Nearly half 5 now and no topic on this, despite the dislike of the indo on here surely ye all bought it today. Haven't studied it yet and I realise it's a very difficult task but some of the decisions are bizarre. Mick O'Connell is left off the Kerry team Supposedly to fit Dara O'Se but on other teams guys are out of position all over the place. The Tipp team is almost entirely 1960's with only Cummins and Kelly from the present day. Sean Og is on the Cork team as is Joe Deane, wo very fine players but best of the last 50 years. Anyway I'm in a rush now but i was looking to get the discussion going, maybe each selection deserves a thread of its own.
There are a good few strange calls if form after 1962 is the benchmark.

I thought the inclusion of Curran would raise more eyebrows myself. Was there not a better centre back for Cork back the years?

Tipp team is fair enough actually if you listen to what people say about that 60's team. Maybe Tommy Dunne at midfield would be an addition i would make on players i have seen play.

I am also surprised at Ronan Curran. I would go with Jim Cashman. Otherwise, the backs seem right to me although Wayne Sherlock would run Corcoran close as a corner back. Corcoran also, of course, starred in the forwards.

In the forwards, Tim Crowley has to be centre forward. I would put JBM at no. 10 and leave out Tony O'Sullivan. Also, you cannot leave out Gerald McCarthy, up there as one of Cork's best ever hurlers. I would put him at 12 and move Ben O'Connor to 13. This leaves out Charlie Mac Carthy but needs must. Joe Deane probably deserves to be in but only just when you consider the merits of Seanie Leary or John Fitzgibbon, two of the great goal scorers.

Corcoran should be at Centre back, Sherlock in the corner, Jim Cash and Curran both unlucky to miss out. Gerald Mc for JBM, again unlucky. Ben in the Corner instead of Deane, maybe that leaves room for JBM at 10 or 12.

Meath: No Mick Lyons
Kerry: No Mick O'Connell

Cork: Ronan Curran & Joe Deane??? No Justin, Gerald or Jim Cashman
Galway: No Brendan Lynskey
Dublin: Tomás Brady???
Kilkenny: No Richie Power Snr
Tipp: Maybe place for Tommy Dunne but not at the expense of the 2 midfielders named. Padraic Maher could be on that team in ten years.

Clare, Waterford, Limerick, Wexford, Offaly, Laois, Antrim all fair accurate as far as my knowledge goes.

Sure Sherlock could not start ahead of Pat Mulcahy & Brian Murphy for years

I actually thought you knew your hurling, I'm surprised at you.
That was a travesty and it wasn't years.

On the Kilkenny team, I'd swap Ollie Walsh for Noel, Noel Hickey for Brian Cody, Chunky for Joe Hennessy in midfield, and Billy Fitz for Liam Fennelly. Frightening leaving out Mick Kavanagh, Mick Fennelly, Richie Power, John Power and many others.

The Kilkenny half forward is some line. DJ, Henry and Eddie Keher. Now that would be terrifying for any half back line.

The Kilkenny team chosen by the indo was:
Noel Skehan
Fan Larkin Brian Cody Jackie Tyrell
Tommy Walsh Ger Henderson JJ Delaney
Frank Cummins Joe Hennessy
DJ Carey Henry Shefflin Eddie Keher
Eddie Brennan Kieran Purcell Liam Fennelly

Good to see the Village as the most represented team.

Would not Keher and Carey be better known as predators from the fullforward line, and Keher a better hurler than Pat Delaney,I don't think so,a good freetaker,I'll give him that.

Cork football- Billy Morgan a bit before my time but he must have been some player to keep Kerins off. No way Jimmy Kerrigan gets in my team at half back, Anthony Lynch for me, Declan Barron at 15?

Agree except for goal keeper. Skehan was more consistent.

Dead right. Cork treated Sherlock badly and suffered for it, especially in 2005.

Again Barron was before my time, I would say Joe Kavanagh should be in? Did Barron ever play in the corner, thought he was an out and out 11.

Some of the teams are a bit screwy alright as they only pick from the last 50 years. For instance the late great Sean Purcell didn't get on the Galway football team as he was at the very end of his career when the eligible period began in 1962. I'm sure there are plenty more examples like that elsewhere.

Some interesting bits.
Jimmy Barry Murphy and Ray Cummins were on both football and hurling teams.
Larry Tompkins was on the Kildare and Cork teams

Martin Carney on both Donegal and Mayo teams

No Canty or Anthony Lynch on the Cork team surprises perhaps?

Worse still no Colin Corkery

Dara O'Se got in ahead of Mick O'Connell
Decaln O'Sullivan wasnt on the Kerry team

John O'Leary was named as Dublin goalie ahead of CLuxton and Cullen. Both Brogan brothers were named as was Ciaran Whelan

Is Frank Lohan missing out on the Clare team a surprise

Tomas McGrane,Tomas Brady,Liam Rushe and Keaney on the Dublin team

Is Kevin Broderick missing out on the Galway team a surprise?Joe Canning is on it as is Ollie Canning

One of the noticable things about the selections is the influence of the back door. The weaker football counties are getting big representation from players in the last 10 years which is deserved as in the past they may have had great players but unfortunately not many would have got to see them play so cant be judged them as well

Charlie mc was a very relaible freetaker but no way was he as good as deane or Ben. I saw Gerald in the seventies. He played well in 1977 against wexford (mom). However he wasnt great in any other games in my recollection. Seanie, Martin Doherty, Pat Moylan,JBM, Dermot Mc and Brian Murphy were the standout players of the seventies.O and of course TIm Crowley I cant talk about sixties. They may have been good then

There are a lot of guys who would have been past it by 62 as far as i can see
