The Government is to crack down on those refusing to pay motor tax by claiming their car is off the road.
New laws are to be drawn up banning the practice where people can declare their car was not in use for a period of months.
The practice is thought to cost the taxpayer up to €55m a year.
Instead, people will be able to ask gardaí to certify a car is going to be off the road for a period in the future.

Thought to cost €55 mil a year? ...what does that even mean, it either does or it doesn't?

Thought this was the sort of stuff that Hogan would love to be announcing on the people of the country. Haven't seen him for a while, probably the only upside to this treaty.

Some cases are genuine id imagine, as in they are genuinely off the road and not a scam to avoid a few moths tax.
Others are just a scam.
Impossible to put a cost on it.
I think its great that you can pay this online now, remember when you had to take a day off work to tax the car?
