Listening to a documentary on rte radio on monday evening reminded me of the goings on in the hurling championship of 1998,we had the Clare/Wat game and the replay where there was some premature pulling before the ball was thrown in.Colin Lynch getting 3months suspension. Then we had the AI s/f between Offaly and Clare and the match blown up early and the Offaly supporters staging a sit down on the croke Park pitch seeking a replay. The game was replayed in Thurles and Offaly won and went on to beat KK in the AI final. All the stuff about the referees and threats to burn their houses etc, unreal.
By the way,was this site going then,it would be interesting to see a few posts on it.

My own abiding memory of the 1998 Championship comes way before any of the controversial matches.
Leinster semi final and Wexford were playing Offaly. Wexford were going well that year. There was a buzz around the county. It was the 200 year anniversary of the 1798 rising and the hurlers were wearing jerseys that commemorated that. It was 2 years since we were All Ireland champs, we were reigning Leinster Champions and had the nucleus of a good side with a few youngsters coming through. Hell we even had the Tour De France that year.
In the match itself we were dominant but just couldnt shake Offaly off, we couldnt get the 3 or 4 points clear and of course Johnny Dooley stepped up with a late winning goal for Offaly and they won by a point.
I remember Eugene Furlong striking Dooley as he was coming back out celebrating the goal and my father turning to me and saying "its a bit late to be using the timber now"
A lot of Wexford people genuinely thought we had the winnings of an All Ireland that year, unfortunately the back door system only catered for running up provincial finalists back then.

My abiding memory is flying back to London after the semi final defeat to KK a little bit under the weather.I fell asleep and when I woke up the guy sitting across from me said it had been a long and hard day.I agreed with him and said we were sure to win an all Ireland in the next few years.

besides the sitting on the pitch after the game was blew up 5 minutes plus early, offaly and clare hurl 3 great games tough
hard and no questions asked hits and belts were given by both side and taken without a word if it happen today this site would go haywire.
yes you could say we were lucky we jimmy cooney blowing up early but offaly played some hurling that year, the replay in thurles plus Sid Whelehans 1-6 display in the all ireland again the cats.
going back to the last minute again wexford in the leinster
semil Johnny Dooleys rocket of a shot off the ground was some goal.
waterford and clare also had some battle and the waterford kilkenny semil another game that went to the wire.

I remember Johnny Pilkington giving an interview about 3 years ago where he says in that Offaly accent of his that Duignan should still be suspended for his wild pull in the Clare game. That comment always makes me laugh now when I think of the 98 season!

No but an all-ireland semi going to a replay when ref made a balls of the time with one team well ahead and didn't look like being caught. Clare shouldn't have agreed to the replay. I think we would have won an All-Ireland that year and that was more or less the end of that great team.
Some very good games and real excitement in the lead up to each match around that time. Almost anybody could beat anybody else on the day only a puck of a ball between teams. In recent years most people know who is going to win the game before throw in with very few shocks.

Favorite summer of hurling for me and many a waterford fan I would think....
My lasting memory is from the league final. Brought the girlfriend, a Melbourne girl and die hard Aussie rules fane, to her first hurling game. A Waterford lad, Tony I think, went to block down a ball and the sliotar hit him square in the eye and rebounded about 30 yards into the stand right next to us. Girfriend, a nurse, thought he was dead. Took him a minute or so to get back up and into position in fairness...
After that she was hooked on hurling but, unfortunately for her, she was by that stage a Waterford fan.
Later on, via an epic couple of Munster finals and a dream first trip to Croker (her and me) against Galway, she cried after the semi. Never mind, I told her. Thats a great young team. There's an all-ireland in them for sure....

You are right, one would have thought that team would have gone on to win an All Ireland, by the time ye did get to the All Ireland a lot of them guys were gone past their sell by date.

Its not a year any Clare fan looks back on fondly. Im still very bitter about it. I feel we were the best team in Ireland that year but were screwed beyond belief.
The best championship i remember for entertainment was 2001. Easily the most exciting, lots of close games and nearly every team that played in it could have won it. We had a royal battle with Tipp in Cork and if we had got over that we'd probably have went the whole way. As it happened a young Eoin Kelly was the difference that day and Tipp went on to win Liam, deservedly so!

