Clonlara is the venue this Sunday for the meeting of neighbours Clare and Tipperary in a challenge game to mark the official opening of the new pitch.
For Tipperary it will be a chance to fine tune their preparations for their upcoming clash with Limerick in a fortnights time.It is expected that both sides will be fielding strong teams.

Throw in time is 6.45 and all are welcome.

If you can get to O'Briens Bridge go that route.
Once through the village and over the bridge turn left at the crossroads.
Your on the back road to Limerick now.Go about 1.5 miles and you'll come to a crossroads.Left and over the bridge and your into the village.Turn right in the village and the pitch is down about 400yds behind the church. If your early you'll get parking around the church if not stick it somewhere around the village.
And you can go into Mashen for a pint afterwards!

Not so sure how strong Tipp may be Coach, there are a round of Senior club fixtures for all divisions down for Saturday and Sunday.

Lot of club matches on this weekend, Tipp won't have a full panel going to this I'd say.

Thanks Time.

Happy with that result considering there was a heavy number of U21 playing.

Tipp 2-13. Clare 1-15

Andrew Fahy.   Had a decent game. Could have made a better attempt to save the second goal that was struck by McGrath ~ 23m out.
Mark Early.  Thought he had a solid game.
Domhall O'Donovan. My man of the match. His clearances and ball delivery were excellent. Also got the point of the game.
Conor Cooney. Solid enough and chipped in with a fine point from play. Unlucky not to get a second.
Pat Kelly. Got on the ball alot but had his hands full with Callinan who scored ~ 1-4 from play off him.
Nickey O'Connell (Capt). In and out of the game and didn't hold the centre when out of it. Overall solid enough.
Liam Markham. Good game but could do with delivering the ball sooner.
Brian O'Connell. Great to see him back and looking very fit.  Pity he wasn't given the full 70. Did very well and will improve the more training he gets. Scored a fine point.
Cathal Chaplin. Did ok.
Camin Morey. In and out of it. Was switched with Keane on a few occasions. Seems to be struggling to get up to this level.
Jonathan Clancy. Had a good game.
Diarmuid McMahon. Good to see him back too and should have been left on for the 70.
Peter Duggan. Certainly not a corner forward. Would have preferred to have seen him on the wing.
John Conlon. He received the official man of the match award! He had a very difficult night and probably worked the hardest on the field. He was our only forward in the full forward line for 80% of the second half.
Daire Keane. In and out of the game but played way better on the wing.

Our first touch apart from O'Donovan's was rubbish tonight. Conlon is wasted in the full forward line and how Davy expects him to win ball on his own from 2 and 3 backs is beyond me. The plan was to work the ball out to mid field and feed Conlon all night long. This didn't work apart from winning a few frees. Don't think the latter scored from play.
Keane scored a point when he played in the half forward line but was moved back in after that. Lynch scored from the half forward line. With the exception of these few scores that's all that was really attempted. Our lads had ample opportunities to score from out the field but time and time again the ball was worked towards Conlon!
Very frustrating to watch. Conlon did struggle on Sherlock for the most part.
The game was marginally a tad bit better than a typical challenge game.
Ryan got our only goal from a superbly taken 21 yard free.
From listening to Fitzy he was driving on the lads with regards to work rate. I was in Cusack Park on Friday night and saw the Clare lads play backs and forwards. It was all about getting the ball into the full forward line too.
From a Tipp point of view Callinan was their only threat. I think he scored something like 1-10 of their total.

Negatives:
Not taking our chances to score from out the field.
Conlon in the full forward line when we need him out further.
First touch.

Positives:
McMahon and O'Connell back and will add to the team.
Creating scoring opportunities
Work rate.

Fair play to Clonlara and a fine setup they now have. The field is possibly one of the best around. The whole event was well marshalled with parking not an issue. Complimentary refreshments were laid on in the community centre and was a nice touch.

Great idea having Pat O'Connor from Ahane ref it as a neutral. He let the game flow as best he could.

Sherlock and Maher at corner back had an excellent game. The two lads put their bodies on the line throughout. Noel McGrath was very quiet and tended to roam all over the field. Callinan gave an exhibition and was never selfish.

I think you have fairly summed it up. On a minor thing I thought the score was 2.12 to 1.14. A point win for Tipp anyway. In these games the performance is what is important and in my view no one from Clare could be happy with that performance. They are still at this passing game and I don't think they put one good passing move together. Only a couple of points from play until the last 10 mins when lads like D.0'D. and Cooney at the back got so frustrated with the forwards and had a cut themselves. It is not that the forwards did not get chances, they did but time and time again lost possession while passing the ball. One gets the impression that the forwards are terrified to have a go at going for a score for fear of missing it so instead will over do the passing. D.O'D was my man of the match also and I agree with you re Conlon. Well done to Clonlara GAA fine pitch and every thing well organised.

