing to rouse a bit of controversy they will opt for Kilkenny 2006-2012 in first place ahead of Micko and the boys, something I wouldn't agree with myself.
If I had to pick a top five it would be:
1) Kerry 1975-86
2) Kilkenny 2006-2012
3) Kerry 2000-09
4) Tyrone 2003-2008
5) Clare 1995-1999

1 and 2 are indisputable imo, after that it's highly debatable. You're obviously a Clare man (!) though they have a right to be in the shake up for top 5.
Others of note
Dublin mid to late 70s
Meath late 80s
Cork mid to late 70s
Galway mid to late 80s

On what basis would you put Clare '95-99 ahead of Cork '75-79, Offaly '94-2000, Dubs '74-'79, Meath '87-90, Cork '87-90?

Do you mean last 50 years Hermit?
I'd go
1.Current KK team
2.Kerry 75-86
3.Tipp 60s hurling team ( auld man always says they were the best ever n he doesnt like tipp!)
4.Clare 95-02 (Im biased - most of them played in 02 final)
5.Kerry current team
6. Tyrone 03-08
7. Offaly 94-2000
8.Cork 76-78
9. Meath 87-91
10. Galway hurlers 86- 90
flip its hard, KK had great team in early 70s, cork footballers fro 87-93 as well were very good. dubs too at the time.

Kerry actually, but always had a soft spot for the banner in hurling. Of course you also can throw in Down and Galway in 60s, Tipperary in the 60s, Meath 1996-2001, Galway 1998-2002.
I would have Waterford 2000-2008 in the ring as well, even though they never made the big breakthrough. I always thought they were perhaps greatest team never to win the All Ireland.

Just personal bias I suppose, nothing else. Always had a gra for Ger's men in the 1990s as a young hurling fan from north Kerry.

Thanks Banner, fixed that! This league final is a massive disappointment so said I'd entrain myself trying to get a debate going on here!

No bad tam mentioned so far! Very hard really but for me no dpubt about the top team in each code as mentioned above. After that it's a fair fight. They'll probably have numerous different pundits giving their lists? I doubt they'll go for one definitive list.

one sided games usually awful to watch but with kk i always find it interesting cos they never let up and love destroying any team they see as a threat. they obviously went soft on us 2 weeks ago!
Greatest ever team for me, can see their main lads finish with 10 Celtic crosses or more.

Ya your right there probably is no arguing with the top two. I would put Kerry ahead of Kilkenny because I think Kerry achieved what they did at a time when they had some serious competition from the likes of Cork, Dublin, Offaly and even a fine Roscommon team. In contrast, most of this great Kilkenny's team success came at a time of decline in hurling when, until Tipperary in 2009, there was no one really able to live with them. But again that is my own personal opinion and bias, and they were/are a magnificent team.

1. Kilkenny 2000 - ?
2. Kerry 75 - 86
Picked Kilkenny over Kerry as in my view hurling at the highest level is a better sport and much more difficult to master than football
3. Tipperary 61 - 71, awesome team that with the same level of training and preparation would give no 1 a good run for their money
4. Galway 64 - 66. Best Galway team in either code I ever saw, they were a joy to watch.
5. Cork 76 - 78
6. Galway 85 - 90
7. Dublin 74 - 83 (underrated because of how good Kerry were)
8. Kilkenny 72 - 75
9. Clare 95 - 98
10. Kerry 2000 - 2009

It should be Kilkenny from 2000 to 2012 if anything.
I would imagine that Kerry retained more players through the full period from 1975 to 1986 than Kilkenny did from 2000 to 2012. Pat Spillane, Ogie Moran, Mikey Sheehy, Ger Power, Paudie O Shea and most people reckon John Egan should have been there. Go forward to 1978 and Jack O'Shea, Charlie Nelligan etc were still there in 1986.
Kilkenny have only Henry Shefflin and Noel Hickey there now from 2000, though from 2002 they probably have a few more

