Gaelic football set for June 9

By Trevor Howlett

The stage is set for the first sanctioned Gaelic football to be played in Fort McMurray in several years.

The Fort McMurray Shamrocks are the host team for the first leg of the Alberta Cup to be held at the rugby field beside Westwood Community High School in Thickwood on June 9.

The other teams competing with the men’s team are the Edmonton Wolfe Tones, Calgary Chieftains and Red Deer/Lethbridge Eire Og.

Confirmed for the women’s tournament are Fort McMurray and Edmonton, but it’s likely Calgary will also be competing. This tournament will be the debut of the ladies’ team.

The men’s team made it to the final last season, which is impressive given it was the team’s inaugural season. The Alberta Cup was eventually won by Edmonton. The second leg of the Alberta Cup will be held in Calgary July 7
