The Thang Long Astroturf ground in My Dinh recently played host to a very successful third competition for the All Vietnam Schools Cup.
It was organised by members of the Viet Celts Gaelic Football Club in conjunction with Education in Ireland, an organisation which promotes Irish universities and educational institutions.
Report - All Vietnam Schools Cup 2012
Junior Boys Cup
Hanoi International School 8.8 (32pts)
VAS Hanoi 2.5 (11pts)
VAS were defending champions in the junior boys competition. However they simply had no answer to Hanoi International School (HIS) as a sluggish VAS Juniors were annihilated by the team they had beaten in the Hanoi Schools Cup final in March. HIS produced what was probably the finest display of attacking schools Gaelic Football seen on the fields of Vietnam to date. The display was a credit to their coaches, Colm Ross and Brandon Gauthier and in particular Head Coach, Mr. Michael Clifford. Best for HIS was Daniel Papendiek from Germany. On a difficult day for VAS Juniors, their best player was Nguyen Trung Hieu
Girls Cup
Hanoi International School 5.5 (20pts)
VAS Hanoi 2.3 (9pts)
This was the first year of the All Vietnam Schoolgirls’ Cup and was also an historic occasion in that it was that first time two different schools played each other in a competitive schoolgirls’ Gaelic Football match in Vietnam. It was played between Hanoi International School (HIS) and VAS Hanoi. HIS won it in fine style but VAS put up a brave fight and had they had a better start might well have pushed their more experienced opponents, HIS a lot closer. Well done to Head Coach, Mr. Michael Clifford of HIS Girls and also Ms Orlaith Curran who did a great job, preparing and coaching the VAS Hanoi Girls. Best for HIS was Monika Tran. Best for VAS was Vi Ha My.
Senior Boys Cup
Hanoi Academy 2.4 (10pts)
VAS Hanoi 1.5 (8pts)
VAS were going for the three in a row in the senior boys competition but alas the dream was not to be as their three year dominance of the senior cup came to an abrupt end. It was a tense and exciting game, the result was in the balance until the very end. However celebrations erupted back in West Central Hanoi with the news that Hanoi Academy had denied their old rivals VAS Hanoi, the three in a row. Hanoi Academy have been great supporters of this tournament since its inception and no one in Vietnam would begrudge them their victory. Congratulations to their coaching staff of Seamus Doran and Dave Cunningham. Best for Hanoi Academy was Hoang Dang Quang. Best for VAS was Nguyen Tung Anh. With their dominance broken, the tide turns for VAS but the tournament grows
Acknowledgements
Thanks to the Irish Ambassador, Damien Cole who came down to present medals. His easy going manner and his ability to share a laugh with the students was much appreciated by everyone.
Official Tournament Photographer, Len Elliot took a lot of fine photos as usual.
Claire Coughlan was a very competent referee of the schoolgirls’ game.
Thanks especially to Asian Youth Development Coach, Orlaith Curran from Dublin City University who took a lot training sessions in the various schools during the week and coached the VAS Girls on the day and thanks to both her and Seamus Doran for completing the refereeing panel.
A special mention must go to Lana Le and Le Ngoc Bich who helped out with a lot of the logistics for the tournament. We must also show our appreciation for the Education in Ireland sponsorship and funding received through Enterprise Ireland and pass on our thanks to them.
