Clare 7-22 - Kilkenny 1-16
Taffe, P Flannagan, D McInerney, K Ryan, J Browne, C Ryan, E Boyce, C Galvin & P Sheehan, T Kelly, P Collins, A Cunningham, Tots, C McGrath & D Keane.
3-11 to 0.06 or 0.07 at half time.
Great performance and still a few players to be considered, ie P O'Connor, S Morey, S O'Halloran, Golding, C McInerney, P Duggan etc

That looks like a seriously talented lineout and the score is very impressive. But KK are not within an asses roar of being that far behind Clare at this grade if at all so a small grain of salt may be required when assessing this CHALLENGE.

Excellent scoring even if it was a challenge.
O'Connor, Morey and O'Halloran almost certain to start in the backs which adds hugely. I would have them all in the half back line but Morey could play in the corner. McInerney seems set at full back now. No sign if Killian Ryan and he is certainly up against it to make this team now.
Interesting that Kelly started at wing forward. Many say that is his best position. How did Sheehan, wouldn't have had him on my team but obviously going well in training. Golden probably won't make it id say. I know he did well last week but there seems to be too many other options.
McInerney will certainly start. It may come down to one of Collins or Tots along with Duggan. Duggan gives a completely different player to the other two and would be a big ball winner in an otherwise smallish half forward line.
Very talented collection of the last two minor teams.

Amazing scoreline. Is there any chance anyone would have the Kilkenny team?
On paper at least, Kilkenny should have their best U21 team for quite a while. About half the team played against Offaly last Sunday in the Senior challenge when they scored 6-25.

Sheehan played well and scored two pts from play. This management team will have alot of hard decisions to make. It is going to be very difficult to move Ryan from 6, his hurling was excellent. He did get caught a bit on his timing under the high ball but if he sorts this he will be starting at 6. That prob puts Morey into the full back line or midfield leaving out Browne or Flannagan, which I cant see happening. So midfield with Galvin and Kelly to Half forward, which in turn will leave out McInerney, Cunningham or Keane from the half forward line. We could have a half forward line of Kelly, Collins, Duggan & a full forward line of McGrath, Cunningham and Keane. That leaves out McInerney, Golden, tots, D O'Halloran (who scored a great goal last night).
The one thing to remember is that Waterford are also very strong along with the rest of Munster.

was just texting a lad i know from kilkenny there who, based on the team he saw on kilkennycats, says that they started with 7/8ish of their best xv. albeit that their best players with the exception of richie doyle ( willie phelan cillian buckley and john power ) didnt feature.
so on the face of it impressive enough from clare all right, but that this clare panel has serious scoring potential should be no suprise to hurling fans in the know.
challenges can be dismissed too glibly. the clare minors were very short order for last years munster minor ( i thought far too short at the time ) based on their results on the challenge circuit.
kilkenny are interesting at this grade in that, based on minor results, they should have had an excellent team last year, but were apparently poor against wexford ultimately. whats the management situation i wonder? it can often hamstrung good groups of players, e.g waterford have really underachieved at u21 the last two years, possibly because they didnt seem to be cohesion between davy and the underage management.

if ryan is centre back then i assume pat o connor would be one wing back with stephen o hallaran getting the other wingback spot. assuming mcineney gets full back that means one of morey, flanagan and browne will lose out. i cant see that happening.
i would much rather see cathal mcinerney in the corner than at wing..someone said that many think wing forward is tony kellys best position.. i have never heard that before..assuming that is the case and that conor ryan has done enough to win the centre back spot could the team be something like this.
taafe,
browne, mcinerney,flanagan,
morey,ryan,o hallaran,
o connor, galvin,
kelly, keane, duggan,
mcinerney,mcgrath,cunningham.
on paper that looks some team.. the u21 is going to be some championship this year.. i dont know about cork and tipp but waterford and in particular limerick are going to be very strong.. i dont know much about leinster but i know galway will be very strong. galway have 12 of last years team plus the likes of joseph cooney, daithi burke, ritchie cummins and last years minors brehony, mahony and johnny glynn..who ever wins this ai will certainly deserve it.

