Lionel Messi called me 'negro', claims Everton's Royston Drenthe.
The Dutchman opposed the Argentinean on the pitch on a number of occasions during his time with Madrid and Hercules and said he always had off-the-ball tussles with the Catalan club's record goal scorer.

'We played against each other a lot, and we always had problems. You know what really bothers me? That tone with which he always called me "negro, negro",' Drenthe told Dutch magazine Helden.
The on-loan Everton man went on to say that even though the use of the term is common in South America, he struggled to deal with it.
'When I played against Barcelona with Hercules, I had the same problems with Messi again. Before the match, he gave me a hand and said, "Hola negro". He didn't shake my hand again after the match. I don't think he'll invite me to his birthday party.'
Liverpool striker Luis Suarez told an FA disciplinary committee that the term 'negrito', which he called Manchester United's Patrice Evra, was a term of endearment.
However, the FA deemed that it was racial abuse and banned the Uruguayan for eight Premier League matches earlier this season.

Other than at the end of this season when he got a bit frustrated I've never noticed Messi talking to anybody on the pitch, either his own team mates or anyone else. So I can't imagine he was engaging Drenthe in too much conversation, racist or otherwise.

I would be very surprised if Messi said that. But if we did I hope he is punished for it like Saurez. Would be shocked if he was punished though. I think we could see a bit of "double standards" if this story is true.

Why is he only bringing it up now if it's such a big deal? Hard not to see this as nothing but sensationalism.

"We played against each other a lot, and we always had problems." I can just see Messi going, "Royston who?, he played for which team now?"
I'm sure Drenthe was a really big problem for him.

Royston Drenthe is a clown trying to raise his profile to get a new club, he is trying to get his old club Feyrnood to come back for him, he was givena great chance by Everton to make a name for himself in EPL and blew it, late for training, drinking etc allegedly!
pity cos when he played he frightened defenders and scored a couple of belters but at this stage i am happy to say good riddance

Not going to happen - Spain, along with most other countries do not see racist words as any big deal. It's really only in the UK and here that the media and the establishment fall over themselves when the issue comes up.
You can deliberately break a fellow professional's leg in UK and probably get a lesser ban than you would for using a racist word.
