Anybody read his article in today's Sindo? Never mind the fact that he has admitted before to not knowing much about rugby, but was there any need for the snide remarks about Mayo, Waterford and Limerick. Terrible, terrible, terrible article.

Given that his own County, Sligo, have taken regular beatings form Mayo over the years, they would surely have been a more suitable example.

Also, exactly how can he label Leinster "The Greatest" with such conviction when they still remain behind Toulouse in the roll of honour?...To think this guy gets paid to write that shít.

The 4 Toulouse victories were more spread out and so different players where Leinsters success is more or less with the same team so i think its fair to describe them as the greatest team if not the most successful club obviously.

His analogy with the all ireland finals is lazy and there to stir sh1t , poor effort from someone writing for a national paper

I have no issue with him acclaiming Leinster's greatness-this is as good a team as has ever played in the HC although I think Toulouse have been the best team over the competition's history but 3 in 4 years is some achievement and I can see them doing 4 in 5 next year in Lansdowne Road. My issue is with the quality of the article, stuff about the All Blacks and those snide remarks. Sweeney is good at writing articles on Irish boxing and Athletics and is always trumpeting the underdog so to say what he did here is a bit hypocritical.

Fairly unnecessary comment .I am sure he wouldnt be best pleased if someone passed that kind of sneery remark about Sligo Rovers.

Why do some sports writers when writing about one sport have to make comparisions between it an another sport.

Sweeney was a hurling All Star. Had he not a distinguished playing career with Sligo Seniors? No wonder he is such an expert. He won an All Ireland Senior club hurling medal with Gurteen as well.

I suppose he never saw a hurley until he came down to Cork. Then he became an expert overnight?
Where does he display any technical understanding of rugby union as a game in this article?
He states: "Jonny Sexton was peerless at out-half, Cian Healy was colossal and Brian O'Driscoll was simply Brian O'Driscoll". There is technical analysis for you. Where does he display any real understanding of the game?
Maybe he should take over from Declan Kidney.
He makes sweeping assertions re the Six Nations:
"Leinster are a team of such extraordinary power, poise and accomplishment that they would easily have won this year's Six Nations Championships. It's also unlikely that even the best club sides from the southern hemisphere would have challenged them this year."
What a sweeping assertion. He is basically asserting that they would easily beat Wales and France. Poppycock. They might or might not. One thing is certain. It would not be easy.
Re the Super 15: It is a moot point as to whether they would beat teams such as the Queensland Reds or Crusaders. They might or they might not. I suspect that they would beat the Reds on the basis that they have a stronger forward division.

Exactly. Outside of the fact that he has stated before that he doesn't know much about rugby, you would know reading the article that he clearly doesn't. It's like an over-excited fan wrote it 5 minutes after the final whistle-this team are the greatest ever, the All Blacks, best team in the world, would win the 6 nations, etc-absolute rubbish and then tops it all off with a sneery comment insulting anyone associated with Ulster rugby and Waterford, Mayo or Limerick GAA. I just don't understand how this would land on an editor's desk and him or her to go ok that's a good piece lets put it in tomorrow's edition.

i think its fair comment
when is the last time mayo produced a decent all ireland final appearance? Plenty great semi final appearances but theyve only done well once in my life time-in 1996 draw v meath.

waterford have consistently faltered on the big stage. They've been excellent in winning munsters and taking big scalps in the allireland series at times but just havent done it at semi final time bar once and when they did overcome that they were trounced again.
Perhaps a bit harsh on limerick though- mid 90s side were hugely unfortunate and it was toss of a coin stuff.

Thats complete bollocks, Mayo came closer to winning an All Ireland than Limerick. They were one freak bounce of a ball away from doing so, closer than the Limerick mid 90's side. In fact Limerick brown trousering themselves in the last 5 minutes of the 94 Final would be right up there with any collapse by Mayo, who also went very close in 1989.

How is it fair comment when he is writing about Rugby and to laude one team he denegrades 3 teams from a different sport? Completely unnecessary if you ask me.

It's more of a general comment on the standard of journalism I was trying to make-sorry if it's not as interesting as how much you paid for a train ticket!

You didnt generalise. You said it was unfair to the three counties that were singled out in the article. It wasnt insulting in any way unless you have a serious inferiority complex. That I dont have so the article didnt bother me in any way nor would it bother any normal person.

On the train issue, which do you think people would rather know about. Finding out where they can save a few quid or reading about somebody trying to make a story out of nothing????

Relax lad I was joking hence the smiley face icon-give me your email address there and I will run any future posts by you to check if they're of interest to you before starting a thread. I just thought it was a shoddy article full of sweeping statements and a fairly snide remark thrown in at the end-not trying to make a story out of it just wanted to start a discussion on it on this site which is a discussion forum.