Kelly and Galvin hurl very well together from midfield - I'd be reluctant enough to break them up as a partnership,
Seadna Morey is playing far too well consistently to be in any danger of losing out to anyone imo.
Obviously it's much better to be on the giving and not the receiving end of a such a challenge win, but the margin involved must mean that the game as a formline carries a severe health warning.

Apart from KK and probably Tipp, it would appear that most of the other hurling counties are really looking at their u21 players with some excitement for the future. Certainly the case in Clare, Limerick and Waterford and possibly Galway as well. And rightly so given the standard that seems to exist across the board at u21 level these days. Which should, as usual, lead to a really cracking championship.
Will the AI champs definitely come from one of Waterford, Limerick or Clare or will regulars Kilkenny, Galway or Tipp sneak an u21 AI this year. I go with one of the former this year, hopefully the Bsnner.

you may have touched on something there immortal with pat o connor at midfield.
i think stranger things have happened than o connor starting for the seniors against waterford in defence and subsequently not making the 21s starting line up

Apparently Wexford hammered Galway in a challenge match last week by 4.17 to 1.10

I wasn't at the match so I don't know for sure who was playing but the word around Kilkenny is that only a few of the starting team played in the match as most of the players had club games a day or two before the match, that's the word anyway. Albeit its still a very worrying result for us anyway.
Congrats to Clare by the way, great win (some score to put up against any side, particularly Kilkenny). They're starting to come into their own at underage in the last few seasons, and are supposed to have a good minor side this year as well, its looking like they could be becoming maybe the main force at underage in Munster. It seems the underage work is paying off down there.

kilenny may have been missing a few but so were clare.. off the top of my head they were missing morey,o connor,o hallaran, mcinerney and peter duggan. tnhey are all on the senior panel and will definitely be on the u21 team. whoever kilkenny were missing its doubtbful they are a better calibre of player than the above. though i wouldnt read too much into a challenge match.

the kilkenny team was:
E Meally, J Lyng, D Kenny, J Gannon, L Harney, R Doyle, D Glynn, G Brennan, K Kelly, O McGrath, P Walsh, C Kenny, G Aylward, W Walsh, R Reid.
A fair few from the senior panel there. Unusal for Kk to get a hammering. Given the senior players and the minor win a few years ago, a hammering of this size is a fair achievement by Clare. Well done Clare.

Caimin Morey played four years under 21 for Clare as did Andrew Quinn. Tony Kelly is on course to do so.
All that Cody wants on his senior team were not at the game and Kilkenny at times from under 14 to under 21 somehow underperform in challenge games yet mysteriously improve for championship.

1. Richie Reid
2. James Gannon

8. Cathal Kenny

Re Tipp, we will have a good team for this year but the reality is that "good" is probably not going to be enough to win out Munster given the standard of other team. They were unlucky to lose the minor semi in 09 but made no inroads in 2010 or 2011 although unlucky to come up against very good Clare teams both years.
Tipp are playing KK in the annual Gortnahoe challenge this Sunday at 7.
There are a few lads on this team that will however progress on to the Seniors.
Denis Maher, Thurles Sarsfields, big rangy player who can play anywhere from half back to half forward, would be on the Seniors already but for injuries.
Padraig Heffernan, Clonoulty, might be a good bet for the right half back slot in the next year or two.
Andrew Ryan, Toomevara, is another I think could progress, big strong full back.
Jason Forde, Silvermines, will miss the Cork came because of his leaving but he has turned down requests to join the Senior panel this year with the leaving (grounded parents).
Ruairi Gleeson, Kildangan, Bull of a young fella, fine strong forward who can win his won ball and score.
Brian Stapleton, Templederry, another with potential to hurl Senior, midfielder/half back, brother of Tom who starts Senior on Sunday.
Niall "Bill" O'Meara, brother of Buggy, centre forward or centre back, strong, faster and fitter than the brother.
Stephen Maher, Thurles Sarsfields, corner back for UCC in the Fitz, very solid players, positioning can be a bit off some times but might make it.

That's some hiding. Esp with so many to come into it. Great to see lads like conor mcgrath playing these games. Davy could easily said no but clearly has the bigger picture in mind. This is an excellent Clare u21 team on paper and will be in the shake up to win it. Another u21 all Ireland would be huge. Have to stay focused but we're going the right way and the future is very bright. The game of hurling needs it.
