Ring and Kenny the latest in a long line ..

http://www.independent.ie/national-news/revealed-surge-in-lotto-cash-grants-for-kennys-home-base-3102280.html

And then we have gov minister fighting over where to put the children's hospital. Leo wants it on his patch(abbotstown) and Reilly wants it closer to home(near airport)

Some bluffers this crowd... but, sure, sauce for the goose...

Are you that surprised Speebs? The fact that when Clowen was in charge Offaly was the biggest recipient comes as no surprise. Their bubble needs to be burst big time and by voting a big no it will hasten the end of this shower of chancers.

Larkin - I wasn't expressing any surprise and I dont think the allocation of lotto funds has anything to do with the fiscal treaty.
Kenny and Ring have already creamed off additional money for this cycle route called the 'Greenway' - think about 2m from Ring's department coffers announced last year.
Kenny also jumped onto Michael O'Leary's shoulders as soon as those extra flights from Knock last year.

as far as i know the Greenway has been up and running since before FG got into government so they cant be blamed for 'creaming' off money as you put it and even if they did, it is generating more spin-off money in the local economy (bike rental companies have spring up, pubs and eating houses all along the route are loving it) than any sports centre or bulls**t floodlights ever would

Yes it was up and running but that was the tail end of a money spending splurge and yet - despite the straight jacket of austerity - Ring's department find plenty of funds to extend this project.

Doesn't matter which party is in power. Nature of Irish politics lends itself to parish pump.

An Irish minister or TD could deliver world peace and economic stability and wealth but would lose his seat if he didn't "deliver" for his local patch.

You can be sure the projects above will deliver votes for Enda and Ring come the next election.

A community in East Cork approached Ned O' Keeffe for support with new school funding - Ned told them to f*** off because he got no votes from their ballot boxes at the 2007 election.

At least he was honest - other politicians would tell the community that he/she would do as requested and then ignore the issue.

Anyone complaining about this is just jealous that their own area doesent get these perks.
99% of Irish people would look after there own at everyone elses expense if they were in the same position, thats just the way that modern Irish are.

Sums it up.
You didn't hear Enda, Gilmore etc berating likes of John O' Donoghue or Bertie for pet projects in the locality because they knew that at some point they would get their heads in the trough too.

Even SF/IRA will stay quiet on this one as they too have their own projects lined up in the event of them holding balance of power in 3-4 years time.

we could get into the rights and wrongs of the greenway. i myself think its a great facility, costing relatively little to construct (the infrastructure to build on, cut and fill etc was already there) and generating more revenue in the local economy than it cost to build.

As pet projects go its not the worst of them - at least it will pay its way.

but the bigger picture as outlined by other posters is the way the political system is set up.

when you have people who cannot figure out the process for passport applications running to their local TD for 'help', instead of going to either their local Counciller or the -ing passport office itself, then the system cannot work.

Most of the work of the TDs should be taken care of by the Local Councillors in our many many Local Authorities.

If i became a TD i wouldnt want to be bothered with --------ing around getting potholes filled for some oul hoor on a s**tty backroad, or 'securing' funding for an extension to the local creche.

If i was a TD it would be because i would have the intention of looking at the bigger issues, the bigger picture and ensuring that the welfare systems in place ensure that everyone gets whats they are entitled to, no more no less and not to have this nonsense of people thinking they can waste the time of a national politician in trying to get 'the sick' for micky down the road.

How you divorce TDs from being glorified County Councillors i dont know, but it has to happen at some point for them to be effective in their jobs and to have a proper grasp on the national issues.

Michael Ring is the best / worst example of small town / parish pump / gombeen politics you could ever get. He is loved in Mayo because he gets s**t done, but the s**t he gest done mostly isnt his job!

You are being a little circumspect with the truth there speebs, they moved from ninth up to fifth in the list. That is hardly creaming in the the O'Donoghue and Mc Daid FF sense. Indeed one could say that compared to their predessors they are being remarkably restrained.
The only reason Mayo languished in ninth on the list in the first place was because they had the nerve to elect three Fine Gaelers.
FF wasn't going to pay for anything that would permit blueshirts to claim the credit.

im glad you said that Taebags and maybe 5 years ago jealousy might have been the standard reaction - particuarly if your local club lost out so money could be poured into pet projects in the county of the Ministers with most influence.
However, we live in totally different times now.
for the record I have no reason to feel jealous although the complaints being made by some of our local TDs are in real 'pot and kettle' territory. The Clare lads were serious grabbers in their day as well...