If there are any Laois or Kilkenny fans out there they might remember this or tell me if my memory is playing tricks with me.
I seem to remember though listening to the car radio and Laois a goal up on Kilkenny in the Leinster championship and the match going into injury time when as usual the Cats get a late goal to draw it.
I knew Waterford were going to be decent that year under Gerald and having that sinking feeling that it might come back to haunt us that Kilkenny were still in the championship.
Of course Kilkenny won the replay and the rest as they say is history!!

I would not say I am bitter but very disappointed, did not hang around that long after the match in Croker as I had a train to catch but believed we were in the All Ireland as up to then the refs decision was final, but i do remember a lot of enjoyable days that year also, winning the Munster championship for the 3rd time in that decade, very wet day. The brilliant performance in the Munster semi against Cork. Great days traveling to Croker the great performance against Offaly the 2nd day and then of course the disappointment after. Of course we have several discussions about what happened and the different theories still goes on to this day as this discussion highlights.
We had a great team at that time, a team we were very proud of, great memories. They did deserve a lest an other All Ireland but it wasn't to be. Still and all there is more to be proud of than to regret, how we would wish those days to return.

I didn't realize that was 1998,I was at that match and Laois were very unlucky not to have beaten KK.I used to go to an awful lot of hurling games back then, was that the same day that Meath put Offaly to the pin of their collar to win, still talking hurling.
I was at the Clare/Offaly games and I can still see the Offaly hordes coming on to the pitch to stage their sit in,you would have to admire them, lesser supporters might just have let it be and then there would be no replay and no AI for them that year.It was a big deal for me getting tickets for the Clare/Offaly game in Thurles.I had to ring the Meath Co Sec and he arranged for me to collect the tickets in Croke Park as Meath were not getting involved in tickets for the replay, many tel calls.

That radio documentary was great and reminded me of the famous 1998 championship. After decades in the doldrums Waterford were back as a hurling force. I was working in a sports shop in Waterford at the time and the Waterford jerseys were in great demand for the first time ever I'd say!
Then we had the Clare v Waterford games and all the controversy that followed the replay. There were huge crowds at the games and great excitement all summer. Offaly who lost Babs Keating along the way came through the back door under Michael Bond to beat Clare in a 2nd replay after Jimmy Cooney blew up too early and then went on to win it.
I doubt if there'll everbe a championship like it again.

Meath played Offaly in the first round of the Leinster hurling championship in 98 as the curtauin raiser to the Meath Offaly football match. In the hurling Offaly hammered Meath scored about 4-28.Meath hammered Offaly in the football match later 3-10 to 0-7

Frasier is right, Offaly played Meath in Croke PArk in a hurling/football double bill that drew a massive crowd.
Faugh a Ballagh isn't far off the mark. Yes, Laois ran Kilkenny mighty close, but Kenny O'Shea's late goal snatched a 3-point win for Kilkenny. Offaly beat Wexford with the aid of Johnny Dooley's goal in the main event that day. I remember Wexford with the commemorative jerseys with the pike on them. The 1798 bi-centenary was a big thing for them and they were all set to win the All-Ireland. Then Enda McEvoy reminded them that they were beaten that year as well.
Laois also ran Kilkenny close in 1995, the Cats holding on after Joe Dermody saved them with a late save. Then, in 1999 along came Brian Cody. And Henry Shefflin. kIlkenny showed Laois no mercy on 1999. And that was the end of those great Leinster semi-final days.

Laois played Kilkenny in Croke Park and it was the curtain raiser to the Wexford-Offaly game. The first match was a close affair but it definitely wasn't a draw as the Cats won by 3-11 to 1-14. Laois were outstanding that day and were very unlucky not to get at least a draw. In the second game the parallels with the 1982 All-Ireland Football Final were uncanny as Johnny Dooley scored a late goal to enable Offaly triumph by 1-15 to 0-17 (same scoreline as that legendary '82 spectacle!)
