Suarez: Conscience is clear in racism row

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has reopened the racism row which dogged his - and the club’s – season by describing his eight-match ban as strange and insisting his “conscience is clear”.
The Uruguay international was banned after an independent panel appointed by the Football Association found him guilty of racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra in a match at Anfield last October.
Suarez insisted throughout he had done nothing wrong and has never publicly apologised to the Frenchman.
And he still feels a sense of injustice now.
“The suspension, I suppose, you could call strange and unbelievable,” the 25-year-old said in an interview with Russia Today.
“There was not a single convincing proof that I had done any of the things they accused me of doing.
“I accepted it without saying anything, obviously because they could have made [the suspension] longer and it would have just made the whole thing continue, but my conscience is completely calm, and so is that of the club and my family.
“Everyone knows that in Uruguay there is a huge black population.
“I had team-mates and friends of both colours all the time in the national team, in Liverpool, in Holland, where the majority are from Surinam, and I never had any problem with them.
“Holland is one of the countries in the world where there is the highest number of black players and at no point was there an issue.”
Suarez suggests there was a conscious campaign to get him suspended, but although he remains unhappy with his treatment by the Football Association and the media, he did not specify whom he blamed for that.
“It seems to me they had to get rid of a Liverpool player and, well, they definitely were gratified by all of this,” he added.
“What the English press has said about me does not interest me.
“What interests me is what they say about me in Uruguay and in Liverpool, and they have always been very supportive.
“After the suspension I was told the fans would taunt me, they would whistle me, insult me and shout at me, but to be honest it is not something I was worried about.
“Everyone whistled me in all of the stadiums I played in all the time any way, even before the allegation of racism.
“I tried to pay it as little attention as possible to focus on what I like to do, which is to play.”

he's a winner and his case is another example of the xenophobia and ignorance of other cultures that you get in waspish nations. I have in laws who I can call negro for good or bad or whatever. Fact is Evra, a has-been and. was feeling the pressure in a big match. He is finished whilst Suarez will be a big player for the next number of years. I won't even mention the french national team or what Evra admitted to calling Suarez.
the people who give him stick for the world cup handball are even funnier than the hillbillies who have n't been further than their local pub since they left school. If I played with Suarez and he didn't try and stop a certain goal I wouldn't be too impressed. Rob Jones (?) could have stopped Cantona's effort in 1996 too.
I bit, but I need a rant today. I'm home for a long weekend when my mates are playing a tournament out of town.
The fact that they are rehashing this story is another example of the desperation and poverty of modern journalism in general. They don't even bother to do any research on the crap they write.

i think you are conveniently overlooking the obvious fact that Louis Suarez is not a very nice man, not a very nice manat all.

Hard to know what to take from that interview as a lot of it is probably lost in translation.
Spanish to Russian to French to Dutch to English.

I know soccer players aren't supposed to be the smartest but this guy takes the biscuit. The season is over, this has all but blown over at this stage so the chance to start the season next year with a clean slate. No he brings it back up trying to keep his name up in lights-he'd be better off trying to score a few goals and make headlines that way. Idiot.

He might be basing it on his biting of opponents in Holland, headbutting a referee in his teenage years, bringing his club in Holland to court to get a transfer to Ajax, giving the middle finger to Fulham fans....

I have snook out for a beer in the intervening hours and am feeling much better.
I still love the boy Suarez though. May he bite each of you on the arse for your anti-South American views.
in other news I saw signs of the Republic of Ireland trying to play football. They must have been watching Galway dismantle the Rossies last weekend.

Ha funny post pookeyman. The Rossies looked like lads caught in a tsunami for the first 10 or 15 minuets last Sunday right enough. They looked like a Chinese fire drill trying to quench the wind.

My mate was saying last night that Suarez does lots of charity work that doesn't get reported in the press.
Can anyone confirm or add to that?
I still don't think he's a very nice man.

Harry..i see RVP is saying what ive been trying to tell you and other Arse fans all season..its about winning silverware. Reports today that he doesnt give a fig about being the highest earner at arsenal or getting a super duper deal to stay, he wants to win silverware - thats what will keep him at Arsenal, a commitent from the club that they can win something, at least he is honest i suppose.

Well he doesn't score enough goals for the baggage he brings-Stephen Fletcher, Danny Graham and Grant Holt all outscoring the lad this season among many others. I know you take all of your opinions from LFC fans forums but 11 league goals is hardly setting the world alight-in fact his behaviour this year and lack of goals helped lose his manager his job so I would imagine the owners will expect a few more goals from him this year considering the damage he did to the brand.
Btw, I would agree with you that he probably didn't the interview with me specifically in mind but I felt I could still comment none the less.

Jelavic pretty much scored as much as him and he only came after Xmas, now there's a guy that knows where the goal is and zero baggage and bought for a steal
