We are all familiar with detailed video analysis of golfer's swing. Anyone know if video analysis being used much to improve hurlers' technique?

Heard the point being made on newstalk panel show last saturday that too much time being spent on drills of handpasses, short passing etc and not enough on the skills of long striking etc

If video analysis led to even a small increase in distance or an improved percentage of hooks avoided for some players on an intercounty team, it could make a big difference to a team.

I think video analysis could definitely be used at some levels. Often you see players trying to block a fella when they should be trying to hook him. This could be highlighted in video analysis but this is more of a problem at club level.

Very true. The amount of players that make a token effort at a block when clearly too far away to execute it is remarkable when a decent hook is clearly available from a couple of metres behind a striker if you have the technique.Should be part of every session.

I think players are hitting the ball too far nowadays!!

It is hard to develop a young players swing correctly. too many bad habits picked up at home and school

You guys have brought up an excellent point. The more matches I watch the more I see this and other stupid errors over and over and every county seems to be equelly guilty of it.Here is another pet peeve of mine.Lad catches the ball around the middle of the field and takes off on a mad dash with obviously no good plan in his head finally runs in to traffic and is either dispossed or offloads to a teammate right next to himself who now attracts the swarming defence and loses the ball or a ruck develops.Watch it this Summer lads it is going to happen time and time again every Sunday

My own one that I "hate" is a lad winning possession and immediately tapping the ball from hurl to hand (with no one near him) and having taken no steps, 2nd catch gone immediately and under pressure on his strike for no good reason.

Young lads are doing it an awful lot and incorporating a completely unnecessary slow shimmy-they think it looks good.

As far as I can see it only leads to
1) Catching it 3 times because you are underpressure
2) Striking the ball away aimlessly with head down because you are striking off the hurl
3) Losing possession as you try to strike off the hurl.

I think video analysis would actually work best with 12-16 year olds.

And ball possesion.I can see this being important if your team is ahead and is close to the end of the match but otherewise it just seems pointless.Put the damn ball in play all the other times and if your team is good enough they will win enough ball over the 70 plus minuets otherwise they will not and lose which is as it should be.What we have developing now more and more is ball control and as a result fans watching in the stands or on tv are being bored to death.People can say what they want about Kerry football but by Christ boring was never one of their traits and that I always admired them for.

This is a really interesting thread.
I would think that any intercounty (top tier) hurler wouldnt have any problem driving the ball in optimum conditions. Where I think video analysis could be of benefit is preventing blocks and hooks. How often have you seen a player wind up to kill a ball over the bar from short range where a shortened grip "tap" would do.
I've watched Henry sheflin puck around before matches and it's very interesting to watch how he does it as compared to his peers. He varies his striking running through his full reportoire, the thinking mans hurler.
Shame he doesn't wear the blue and gold