The Independent arent naming the best teams i.e. Kerry 1975-86 etc they are naming the best 15 from each county since 1962.
It would be diffiuclt for me to do this for Offaly as I have only been going to matches sionce the mid 90's
These were the teams of the millenium for Offaly named back in 2000 by the Offaly Express
FOOTBALL
Martin Furlong
Paddy McCormack Greg Hughes Johnny Egan
Eugene Mulligan Nick Clavin Mickey Brady
Willie Bryan Sean Foran
Johnny Cooney Kevin Kilmurray Tony McTeague
Mick Casey Matt Connor Brendan Lowry
Damien Martin
Aidan Fogarty Eugene Coughlan Martin Hanamy
Brian Whelahan Pat Delaney Ger Coughlan
Joachim Kelly Johnny Pilkington
Johnny Dooley Paddy Molloy Pat Carroll
Johnny Flaherty Padraig Horan Joe Dooley
I am almost certain all of them played post 1962.
You could probably argue Cathal Daly,Niall McNamee,Vinny Claffey,Ciaran McManus and Finbarr Cullen might be in contention for the Offaly team since that team was named. The likes of Rory Hannify,Shane Dooley might be in contention for the hurling since that team was named but because all those I have mentioned although top class players they wouldnt get near cnsideration due to lack of team success

1) Kerry 75-87..just their style of play and all time greats.
2) Kilkenny 2006 onwards
3) Cork 82-86 ..better in my view that 70s Cork Team, great stylists like Fenton.
4) Meath 86-91 Just a great team.
5) Galway 85-91 wonderful side who should have won more.
Very difficult task as plenty of others could have made it too just not enough room..honourable mentions to Cork 87-93..brilliant football side and reached 4 finals in a row, Tipp 87-91, wonderful side to watch with some great great hurlers. Cork 75-79, fab side who completed 3 in a row.

Ah I see, that would be difficult alrite! The Kerryman's millennium team 1950-1999 was:
1. Charlie Nelligan
2.Jimmy Deenihan
3. John O'Keeffe
4.Donie O'Sullivan
5.Páidí O'Sé
6.Tim Kennelly
7.Seamus Moynihan
8.Jack O'Shea
9.Mick O'Connell
10. Ger Power
11.Ogie Moran
12.Pat Spillane
13.Mikey Sheehy
14.Eoin 'Bomber' Liston
15.Maurice Fitzgerald
Like yourself Offaly, I would only have seen Kerry teams from mid 1990s on. I think I would go with
1 Diarmuid Murphy, 2 Marc O'Se 3 Mike McCarthy 4 Tom O'Sullivan 5 Tomas O'Se 6 Seamus Moynihan 7 Eamon Fitzmaurice
8 Tommy Griffin (still great even in 1992!) 9 Dara
10 Mike Frank (got to stick him somewhere) 11 Declan O'Sullivan 12 Paul Galvin
13 Gooch 14 Johnny Croweley 15 Maurice Fitz

Who would be replaced in that Kerry Millenium team by the team since then.Declan O'Sullivan and Gooch certainly would.Would all 3 O'Se's get in Dara O'Se would probably miss out due to O'Connell and Jacko being such legends. Would Galvin be in consideration

I'd have Galvin on any Kerry team of any era myself. Maybe Dara would have to settle for spot on the bench, but Tomas and Marc should make it!

@Fraisercrane,
You've strung out some heroic Offaly names there. Great stuff!
I've not examined ur hurling 15 enough yet!
In your football 15, it does bother me that there is no Sean Lowry!
Why? Not even a mention.
You're obviously from the 71-72 era. Lowry was on the panel in '71 and swept in
at no. 6 (Clavin's leg was broken afaik.. ) in '72.
Sean Lowry played loads of football from his Offaly beginnings(1970?)
to his Mayo retirement in 1985. In between he won 3 AI medals
( 7 Leinsters) and 2 All-Stars (one at 14, one at 6). Has any other Offaly footballer
received All-Stars in defence or attack?
So! Not that pretty but my! God almighty effective, was SL. I was at that
'82 final. Offaly won it for many reasons. But..
Where was the ball when the final whistle was blown? In whose hands?
We can all wallow in what we'd like footballers to be. From 1974 'til now, I've
seen many (just missed ur 71/72 winners), but few better than Sean Lowry!
You've made many great players, and I cannot disagree!
But where is Sean Lowry?

I think the Cork 75-79 side has to be in ahead of the 82-86 side when you think it had Gerald and Charlie Mac, Ray Cummins, John Horgan and Denis Coughlan. I also think the Tyrone team of the last decade has to be in there - perhaps instead of the Galway side who, as you say, should have won more

Shoulderghost, you need to reread his post. The Offaly teams listed are those from the Offaly Express millenium teams named in 2000. (He also says he's only been going to games from mid-90s on, so how is he "obviously from the 71-72 era"?)
