The Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton has confirmed that birth certs will soon have to include the identity of the father.
Minister Burton says she plans to implement the recommendation of the Law Reform Commission in relation to civil registration and to start that process by the end of the year.
It is hoped compulsory joint registration of birth will facilitate requiring a father to take responsibility for the maintenance of the child and related rights in respect of guardianship

Would one hold that view if it was one's sister or daughter?

In some parts of Dublin's Northside the women will find it hard to remember who the father was.

Father Unknown!
What are they going to do, DNA fingerprint every male in the country? They can't even get us to register our property tax not to mind probable children tax.

Glad to see this law being introduced. As regards the rape/incest issue that shouldnt be an obstacle. I expect in a case like that it would be up to the mother to identify who the father was and I dont see any way that the woman can be compelled to give the real name. She could always claim it was a one night stand and didnt get the name. At any rate in modern Ireland how many women would carry a baby that was the result of rape/incest to full term?

Fair play to you hitch, I'm glad to see that you don't have an inferiority complex about your rustic roots. What county are you BTW?

This is a good thing.
God only knows how many men (who don't know who their father is) are in relationships with women (who don't know who their father is) and it's the same father.

How is it a money spinner?
Surely this a good thing, to tackle dead beat dad's who want the state to pay for their kids up bringing.

because the majority of fathers that have children in these circumstances already cotribute to there childs upbringing through financial means, and the mother has no problem putting there names on the birth cert as things stand.... this is a step towards regulating these payments between the parents and probably putting a tax on them.. not all single mothers get knocked up by deadbaeats, and if they are the child is prob better off not knowing him...
i am prob being cynical here as im sure theres lots of ppl who spend a lot of money in later life trying to find they're father but at the end of the day i think it should be the mothers choice..

But if it is the mother's choice, why should the state be supporting them. Can't have it both ways. Not having a go a single mothers, but dead beat dads. They should be supporting their families.

Disagree entirely - everyone has the right to know who they are and where they come from, to know who both their parents are.
