Denis Leamy has announced his retirement via twitter this morning.

Wishing the Boherlahan/Dualla man a happy retirement, he was cursed with injuries over his long Munster and Ireland career.

Maybe Mid Tipp teams will be wary of seeing him in the famous Sash jersey soon.

Good luck to him. I read today he has 57 caps, which I wouldn't have thought. Other than his first few years he seems to have beset by injuries. I still remember his try at Twickenham from the back of a lineout. (2006 I think)

Injuries and all he'll still be a loss to Munster as they risk losing all their veterans around the same time.

Bad blow for Munster now. Alot of attention has been paid to the retirement of the likes of David Wallace, Mick O'Driscoll and John Hayes but in the last 18 months they've also lost to early-retirment Ian Dowling, Barry Murphy, Jerry Flannery and now Leamy and Darragh Hurley through injury. Very hard to replace all of those, especially with the IRFU clamping down on overseas players.

A legend. He was versatile and as tough as nails.
A big loss to both Munster and Ireland.

All the best to Leamy in his retirement-owes Munster or Irish rugby nothing and a warrior on the pitch. Not that they didn't need to anyway, Munster most definitely have to sign a top class back rower now. O'Mahoney is going to be a hell of a player and Coughlan can still do a good job at 8 but compared to Leinster or even Ulster now, there is a serious dearth of quality and experience in the back row. Talk of Rhys Ruddock switching seems to have quietened which is a pity as he's another serious prospect so the cheque book will have to be taken out-not ideal for Irish rugby but needs must. Interesting to see if Penney brings a few players with him.

And only 30, he tried everything to try and get right but on medical advice he had no choice but to call time on the career.

Sickener for any sportsman really.

Wow didn't realise he was just 30. Feels like he's been around a long long time. Best of luck to the lad.

CP do you ever have anything positive to say? Sad.

Didnt realise Darragh Hurley was gone too.

Wondered what had happened to him, I remember him playing Heineken a few years back in the old Thomond Park and doing fine.

Yeah he was a super prospect - played in the Heineken Cup as a prop at the age of 22 which is phenomenal. Has been absolutely plagued by injuries and as far as I know decided to give up the ghost at the end of the season.

There's lots of great perks to being a pro rugby player but the long-term effects on your body can't be good.

The amount of players that retire due to injury is huge.

Another bad blow for Munster. Hurley was 26 and had a great future.

Munster falling apart, Connacht will fancy their chances as being Irelands 3rd best next season.

I suspect a lot of the damage is done by the style of play of certain individuals and on these end of season tours. Take Ferris for example. He is injured again and its widely known his long term future may be in doubt over knee injuries. Sean O’Brian I fear will go the same way. Ireland and Leinster just use the guy as a pure battering ram and that is going to take its toll. O’Connell is injured again and yet Kidney leaves a space free on his panel to big him to New Zealand of all places if he recovers. Leave the man recover and leave him rest up over the summer. Same with O’Driscoll – he has paid his dues and doesn’t need to be getting clubbed from pillar to post on tour. What age is he now 34? He could do with the rest and blood McFadden or Cave or whoever as centers. We will be without O’Driscoll for long enough without speeding up the process.

The whole central contracts scheme was done so we could manage our players and not have them getting dogged by French or English club side but we seem to be the worst at it now. Bring a host of battered and bruised or semi fit players to NZ for a 3 match tour at the end of a season, but hey they had a night off last October / Nov v aroini or the Drangons so they should be well rested.
