There is a common belief in Ireland that the RTE main soccer pundits are better than their UK counterparts, people say 'they tell it as it is', they adapt a 'no-nonsence approach' and are seen as 'refreshing' for their thoughts and views on the beautiful game. In my view the RTE pundits are well past their peak of say 10 years ago, for the past few years Herlihy frequently asks questions that set the trio off on some bizarre tangent totally unrelated to the game in question. Dunphy is retained purely for sensationalism, his views and predictions are usually incorrect, Herlihy & Giles should retire and enjoy their RTE pensions, Brady I would retain. Also, I can't see the Trevor Steven thing and RTE? Plenty more Brits out their who are far better e.g Graham Taylor.

Giles compares everything to when he was playing in the 60s, and it's old hat at this stage. Football has moved on in every way. Time for change I think.
I do enjoy listening to Graham Taylor on Newstalk. He is articulate. I think Cascarino would be good to get in too, always good for a one liner..........

The UK lads are awful most of them are two friendly with the players and show complete bias towards the English lads. Souness is the best of the Sky crew. The Irish lads at least will give an honest opinion regardless of whether it is right or wrong. The Sky lads especially say what they are told to say.

I see RTE are supplementing their fantastic punditry team with the fantastic Richard 'richie' Sadlier.

a interesting night was the coverage of the recent manchester derby.
on the much derided (often correctly) bbc they noted that the main story was the fantastic performance of ya ya toure.
on rte panel ( which had gilesy and one of the young lads ) naturally no mention of ya ya, just 24/7 of their usual 'unira' obsession.
if roy keane had given ya ya's display they would have raved and raved!

Balderdash.
Saldlier has been the chief anti Trapp campaigner from the beginnining.
He favours this Ireland team playing a more open, expansive game.
He had been proved wrong and is a fraud, a charlatan, a spoofer.
Worst of all he outed himself as a drug cheat to increase his profile.

I beg leave to differ, sir. I thought their ( along with Liam Brady ) analysis of where Chelsea go from here at the end of last night's game was good stuff.

I don't have a problem with Brady,Dunphy or Giles but lord that Bill lad can be one annoying -------- at times.
At least the three amigos know their stuff about the beautiful game but Bill ?. Let's just say that I wouldn't want him on my Pub Quiz team for his knowledge of Association Football.

Kenny Cunningham and Richie Sadlier are perceptive analysts and Sadlier especially articulate, but he also needs to lighten up a bit and not always be so earnest.
I think Trevor Steven is currently the most well-rounded of RTE's analysts/co-commentators, with Ronnie Whelan being far and away the worst

how many times will do we hear cunningham say "at this moment in time " ?
he surely has many more words in his vocabulary i just wish he would use some of them every now and then just for effect if nothing else
the only problem i would have with the three amigos is that i believe that they should have their own show and not have to answer bills inane ceists

Graeme Souness definitely the best I've seen. Gary Neville has been very good this season

nobody even mentioning ray houghton? has to be the worst co-commentator for a long while. he is so negative about all the players, never seems to give any player credit for anything. i think he is terrible.
on another note, it is good to hear george hamilton back in the commentator seat, especially now that we are in the euro championships, a legend of irish soccer commentary

He's probably saying it even now, as I type.
But I had to laugh at Gilesy using his old chestnut 'get the breaks in the box' on Saturday; he famously over-used this phrase during the mid-70s live coverage of a Leeds Euro Final that he missed through injury
It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that he said it at least 50 times!!!

That's what is good about Bill.
The opposite of bill is Matt Cooper. Constantly interrupting the pundits, with a giddy comment "But isn't it correct to say ...".
Shut the ---- up, I want to hear what Peter Canavan has to say.

All true. Bit of a joke at this stage. They've bought into the whole "more edgy and no-nonsense than UK pundits" to the point that they say things just for the sake of it.
They don't really know much about any of the modern players except for those playing with Man Utd.
The whole RTE approach to football needs a full scale revamp.

I thought it was 75, cer
(but I haven't googled)
Johnny was definitely doing a co-commentary; at least I don't think he could have fitted in 50+ 'different class' comments in the half-time break, anyways!
Tomaszewski was a 'clown'; at least, Brian Clough said so!
