And a mad one in Brendan de Jonge @ 200-1 €2.50 e/w

Isn't this the place that was bought by a load of paddies during the boom? It all went t*ts up, of course. Must be hard watching for them (just the merest hint of begrudgery, schadenfreude)

Went for Outsiders myself:

Ben Crane, Graeme McDowell and David Toms. All have form in this and to be honest i think that counts for something here.

Donald will be close to winning this i feel and there's a couple more at good odds like Ernie i would probably have gone for. Stricker is also a decent bet at the odds.

Very very competitive field though. On form the bet that i will probably regret not taking is Louis at 40s. His last 3 competitions have been excellent - winning on the European tour and before that he lost the playoff at the Masters. Sawgrass can be a different animal though so im inclined to leave him this week.

I haven't seen the odds, but my picks for the week are: Sergio (past winner here), Louis Oosthuizen (on form lately), and Jim Furyk (I've been backing him a lot lately and he has to come though sometime)

This tournament does throw up surprise winners (Craig Perks, Paul Goydos) so we may be primed for another.

It'll be interesting to see how the tournament evolves in its newish May time slot. When it was held in March a lot of players viewed it as a warm up for the Masters. Not what the organizers of the self-styled "Fifth Major" had in mind, so they lobbied hard for a slot between the Masters and US Open.

going for three against the field myself.

hunter mahan backed him last week did not do great but a player who finds fairways and greens consistently and doing that you have to contend. 35to1

jason day. on his day as good as anyone. coming back from injury played well last week and top 6 here last year. 45to1

ben crane. finished top 6u here 3 years in a row up to last year. slow, methodical player who finds plenty fairways. 66to1
just on the minstrels post goydos did not win here sergio beat him in a playoff

That's right Parish Man on Goydos, thanks. I'd forgotten he eventually let it go. I remember him shooting a really low round and must have thought he hung on.

Minstrels point is well made though. The Players does throw up a few surprises. Aaron Baddeley is a player who does well here aswell looking at the last few years.

Should be a good tournament. If Tiger is going to make some sort of comeback after the Masters he'd want to be thinking of getting into a rhythm now. Missing the cut last week highlights a player under pressure if you ask me.

Winner here generally hasn't had the best putting stats or best driving results for the week .
The dominant trend is that the greens in regulation leader wins . It must suit Westwood at that rate , Ben crane Brian Davis have plenty form there, not so mcilroy or fowler . If molinari is fresh enough he could go well . Best of luck to anybody having a bet

Solid enough starts so far by Toms and Crane BT. Kevin Na the early leader so far @ -6.

Surprised that Loose Ball is the only one to fancy Westwood (in a manner of speaking, LB). He's been coming into form lately but admittedly seems to have a habit of failing to close the deal on the big occasion.

Well lads what ye think as the first round comes to a close?

Not really any of the big guns up at the top so imo it is wide open. Early yet i know but interesting leader board all the same.

Once you get through the first round of golf here under par or evens you should have a good enough shot at the weekend to be honest ch. Was watching earlier online and the commentators actually mentioned the fact that you're better just to be plugging along for the first round.

Poulter is in pretty good form of late and thats a decent round but equally so look at Matt Kuchar! Assuming he is carrying his Masters form he should be close. Ben Curtis has also hit a phenomenal run of form of late.

Hats off to Paddy H. Looks like he is beginning to come back into the reckoning. I wouldnt be surprised if he is being inspired towards a Ryder Cup place.

Too early to call anything significant. I wouldnt be surprised to see one or two of the big guns make inroads tomorrow!

Yeah Scott left a few out there alright, im disappointed with Kaymer as i thought he might shine this weekend. De Jonge did okay and his odds have halved into 100-1 so hopefully he will be the one to shine this weekend.

Still wide open and a lot of good players bunched around that -2 and -1 mark. Zach Johnson, Geoff Ogilvy. Should make for an interesting weekend.
I read or saw somewhere that they raised the perimeter of the 17th by a foot or two in some places to make it harder for balls to bounce off. Probably to encourage players to take dead aim at off-centre pins.

Looks like the lads going out in the morning have an advantage with the greens firming up as the day goes on. Chance of rain at the weekend so it could get messy! Westwood was my pick for the week but wasn't online yesterday. I think as it stands anyone at par or better is in there. Cut will be about that IMO. Good round by paddy, hopefully he can sustain it.

Anyone watching?

Seems Charlie Wie and Zach Johnson have burned the place up of the early starters but in general scoring seems tougher than yesterday.

Laird still leading on -9 through 14 with a good few 2 back on -7.

Still no real sign of the big boys in pursuit yet although Luke Donald has shot a -4 so far through 13.

Tiger will need to go low to catch up.

Yeah watching it closely. McIlroy going backwards- hopefully harrington can keep the irish interest alive with a good round today. Another 69 would be just perfect to keep him in contention.

Adam Scott is my pick this week - has won here before and seems to be driving and putting well.

Laird was doing good, then came 16, 17 and 18. Will be tough to bounce back from that. All the pundits are talking about tiger missing consecutive cuts for the first time in his life.
