It's an interesting question. Perhaps the answer lies in the deep divisions in Belgium, one Belgian told me "no-one is really Belgian, except the King (of Belgium)". The Waloons & the Flemish really dislike each other & have their own identities - maybe this creates a situation where playing for Belgium is not a big deal with no status for capped players & no real support from fans.

They had a great team in the '80s. Players like Jan Cuelemans, Pfaff in goals, Eric Gerets full back and Van der Elst broke Irish hearts on a few occasions. They got to the semis of the 1986 World Cup before running into the juggernaut that was Maradona.
The Flemish/Walloon differences existed back then too, so maybe they've just been going through a funk. With players like Hazard and Kompany, you'd have to fancy them to give qualification for Rio a good run.

That's pretty much it. It doesn't make sense but you won't really find a Belgian in Belgium. It's basically 2 countries Walonia(French) and Flanders(Flemish/Dutch). Alot of hatred of each other

Lukaku and Hazard are young - Hazard has only come into his own in the last 18 months (big difference doing it for club then doing it for country where lesser international teams these days are so well organised)whereas Lukaku hasnt got a look in at Chelsea in spite of his talent. Vermaelen was a long term injury at Arsenal and also for the national side. Feillaini is a battering ram but not much else. Dembele, Witself and Defour are decent players but not in the same elague as the likes of Ozil and Muller of Germany who topped that group. Tyey finished third behind Turkey on 15 points (Turkey had 17). I'd say a combination of factors cost them.

Two of the best games I ever watched at international tournaments were between Holland and Belgium. Chance after chance in both games. USA 94 and France 98. Only one goal over the 2 games but not for the lack of quality and number of chances.

Most of these guys are still really young, lots of parallels to Clare hurling at the moment. Nearly the entire panel is in the 18-24 age bracket bar one or two. Van Buyten is nearly the sole exception and he's in and out of the team. The average age of their Starting XI over the last year or so has been 21 I think. The average age (of the first XI) over the course of the qualifying campaign was 23, and this was brought up by veterans of Timmy Simons (34) and Daniel van Buyten (34), Euro 2016 these guys should be serious contenders.

True and add in their Euro 84 team ( Clisters, Nico Claesen and the sensation that was Enzo Scifo..played in 4 world cups and played in Euro 84 at 18 ...they were great to watch during the 80s and in Cuelemans they had a great player.

If Mayo or Kildare cant win an all ireland despite massive amounts of effort and tradition it going to be very difficult for the small amount of Belgians who play the game to achieve anything of note

Belgium qualified for 6 World Cups in succession from 1982 to 2002. These things are cyclical in smaller countries. They're in with Serbia, Croatia, Wales, Scotland & Macedonia for the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers. I'd give them a decent chance of emerging from that group.

There was fairly strong talk of forming two countries in Belgium a few years ago. They eat and rink far too much of their own produce to be much good at anything. They should get Tin Tin to play up front. In the 86 world cup they would have beaten Argentina only for a little known lad called Maradona scoring an absolute cracker. In 1990 they were caught on the hop by a cracker/fluke by David Platt in the second round. Thats not so bad, he went on to have a good run in Corrie.

Don't think its that tough. Scotland & Wales are sh*t. Croatia have been decent for a few years but are ageing and Bilic stepping down after World Cup. Serbia didn't qualify for Euros either. Could be a lot worst.

Wasn't it around '92 that Denmark won Europe without being good enough to qualify from the group stages.

Some big fella name of Peader Schmeehawl in goal.

Yup, Euro 92. Denmark only got to the finals by default. Think it was instead of Yugoslavian war/breakup.
And of course the shotlived CIS which played instead of the defunct Soviet Union.

I was a big fan of Sweden, Thomas Brolin, can't rememebr the goalie but his twin brother was sub goalie.
