And neither Defoe, Welbeck or Carroll are exactly prolific goalscorers either!

Downing in is a bit of a puzzler imo. Why?

With exception of Rooney we have better options! I'm not a big fan of Rio but surely experience alone..obvious the Captain was Roys favourite.

I would think Woy is looking at Walcott to cover 2 positions, winger and striker. Imo his best position is up front playing off another striker.

The decision not to pick Micah Richards or Phil Jagielka are strange ones imo.
Downing very lucky to be picked ahead of Johnson or Lennon.

They are 6/4 to get out of the group, i think they will struggle.

Cant understand why Gareth Barry is considered good enough. If Adam Johnson was at any other clubv, he'd be there before either of the Arsenal 2 or Stewart Downing. Defensively they'll do all right, esp with Hart in goal.
Wouldnt have brought Welbeck or Defoe either. Grant Holt deserved to be there before either of those 2. And Crouch, not even in reserve?

The knives will be out here tomorrow.

Think because he has been playing all along, done ok for England, Milner rubbish, Adam Johnson better than both but never gets a game either, as for Micah Richards, you pick holes in the entire team with exception of Rooney, Hart, Cole, maybe Glen Johnson, rest all have question marks.

That's an extraordinary squad in many ways. If Parker isn't fit, Henderson will be his replacement. You will then have Johnson, Henderson, Downing & Carroll all included. Last August I said on here that none of those players would get anywhere near the Spurs team and nothing has happened in the last 9 months to change my views on that.

Milner is another one I don't really rate. England could be running out with Gerrard, Lampard & Barry together again and surely they must know how that usually works out.

Finally, I see the Birmingham sub goalie is now England's 4th choice. Ok, he's young and may have a lot of potential but if Birmingham don't think he's ready for them yet, how can he be England's 4th choice? Meanwhile Birmingham's regular keeper, Colin Doyle, may not even be 4th choice for Ireland!

I'm with you on Barry, woefully exposed in the world cup v Germany and constantly seems to give the ball away for city, but he has a prem winners medaland a hundred grand a week so obviously i am missing something!

In the past Ive looked at England squads before major competitions and feared they just might go on to win something. However this squad poses no such fears and they will struggle to get out of their group.
Several of the players would struggle to get into Irelands squad.

Que the now bi-annual inquest when they are on the plane home as to what is wrong and why they cant produce world class players etc.

Although it's the worst England squad I can remember. That doesn't necessarily mean they won't go far. They have a good keeper, with Rooney up front. They'll be fairly solid at the back. Midfield is their big weakness.

Rooney misses two of what might be only three games.

Adrian Durmham should be fun on TalkSport this afternoon now that Michael Carrick is left out. He regards Carrick as one of the best midfielders in the world. Regulars on here know De Jong holds that title.

Solid at back, while Right/Left back ok, I considered Rio the best of the centre halves and he has been average at best this season. John Terry, Jones, Lescott, Cahill...in past always ok here.

Yep first man on Dutch team also, forget your Van Persies, although am surprised at Carricks omission also, given the competion.

Nope, missed him, you are correct, good player well worth his place, think Coles recent performances will have him to the fore. You know its a strange squad, but no matter who you put in not going to make it much better.

Is Cole not a left back? If both fully fit, Cole the better footballer imo.

Fair point. Still enough talent there to have a decent tournament but likes of Rooney, Lampard Gerrard, Barry, Terry need to step up to the mark this time.

Rooney especially was absolutely brutal in South Africa. He may not be the footballing wizard that the UK media like to portray him as but he's a decent player that does have the ability to kick a ball in the required direction, an ability which seemingly deserted him at last two tournaments he's played at.

Hes suspended for the first two games, by which time they could be very well out before he kicks a ball.
