21 teams, isn't that an unusual number?

I don't know about Gantley but Kavanagh was invited into the Development squad and refused.

The team promoted from Intermediate get a by to the group stages, so it guarantees them 2 years in Senior with no relegation in first year. Helps freshen things up!

And damn right he was too. Gort Larkins , Craughwell Portumna , Sarsfields Turloughmore , St. Thomas's TAD are my predictions. Relegation : Ardrahan.

Both lost their first round matches. The winner of the match between them goes into the group stages. the loser goes into the relegation play offs.

That's a shame about Kavangh, thought Jim Byrne could have persuaded him. Gantley, well he's a trier and him and the lads from Beagh have a tough group. They should be confident after defeating the'Bridge. Loughrea's group looks quite hard, probably the hardest. Greg Kennedy as coach will be doing his level best to defeat the 'Town. Gort have it handy, should top their group, they looked good in the 1st half I saw of them against Thomas's. Richie Cummins looked fit as a fiddle after his horrendous injury. The long term replacment of Damien Hayes for future Galway teams.
Speaking of horrendous injuries, Kavangh last year was coming back from injury,of the cruciate variety, so he should naturally be better.

Group A looks straight forward enough, and it must give Moycullen some encouragement as they should give Pearses nad Tommys a good rattle at least!
Group B should be tight enough with Portumna and any one of the other three coming through. (That’s assuming Portumna overcome Ardrahan).
Group C is a very competitive group, but I’d fancy Turlough and Beagh
Group D is again very competitive but Loughrea are dogged enough to come through and I’ll stick my neck out and say (albeit reservedly) TAD might also spring a surprise and come through.
In the relegation, Mellows have to be very careful as if they don’t find some momentum from somewhere they could find themselves in Intermediate.

saw moycullen play a challenge match in the last few weeks and they look poor so I would tip them to not beat any of the teams in that group. Pearses will be full of confidence after their win but gort and tommy larkins would be favourites? this is by far the handiest group and gort should have an easy road out of it.
Group D looks tough and if Thomas' are going to deliver on their promise they wont have it easy against loughrea, athenry or TAD.
The relegation group looks to be as tough as any of the other groups with clarinbridge and mellowes. Maybe it needs a few high profile teams to go down there to make the county board look a bit closer at ways to tweak / improve the system for next year.

Bit nuts in fairness, your year over in May, seems like a rubbish system in my opinion.

Well technically they still have to avoid relegation so their season is far from over.
In the old system there were a lot of meaningless games. Can't say that anymore. If you don't perform early on you are gone. You can't afford to skate by just doing the bare minimum to get through. Hard to blame anyone except themselves.

What he said -
The Bridge have to pay some attaention to the relegation group. Its not by anymeans a foregone conclusion with Mellows and Ardrahan in the mix although Kiltormer will be most people favourites for the drop.
The system is far better with interest being peaked earlier in the county championship. Some very tasty games to come in the group stages - Group C being one to watch in particular

Did Ardrahan and Portumna play? I thought it was called off?

There were some suggestions of rewarding the relegation playoff "winners" by allocating them a place in the group stages proper but I can't see how they could fit that into the schedule if most games are being played in parallel. Also it would mean a third bite of the cherry for teams who lost their first 2 games which somewhat goes against the theory of every game being meaningful and do or die in nature.

Portumna beat Ardrahan yesterday evening 3-12 to 0-6, so that puts them through to the group stages whilst Ardrahan are facing into the relegation group.
