Anyone know of any other artists who do paintings of hurling scenes?

It's a lovely painting but with a price tag of 1700 euro or thereabouts I think I'll leave it to others to buy! BTW I'd imagine any artist will do a painting of a hurling scene if you bring a photo of a particular scene to them.

they are very dark and moody
Whereas hurling games are always very colourful due to the jersies worn and the summer sun.

nice pictures but I think this topic highlights the interest us hurlers have in the representation of hurling. Also, as a regular visitor of the National Gallery in Dublin, I have noticed the complete absence of ANY represntation of our national games. I have also left the comment with them - to be ignored probably. Maybe a few more interested people might provoke a response if they too complained of same.

I have enquired too at many galleries and with artists around the country. It certainly is odd that there seems to be a complete lack of hurling or Gaelic football influenced art and 100's of artists painting horse racing! Maybe it's just a reflection of the market and the deeper pockets of some of the racing public.

Maybe it's because horses are beautiful creatures and make for a good painting, whereas hurlers ...

Thomas Ryan PPRHA (b.1929)
All Ireland Hurling Final 1963, Waterford-V-Kilkenny
Oil on canvas, 60 x 70cms
Signed and dated 1963 and inscribed verso
Provenance: From a Private Dublin Collection
In September 1963, Kilkenny took on Waterford in that year's All Ireland Hurling Final in Croke Park in Dublin. The present painting captures a moment during play, looking from a corner position high in the terraces across the vast expanse of the pitch, which is bathed in sunlight.
The artist, and by extension the viewer, is very much part of the crowd and treats his position in a similar manner to Jack B.Yeats with the heads of fellow spectators surrounding the viewer, drawing you into the action and the excitement just as Yeats did in his iconic 'Liffey Swim'.
As it happened, Kilkenny won the match scoring 4 goals and 17 points to
Waterford's 6-8. Co-incidentally, forty five years later, the same two counties fought out the 2008 final only for Kilkenny to emerge as victors, yet again.
Sold at Adams Sale Rooms in Dublin for €12000

Wow that was a lot of money for this painting. Interesting technique and hairdo being sported by Mick Mackey in this one...
