I don't like the way this trial is going at all.
It's very uncomfortable hearing what's going on out there.

Its the defences job to throw as much rubbish as possible to muddy the case and of course the media has to report same. I woulsd say thought that the standards of proof applicable would not be as high as in Ireland.
I dont thnk the licence payer needs to give Tommy O Gorman an all expenses paid trip to cover the trial. The victim was a citizen of Northern Ireland. Let the BBC cover the cost.

The public gallery are treating it as a comedy show, laughing and passing remarks all the time, if the media are to be believed.

The trial judge is a Supreme Court Judge there so you would expect a high standard.
Mind you the defence team is led by an ex Attorney General so he should be fair able.

If this was any 'ordinary' Irish citizen, neither the BBC or RTE would have sent anyone to the trial. Michaela McAreavey was a fairly high profile person throughout Ireland, the daughter of an All Ireland winning manager, married to a nephew of a a high profile bishop. She regularly appeared on RTE - The Late Late Show, Rose of Tralee, Sunday Game, Up for the Match etc and I recall she co-hosted an Irish language kids GAA based show (on TG4?. her death was definitely news worthy across Ireland. I would have thought that the trial in Mauritius is also news worthy and it is right that RTE and the BBC have someone there.

I think if an "ordinary" Irish citizen was murdered on their honeymoon, the trial would still be newsworthy, but may not receive as much coverage as this case..

I don't know much about how DNA shows up, but according to an expert witness today, no DNA matching the accused was found.
The spotlight seems to be on the investigating police officers now. This could be thrown out before it gets to the jury.
Terrible on the families.

At the same time the accused are entitled to a good defence.

I agree with you Hitch the evidence so far is very troublesome and the lack of DNA is especially so.I think this case was botched from the get go and I doubt very much that we will see any kind of conviction here.Hope I am wrong as this was a real tragidy for the familys involved

The prosecutions case looks very shaky alright now , no conclusive evidence to link the accused but there is DNA traces to the hotel security guard , who is not even on trial.
Also the police have refused to give a reason on why the journey to the police station where they were taking the accused before he confessed took two hours more than it should have, the accused claimed he was assaulted by the police at this time and forced to give a confession. The police can give no reason for the missing two hours.
If this case was held in Ireland or Britain there is a good chance the case would be thrown out by now.

I remember from comments made by the chief police officer at the time when the arrests were made last year it struck me very forcefully that it had all the hallmarks of a stitch-up. I dont have the details to hand but if any of ye can unearth a copy of the Irish Times the day after the arrests were announced and read what the police officer was quoted as saying , ye will know what I mean. Tourism is so so important to Mauritius, there was massive pressure on the Mauritian police to make arrests in the case asap in order to take the media spotlight off the island so that it could return asap to being the idyllic destination for honeymooners.

I think its fair to say that even though Michaela was one of ours, MOst people I have spoken to are worried about this trial. It smells like Bermingham six and today confirmed our fears. Why would you murder somebody to rob a room and know that you will get 60years. I dunno but these lads look stitched up to me

Well Blanco the thing is even if you had a conviction in Ireland most you would get as punishment is a slap on the wrist gaol time or even a suspended sentence.I shake my head at some of the sentences I have seen go down for various crimes in that country
