Coming out publicly in favour of gay marriage would seem like a good way to go about it. To say it in Ireland , where it is the trendy thing to be in favour of , would lose him votes (and maybe enough to lose an election ) but in loolah fundamentalist Christian America ??? OK he would never get a vote from the evangelicals anyway but you also have the ordinary middle of the road church-going even Democrat leaning voter who will probably have another think about it.

It's a courageous move but somewhat inevitable since he convinced congress to repeal don't ask, don't tell. Draws a clear distinction between himself and Romney who is against not just gay marriage but any form of civil union for gays. The Republicans will eventually be on the wrong side of history on this one; according to a recent Gallup poll 70% of 18 - 34 year olds are in favor of same sex marriage as are 65% of Democrats and 57% of Independent voters. Clearly he will lose some voters on this issue but he will also now get overwhelming support from the gay community, including gays who would have voted Republican.
If the economy weakens over the Summer, as now looks very possible, Obama will have a hell of a time getting reelected. His best hope is to maximize the turnout from the demographic groups that are most likely to support him, younger voters, women, independent voters, all of whom favor same sex marriage.

If your figures are right it seems even more foolhardy. Only 65% of Democrats in favour of same sex marriage....so he is potentially alienating 35% of his core constituency. And 43% of Independents against it...The other aspect of it is that it will galvanise that sizeable proportion of evangelicals and Tea Party members who are resistant to Romney and who may have decided not to vote into swallowing their pride and actually going out to vote for him. From their perspective they will see Romney as the lesser of 2 evils. By raising the issue himself I think he has made it into an election issue and it didnt have to be one. I suppose overall liberals have been so disappointed with Obama's presidency he may have felt he needed to give them something to cheer about in order to mobilise them for the forthcoming campaign.

It's called leadership, something so rare in a politician these days it's hard to recognize. LBJ for all his flaws did the same in 1964 on the civil rights issue. The mood of the country is changing on marriage / civil union rights and most thinking people see through the hypocritical moralizing of the right wingnuts. The Newt is a prime example, dicarded his first wife becaue she wasn't pretty enough to be a first lady (ha, fcuking ha), led the campaign against Clinton while conducting a multi year affair on his second wife, and has the gall to preach to us on family values. Give me a break.
The poor evangelicals have no candidate really, on one hand you have the muslim born in Kenya and on the other hand the Mormon whose grandfather fled the US with his church to escape anti-polygamy laws and whose father was born in a polygamist commune in Mexico. Tough being an evangelist in God's country these days. In fairness to Obama he has promised not to make polygamy an election issue.

If he were trying to galvanise the base he would stay away from the same sex marriage issue. It is a deeply divisive issue even for a lot of Democrats.

Hes trying to get people excited about him again to bring out the vote. Even democrats that aren't in favour of gay marriage are not going to stay at home because of one issue.
If it was an example of leadership, he would have been in favour of gay marriage in the 04 senate run and 08 presidential election.

Leadership would be legislating for it, not washing your hands with it by saying its up to the states.
Empty words in an election year.

Those Twunts at Fox news have as a headline on their website that Obama has "Declared War on Marriage" by coming out in favour of gay marriage. What a bunch of imbeciles. He's dead right to stand behind it if that's what he believes in, and it's a brave move to do it, especially given the abuse and vitriol he's likely to encounter from those nutjobs down around the bible belt now. The latest is that N. Carolina have officialy criminalized the act of gay marriage, this being the state where marrying your own cousin is legal. Some people in the US would make you lose all faith in humanity. Not that it's just the States that have these nuts, they just seem to have a higher proportion.

Courageous it may be but prudent.. I have my doubts. Just reading there that in 7 key swing states there's a large majority against same sex marriage. It's not a deal breaker in the blue states but it could be in the ones he needs to win. In Ohio 52% against , 32% for ; North Carolina 61% against and 31% for ; Florida 53% against 34% for , to name just three. It's a very emotive issue and people who have an opinion on it tend to have a very strong one and certainly I can see those who are opposed to it pushing it higher up in their list of concerns than it really should be if they were being rational about it.

My opinion on the matter is who am I to judge a person and tell them who they should love. Reagan polluted a whole generation here with his deluded comments citing AIDS as God's way of punishing gays. What a silly old man. The World is changing and the lunatic element of the Republican party hate to admit it that future generations will be more inclined to vote for a more liberal candidate.
I'm sure the right will gather around Romney and support him, polls show that. They hate Obama and would rather see anybody else in The White House. BUT American President's have always been decided by Independents and I think they'll see through flip-flopper Mitt Romney.
Lough you mentioned about the left being dissapointed with Obama. I have to disagree with that. The right have been hell bent on blocking every bill that the President has tried to put through the house. I'm sick to death of hearing them say 'we'll do everything we can to make him a one term President'. Well I hope it comes back to bite them in the arse! I think it will.
