Cody attempted to influence referees, claims Regan

By John Fogarty

Friday, May 18, 2012

Hurling pundit Daithí Regan claims Brian Cody attempted to influence referees with his pre-Division 1 final comments earlier this month.

The Newstalk and TV3 analyst also said Cork will need to lose an All-Ireland final to realise the intensity required to win one. He also believes starlet Conor Lehane will face a stronger brand of physicality from Kilkenny, should the teams face one another in the championship.

Earlier this month, Cody said the GAA were making attempts to take "genuine physicality out of hurling". But Offaly’s 1994 All-Ireland winner feels, while not dirty, they are getting away with playing illegally at times.

"I think that Brian Cody by coming out with statements like that is influencing referees to keep doing what they’re doing in a subtle kind of way, no more so than Alex Ferguson (he) is a very strong character.

"Human nature being what it is, the stronger the team you are, the stronger the character you are and more successful you are as a manager, more will be thought of what you say as opposed to the Carlow manager making the same statement.

"From his point of view, it was the right thing to do. He wants to see it continued to be refereed and what he was saying was you can expect the same physicality from Kilkenny this year."

Regan outlined one of the covert ploys he believes Kilkenny perform in getting the better of teams. "Simple things like a little tug on the arm to slow a guy down and a second attacker or defender comes in.

"It’s not dirty but it’s illegal, it’s bordering on illegal, and referees are letting it go because we’ve all lauded the last three All-Ireland finals, which have been outstanding.

"The way hurling is being refereed at the moment suits the way Kilkenny play hurling."

Regan believes Kilkenny’s physical hurling stems from the mid-’00s when they discovered a way of taking on Cork’s running style.

"I think they’ve maintained it. The only team that have stepped up to that physicality have been Tipp. I don’t think anyone else has met it which is why I don’t see anybody else. Particularly Cork.

"I think Cork will have to suffer an All-Ireland defeat at that intensity before they realise winning an All-Ireland final."

Regan was impressed with how Lehane handled the close attention of Kilkenny defenders in his two outings against Kilkenny this year. But he warned: "If he comes up against them again he can expect it."

Regan also fears Lar Corbett is taking a risk returning to the Tipperary panel. "It’s been well recognised that he got a bit of abuse in Tipp last year after not hurling well. It’s a fickle industry, it’s a fickle business and he’s the type of player that’s unique and he’s an easy target if it doesn’t go well."

What a surprise that this garbage is once again printed in The Examiner. They may be in the minority but there are far too many whingers in Cork. What do they think they are doing if not trying to influence the referees also? They have even had some success at this given how difficult Kilkenny have found it to be awarded a free at times over the past couple of years.

I do think this is all counter-productive however. The longer people continue to spout this rubbish, the more motivated Kilkenny will be to continue to win for as long as possible.

Regan is noted for his "Anti Cat" stance on everything. The man always had a problem with Kilkenny (not just Cody). HE uses Kilkenny to get himself air/print time.

Larkin: Physicality is part of hurling

By John Fogarty

Thursday, May 17, 2012

Kilkenny captain Eoin Larkin believes there are outside forces intent on taking the physicality out of hurling.

Two weeks after Brian Cody said hurling referees were coming under too much pressure, the 2008 Hurler of the Year is concerned there are moves afoot to soften the game by people with little attachment to and understanding of it.

"Physicality is part and parcel of it. I don’t think there is any player will tell you they don’t want to be hit in a match.

"No one, after getting a shoulder, gets off the ground and starts crying."

Prior to the Division 1 final against Cork, Cody said referees were being "straitjacketed" and there was no dirt in the game.

"I do think there is a lot of pressure put on referees," said Larkin. "People expect to see games flowing but that is not always possible.

"Referees should be let make their own decision based on common sense rather than the decision the lad up in the stand wants you to make."

Put to him that the expression is not in the rule book, Larkin replied: "It’s not in the rule book but if you wanted it black and white there’d be a free every five seconds in a hurling game.

"I’m not going to make any decisions on it, the referees and GAA will do that. We’ll just get on with it."

let it go little man, you made a completely stupic ill informed comment and in trying to justify it you made another stupid ill informed comment, which was an indication of your undoubted anger, you shouldnt get angry on the internet kid, stick with the hurling, you seem unable to grasp this internet lark.
Cork have the small matter of tipp and then either clare or waterford to worry about before the powder -------ers

Grammar.....
Spelling....

And I'm stupid. ABFF appears on every thread slagging KK. Hardly a shock for him to start this thread.

Hockey might be a better game for Cork.

As for Daithi, played against him both club and county from the age of 13 up. A great hurler but you'd be black and blue after playing him.

And now the powder pi$$er comments come out.

Is that the best you can resort to?

And have you written off Limerick?
