Saw this on the broadsheet.ie website. Lived in Oz for a number of years, we have a fairly bad rep over there and to be fair its well deserved. Some lads seem to loose the run of themselves completely over there, I reckon homesickness has a big part to do with it.

Notice from Western Australia Police – Irish Antisocial Behaviour In Perth

9:58 am May 8, 2012 Ewok

Ronan Murphy writes:

My friend living and playing some ball in Perth received this email from his local GAA club:

Hello fellow Finbarrians

The following message is not only for your perusal, but also one which you can pass on to all your fellow Irish friends here in Perth.

The WA police are extremely unhappy and appalled by the antisocial behaviour which is taking place all too often on the streets and in the pubs across Perth and its suburbs, especially in the Northbridge area [above]. Even Rental Agencies are not as willing to rent properties to Irish people here in Perth, as they are getting destroyed during parties, and being left in terrible conditions once vacated.

We have been advised, that over the next few weeks, the Perth Police will be, at random going around to all of the GAA Clubs and talking to club members, advising them of same. They want to get the message across to all Irish in Perth that what has been going on is just not acceptable, and if it continues there will be consequences.

Police will be adopting a Zero tolerance policy for any antisocial behaviour. If individuals don’t abide by the law, and take heed of move on notices, their visas WILL firstly be investigated, before court action, meaning that deportation would be the final conclusion. This is the last thing anyone of us or our fellow Irish counterparts here in Perth want.

This a very serious matter, and I hope that you and your friends will now be aware of the consequences should occurrences with the Police occur. Not something we are encouraging that is for sure.

Please spread the work to your fellow Irish, as this is affecting all of our reputations here not only the people who are causing the trouble.

Many Thanks for reading the above.

Regards

Linda H

I've lived here 12 years. Yes the Irish partake in anti social behaviour just as we do at home but it seems more socially accepted in Ireland.

However the Irish do not have a bad reputation. 99% of Australians have no visibility of the social antics of the young Irish. The average Australian doesn't live in Bondi, Coogee, Surfers or Fortitude Valley. They are areas dedicated to young people enjoying themselves as well as misbehaving no different to Salthill, Bundoran or the Templ Bar. The average Australian has more dealings with the Irish who have integrated and live in the suburbs.

Some of the states in Australia are over governed, there are laws for tieing your shoe laces so it is quite possible that the young lads, who are only doing what they'd do at home, that misbehave will be sent home.

I will say one thing, after living in some of the spots mentioned I would never rent a property to Irish. I know people will get precious about this but the dirtiest rentals I've ever been in have been over populated by young Irish

You are right when you say the average Australian deals with the Irish in the suburbs but the minority that live in the places you mentioned do absolute wreck and like it or not, it reflects badly on the rest of us. I rememeber reading the Morning Herald one day and they were discussing the Irish in Bondi and a local Aussie resident was quoted as saying "these guys wouldn't behave like animals if they were at home, what makes them think they can do it here"

Also we all know lads over there whon have bluffed their way into jobs, guys who did maybe a few weeks labouring during the school summer holidays and now in Oz try pass themselves off as brickies, plasterers, fitters etc. Its funny for all of about 2 minutes as these guys have'nt a clue what they are at and quickly get the sack. Must be very frustrating for the employer and then lads wonder why a brickie in Perth had "a no Irish need apply" ad in the paper a few weeks back.

There is just as many Germans, Brits and Yanks in Oz as there is Irish yet you rarely if ever hear of these nationalitys in the paper for anti social behaviour. We always seem to pass off petty acts of vadalism and drunken aggresion as lads "having the craic"

Young Aussies are well able to wreck a house and upset the neighbours when spending their year or two working in London.
My ex boss in London would never rent a property to Australians after he had a couple of bad experiences with them.

Not offering excuses mind - no doubt that Paddy does have an issue with the drink.

I have no doubt they do wreck the place and I also know how aggresive/competitive they can get while drunk but at the end of the day if you are in their country you have to abide by their laws.

It is amusing to think that Oirish people still get so p-rickly about the "No dogs, No Irish" signs that were on lodging houses in Britain in the 1950s.
As if British people just decided to randomly decided to discriminate against people from Eire as opposed to German or Dutch people.

Now over half a century later, it is still abundantly clear that this destructive and anti-social streak is still very much alive.
The thick and drunken Irish stereotype didn't just invent itself.

Is there a particular reason you decided to use "Oirish" in your statement above?

As for your statement about the Uk in the '50s the signs were for "no dogs, no irish, no blacks". There were sfa Germans and Dutch moving to the Uk for work during the '50s and '60s so your reference is hardly apt.

Why not go back to the time of the Famine and earlier and the cartoon representations of Irish people in the Uk newspapers... There are reasons for sterotyping and some of them are not because of represnetatives facts.

The Aussie (Perth) situation is becuase of specific issues that are cropping up over there, these relate to the age profile of the people going over, the financial circumstances and more importantly the tolerance we have to Alcohol in Ireland itself specifically within certain demographics.

I reckon the fact they're a bunch of fvcking gobsh!tes who are under the delusion that the world loves them because they're Irish and such great craic has a lot to do with it.

Nail on the head. That attitude has a lot to do with it too.

Well the Aussie International Rules teams always did their uptmost to engage in acts of criminality whenever they played us so maybe the Irish down there think thats the norm for that society.

Why is it only Irish in Australia that we hear this about?

Aren't there Irish in nearly every corner of the world these days? (thanks Bertie, FF and co.)

When the Oz real-estate bubble which was built on a commodity bubble explodes, which country will be the proud benefactor of the lads from the party-bus ?

At least the lads who've integrated down there have built a sustainable life for themselves. This reputation issue will then move on elsewhere.

Because Australia seems to be the country that attracts the most amount of wasters, and good time charlies. I know that we're pretty respected here in Canada, as lads that come over here, come to work and settle down (as opposed to going for the craic like Oz). Likewise in NZ, the Irish have a pretty solid rep.

Surprised this topic has died, ive had Newstalk on all day and there has been little else discussed, very little sympathy from anyone for the lads over there, will they have to make a few examples to quieten them or would that work. Nothing new in this of course, i spent 2 weeks in Bondi in 05 and it was absolutely mayhem, not that i was complaining back then.