Tipperary 2-12 Clare 1-14
By Gerry Quinn
Monday, May 14, 2012
Tipperary edged out their Clare hosts by a point in an entertaining senior hurling challenge at the official opening of the Clonlara GAA facilities last night.
Seamus Callanan was the star man for the winners, hitting 1-8 in an impressive display and his accuracy helped the Premier County to a two points interval lead (0-9 to 0-7).

Callanan had 1-1 within two minutes of the restart as Tipperary began to pull clear. But Davy Fitzgerald’s men never buckled and even though they conceded another goal, in the 55th minute from Noel McGrath, they tagged on some good points to remain in touch.

A goal by Clare sub Colin Ryan from a 20m free with five minutes remaining kept them in contention. Ryan had another effort deep in injury time to snatch the win but this attempt flew over the bar.

Scorers for Tipperary: S Callanan (1-8, 3f, 2 65’s), N McGrath (1-0), S Curran (0-3), D Collins (0-1).

Scorers for Clare: C Ryan (1-3) 1-2 f’s, J Conlon (0-6) f’s, B O’Connell, J Clancy, D Keane, D O’Donovan, C Morey, C Cooney (0-1) each.

TIPPERARY: D Gleeson, D Maher, J Coughlan, C Coughlan, T Stapleton B Stapleton, S McGrath, J Woodlock, J Ryan, S Curran, S Callanan, L McGrath, D Collins, N O’Meara.

Sub: B O’Meara for Callanan (66).

CLARE: A Fahy, M Early, D O’Donovan C Cooney, L Markham , N O’Connell (Capt.), P Kelly, C Chaplin, B O’Connell, D McMahon. J Clancy, C Morey. P Duggan, J Conlon, D Keane.

Subs: F Lynch for McMahon (51), S Golden for O’Connell (51), C Ryan for Duggan (51), P Donnellan for Keane (62), P O’Connor for Conlon (61).

Referee: P O’Conor (Limerick).

Time!!!

Have to agree with you, very frustrating to watch. Very hard to judge a challenge match, but being so close to championship, I would have expected more.

Of the first 15 today, here are my summations;

Fahy - safe, but had no real save to make. Had no chance for 2nd goal, come on, ball was worked from the Tipp full back line all the way down the field, without a challenge from a Clare player.

Earley - good game, but has been infected with the ridiculous "short out of defence" game that is being preached.

O'Donovan - Agreed, has the best first touch of all the backs, but his clearance / distribution seems to reach opposition more times than team mates. And his direct opponents are putting up decent scores. Score of the match though, great point on the left wing.

Cooney - No, no, no.... Average at best.

Kelly - Worse than Cooney, move on.

Nicky O'Connell - In and out, yes, couldn't agree more. And has been the same all year, and for the past few years. Has chalked up big scores from placed balls that have overshadowed his overall performances.

Markham - Very good today, the only player that looked like he could hold his own in the modern game. Won possession well and wasn't afraid to deliver it long which seems to go against the grain in the current Banner set up.

Brian O'Connell - Suprisingly green at times, lack of match fitness very evident. One of the older, experienced players that's still needed to bring on the young fellas. Jury is out at the moment.

Chaplin - Again, no, no, no.

Morey - Great point taker, if allowed to shoot for scores. Seemed programmed to go backwards when 40 yards from goal in order to find a team mate in a "better" scoring position!!! Very frustrating to watch and first touch was dissoppointing.

Clancy - I feel sorry for him. Multi talented but used by the past three management teams in a creative role that he doesn't seem capable of fulfilling. Same tonight, drifted between 45 and 21, in an attempt to create space but ended up getting in the way!!!! Feed him, four steps, score!!!

McMahon - Like Markham, looked comfortable. Seems to enjoy being a work horse and very affective in that role. Like BOC, is needed to bring on the young lads.

Duggan - Needs time. Three years before he's physically ready at this level. Very evident this evening. Too many times shoved off the ball when, in fairness, got himself into good possession winning positions. And, yes, probably needs to be on the wing.

Conlon - Very effective. But not a fan of the way he stops once he gets to the ball.It just invites defenders in. Tends to fall down a bit once tackled and that won't wash come championship time. Would like to see him on the half forward line though.

Keane - Didn't seem interested. One handed pokin' at the ball, in hope rather than with any conviction. Very dissappointing.

Aside from that, Clonlara have to be complimented on a well organised event. Pitch and grounds looked superb. Well done to all involved.
