Firstly I have to say,I use to love this site. I would log on several times a day to get all the gaa news from well informed articulate posters. You had variety of topics, good banter but the gaa was always to the core of the site.
Unfortunately over the last year or so the site has been taken over by a few lads who do nothing but slag one another off like children and ruin threads. The site has also been taken over by soccer threads. I know lads will say, start other topics if you want. But the problrm with that is that they are usually ruined by the same soccer individuals.
It is obvious that some of the better posters have left or do not bother to post as much because the standards have dropped, all because of these few posters who everyone knows. AFR you may still be getting as many hits but unfortunately a lot of them are from the above mentioned posters posting sterile stuff. It is sad to see such a great slowly site die. 10 / 12 soccer threads going at the moment, mainly just to slag one another off..tiresome. No wonder the better posters dont bother anymore and are disappearing. Sad Sad Sad.

A few here slag off thefreekick but topics/threads over there are much easier to follow/avoid and the GAA threads are usually well debated. Without having a go, I think the format here is largely to blame and could learn a bit from there. But posters are equally to blame for not pulling fellas up for constantly starting new threads and not directing them to say a general epl, or champions league thread and to quit their spamming.

I think An Fear Rua could be sued for false advertising for his tag line at the top of the page "The GAA Unplugged"

Im a big football man (soccer to some) as well as a gaa man (mainly gaa football rather than hurling) but very rarely post on the football threads here. There are far better sites for football debate, chat, information etc, from ybig to foot.ie etc. I dont mind the football/soccer threads here but I very rarely go near then. Generally I come here for the gaa info.

I wouldnt advocate the banning of football threads as was recently proposed as I think that is ludricious. Also the above football sites have their dedicated gaa related threads with no problem so cant see why the opposite doesnt happen here. I think thats the key though, just have dedicated threads to certain topics. That should keep all happy.

I also think its the time of year as well - bit of a lull in the gaa season at the moment. once the championships are well up and running there will be much more to chat about gaa wise.

How about contributing to some of the GAA topics instead of whining about the soccer ones.
It is easy to use the topic filter too.
No pleasing some people...

Does AFR pay you to come to his defence. The only tim eyou seem to ever post on here is when someone decides to criticise the content on this site.

i agree with u totally fairhill.. i also think the site admin is way too picky as to what comes under offensive threads, insulting posts etc. I have been banned on a number of occasions and for most of those, it took me by complete surprise because most of the things i posted wouldn't insult a schoolchild

I wouldn't say it's the death of AFR at all. BUT the ramblings and arguing by the same few lads is tiring. I love both GAA and soccer. It's easier though for me to post on non gaa topics because my cable operator doesn't carry a channel that shows our great games and I've tried the overplay but it just isnt the same. So I enjoy coming on here and reading the gaa threads, annoying alright when like this morning we had a l@nger load of premiership topics.

And not many on here would classify the football threads on here as informative. Just thr same old fellows slanging one another off. Even if you wanted to post on afootball topic, why bother, you know its going to end in farce. Some of us have grown up.

It's not even the soccer threads. They attack you for posting something interesting!

This site will be in existence for eleven years in September of this year. In everyone of those years there have been people saying ... AFR is dead... or dying... all the good posters have left... premierview/hogan stand/the free kick/uncle tom cobbley.com is a better site... the moderation is too harsh... the moderation is too lenient... there are too many soccer topics... the WUMMERs have taken over... the site layout is crap... I used to love this site but not anymore since X, Y OR Z happened... it's just the same few people who are posting under different names...

Often, it does not take too much to suss that these 'helpful' and 'concerned' comments usually come from people who have previously been banned for breaking the forum rules.

All or some of the above may or may not be true. We'll let others be the judge of that. However, the statistics for visits to AFR do not bear out these dire warnings. Traffic to the site is busier than it ever has been in all of those eleven years. That has to be some indication of it's enduring relevance and popularity. Each month, approximately 50,000 individuals visit the site. Their visits total 250,000. And 1,400,000 pages are downloaded. Next month, we'll go with a mobile version which will push those numbers even higher.

On social media, the site is followed by almost 4,400 people on Twitter and 5,300 on Facebook.

Those are hardly the statistics of a slow death.

There is no other that comes anywhere near AFR!

You run a tight ship, I'll testify to that as someone who has sailed a bit close to the wind now and again.

Your point about the recently banned coming back and whinging is valid.

There is a solid cadre of posters here who are the salt of the earth. Because they don't always see eye to eye with each other makes for lively debate.

An Fear Rua ...the original and the best.

Bossman, you should be congratulated for creating this site and its success. The amount of cr@p you have to put up with, no one would do it.
However and with total respect a couple of points. Of course your numbers are increasing, more and more people are using the internet. But on this site at the moment it is the same few who are clocking up the numbers for you and unfortunately tu these few are turning others away from the site. You will lose the genuine gaa supporter to these wum merchants and you will be left with them...till they move on.This is just my opinion, a big fan of this site. Again I am being honest and mean no disrespect to you AFR.

Of all the registered users how many are actually using the site? It would seem to me that at any one time you have the same few people registered under different names until such time as they get banned and then the process starts all over again. I have been using this site for around 2 months now and have been called about 5 different people so it's obvious that people just re-register as soon as they get banned. I guess not living in Ireland helps me from getting involved in heated arguments over local issues so less chance of me saying the wrong thing and getting the road..... Hopefully

Fantastic to hear there is a mobile version on the way.
Now that I have made the leap from reading to posting I see this as a huge addition and can't wait.

For those of you not happy with the site......spread your wings, the www has a couple of other places for you to bore the head off people so cheerio and dont let the door hit you on the way out.
