Early Newmarket efforts seals derby win
NEWMARKET ON FERGUS…………..2-19
CLARECASTLE…………….1-10
By Michael O Connor.
Newmarket showed signs of their brilliance and their weaknesses in equal measure in this early morning Clare cup outing against a weakened Clarecastle side on Saturday in Newmarket. When they were good they ripped through the Clarecastle rearguard but for most of the second half they hit wides, went for own scores and allowed Clarecastle to rally somewhat. Admittedly it is difficult to keep a high tempo for 60 minutes but against better opposition the winners would have struggled if they allowed their concentration to lapse at such an alarming rate.
Newmarket with the opening twenty minutes brushed aside the challenge of Clarecastle and were (2-8) to (0-2) clear. Clarecastle’s scores coming from Derek Quinn from play as the magpies were early leaders but this was as good as it for the visitors to Newmarket. Once again Colin Ryan was the impressive first half and hit two points and as Ryan hit a similar brace allied to a fine score from Eoin Hayes left the home side (0-6) to (0-2) ahead. A defining score in the ultimate result of the game fell to James Liddy who blasted past the despairing dive of dominant Clarecastle goalkeeper Jeff Coughlan. Clarecastle were rooted to the ground and the fear was permeating around the supporters that a rout was on the cards. Liddy and Darren Duggan hit minors before Ronan Goode fresh from County Cork hit Newmarket’s second goal. Duggan hit a second point as Clarecastle were now 13 points adrift. Surprisingly, Newmarket relaxed somewhat and Clarecastle stifled their opponents scoring potential and added two Derek Quinn frees to leave Newmarket comfortable (2-9) to (0-4) clear at the break. Both sides hit a number of wides in the opening half and Clarecastle had improved matters by redeploying Jonathan Clancy as a sweeper to cut out the supply to the inside forwards of Newmarket.
The opening three scores of the second half saw Derek Quinn (free), Colin Ryan (free and sideline cut) on target, all before the 36th minute. Newmarket were now 12 clear before Adam Healy decided enough was enough and that the battered pride of Clarecastle needed to be restored. He raced upfield and hit a wondergoal brimmed full of determination and in the intervening five minutes added a hat trick of points only for Colin Ryan to add two more points including Newmarket’s first score from play in 25 minutes.
Newmarket were (2-13) to (1-8) clear and alerted to a growing threat from Clarecastle began to utilise teamwork once again when selfishness had been dominant in their shooting for half an hour. Eoin Hayes and David Barrett ended the Clarecastle rally with two scores to restore a ten point advantage entering the final eight minutes.
Clarecastle were still trying but now the game was over as a contest as Newmarket added a hat trick of last minutes scores from Ryan (2) and Enda Kelly only for injury time consolation Clarecastle scores courtesy of Quinn and Sean Talty. Both sides will point to absentee’s but overall Newmarket on Fergus were the better side. Clarecastle, for their part worked hard after the opening 20 minutes and it would take little to improve them considerably as the willingness is there to fight for the cause.
The winners had solid dislays from Stephen Kelly, Alan Barrett, Enda Barrett who did well, David Barrett, Colin Ryan, Eoin Hayes and Enda Kelly. Clarecastle best efforts were between the 20th and 50th minutes led by Adam Healy, Derek Quinn, Sean Moloney, Jamie Coughlan, Pat Kelly in patches and Garrett Barry whose impending stag night ensured the early start in Newmarket.
NEWMARKET: Niall Woods, Eoin O Brien, Stephen Kelly, Sean O Connor, Alan Barrett, Enda Barrett, Niall O Connor, Noel Frawley, Eoin Hayes (0-2), Ronan Goode (1-0), David Barrett (0-3), Enda Kelly (0-1), James Liddy (1-1), Colin Ryan (0-10), Darren Duggan (0-2), Tommy Griffin for Duggan
CLARECASTLE: Jamie Coughlan, Sean Moloney, Mark McNamara, Kevin Clohessy, Jamie O Connor, Danny Scanlon, Patrick Kelly, Adam Healy (1-3), Garrett Barry, Derek Quinn (0-6), Ciaran O Dwyer, Jonathan Clancy, Sean Talty (0-1), David Greene, Eamonn Callinan. Subs: Ciaran Lynch for Greene, Andrew Page for O Connor, Fergal Griffin for Callinan
REFEREE: Ger Hoey (Clarecastle)

Good report yet again outsider.
Any sign of Liam Sheedy in the vicinity?
If he is as involved as people are saying they could be darkhorses this maybe?

newmarket are one of the 5 or 6 sides who can win the clare championship this year. they are prominent in the betting and with group they have will more than likely be in quarter finals. could not be classed as a surprise if they did win it. and im not a blues man just stating the obvious

Who do Newmarket have to come back into their team? James Mc, the Kilmartins? Devitt in goals, where is The Gaff these days?

True Newmarket were off the pace of the four big club teams of the mid-nineties ( as was the rest of the county - they were exceptional club sides ), but Newmarket were well to the fore during Clare's previous spell of achievement in the 70s.
It is to the credit of a lot of hard work put in along the way that The Blues have come back from being senior b / skirting with intermediate ( a period when nobody was bullsh!tting about winning anything ), to winning A trophies at underage and consistently reaching the latter stages of the championship.
Each of the three adult teams won trophies last year , all of which we'd swap for the big one, and while Newmarket won't be favourites for the championship this year one thing's for sure I wouldn't go writing them off just yet.
