Shane Ryan's retirement hasnt really grabbed many headlines. He was a great servant of the Dublin footballers but after winning an all star at midfield, he fell out of favour with Pat Gilroy. There were a good few players that played with dublin that were great servants but didnt win an all ireland. Ciaran Whelan, Paddy Christie and Shane Ryan spring to mind.

His return to hurling probably came a bit too late but he did make some impact. He got the insurance point against Limerick in the all ireland quarter final last year and got a great point v Tipp in the semi fina. He came on as a sub in both games. He started his inter county career with the hurlers and finished it there. I wonder how good was he at the hurling when he started out???

A player who defintely made the most of his ability. He was outstanding in 08.He and Cluxton had a telepathic relationship that year his ability to get into space for Cluxtons kickouts and win the ball was incredible.A player who deserved an all ireland after all the years he put in as a Dublin footballer

I believe he filled every jersey from number two to twelve at some stage for the dublin footballers. very versatile. Gilroy was ruthless enough when it came to cutting some of the older brigade from the team like Whelan, Sherlock and Ryan. This is not a criticism by the way.

All star was a reward for years ploughing away rather than an outstanding year at the time. In hurling terms he rooted away...

Honest as the day is long though and best of luck to him.

he was a great servant in football, can't say he played much hurling for Dublin a odd game here and there.
