Eire-og keep up promotion push
Clare cup rd 7
EIRE-OG………1-13
WOLFE TONES…………1-10
By Michael O Connor.
Sweltering heat that was mixed at times with a relieving breeze welcomed hurlers and patrons to a rock hard Eire-og pitch for this round 7 tie on Saturday evening. Eire-og, fresh from intermediate success have as their primary aim this season to secure promotion to 1A of the cup for 2013 and a Clare cup semi final spot. It appears that this is now a three horse race between Kilmaley, Mills and the townies with the other two clubs now at a disadvantage with their respective county players unavailable for the remaining two round.
Wolfe Tones were rocked during the preceding 72 hours by the departure to South Africa due to work commitments of team manager and Wolfe tones legend Patsy Keyes. The popular Limerick man who over the last decade plus was one of the most respected hurlers on the Clare hurling circuit and did much to lead the Tones to county final success in 2006 and was also lining out this year for the club junior B hurlers.
From these two perspectives a home win looked the banker bet for the weekend yet Eire-og were far from impressive against a Shannon side that lacked pace upfront yet had the games best performer in corner back John Guilfoyle. Indeed Eire-og drew a collective sigh of relief at the final whistle to be three points clear as they were clearly second best in the last quarter against the visitors who grew with confidence and were unlucky to be five points adrift at the break.
Bobby McPhillips and Danny Russell who marked each other for the outing shared the opening four scores all from frees by the 10th minute as the home side were aided by a stiff breeze. The first score from play emanated from Ronan Keane and this was added to by Russell’s first from play and when Mark Fitzgerald sent over a speculative effort at the end of the first quarter Eire-og surged (0-5) to (0-2) clear. When it appeared the Wolfe Tones were about to surrender they began to up their collective performances despite hitting a number of wides that proved costly as Eire-og for their part often mishandled puck outs and mistimed passes. Bobby and Gareth McPhillips who was introduced for Johnny Bridges narrowed the Eire-og lead to the minimum.
Eire-og finished the first half the better outscoring their rivals (1-2) to (0-1) with Danny Russell responsible for the Eire-og scores. Alan Hehir hit the sole Wolfe Tones score. Indeed Russell’s goal was a spectacular spinning effort from 60 yards that curved past Paul Hogan in the Shannon goal catching him by surprise to leave Eire-og (1-7) to (0-5) ahead at the break yet far from assured that they would win the game.
The opening minutes of the new half suggested that Eire-og had enough done to win the tie as they hit three points in a row from Russell (2) and Keane before Bobby McPhillips led from the front with a powerful score to leave seven points between the sides. Garetn McPhillips added a free three minutes before a great score from Eire-og wing back Kevin Moynihan drew great praise from the home support. The next score livened up the game no end as a Kevin McCafferty sideline cut rebounded out and Gareth McPhillips blasted the ball to the Eire-og net and when Mark Regan hit a brilliant score the Eire-og lead had been cut from seven to three in moments. It was now all Wolfe Tones as Eire-og were on the backfoot and very nervous in possession. Two further frees converted by Gareth McPhillips left the minimum between the sides as the game entered the final five minutes.
Eire-og who were without anything up to seven of the first twenty panellists somehow got a second wind despite hitting a number of wides and were most thankful for Brian Dolan and Danny Russell (free) in the dying minutes to seal their sixth win in a row in the Clare cup as Wolfe Tones will hope for midtable and safety.
The home side have much to do to make a real impact in the championship yet promotion and a long run in the senior B might suffice as Wolfe Tones need pace upfront to help their overworked defence and midfield. Eire-og had solid displays from Mark O Donnell, Cormac O Regan, Kevin Moynihan, Tadgh McNamara, Mark Fitzgerald, Fergus Flynn in patches and Danny Russell. Wolfe Tones were led well by John Guilfoyle, Bobby McPhillips, Kevin McCafferty, Gary O Connell, Barry Loughnane, Gareth McPhillips and Shane Chambers.
EIRE-OG: Philip Walshe, Ciaran Hanna, Cormac O Regan, Ronan Cooney, Kevin Moynihan (0-1), Fergus Flynn, Mark O Donnell, Mark Fitzgerald (0-1), Tadgh McNamara, Ronan Keane (0-2), Danny Russell (1-8), Niall McMahon, David Durack, Brian Dolan (0-1), David O Halloran.
WOLFE TONES: Paul Hogan, John Guilfoyle, Brendan Hughes, Barry Loughnane, Shane Chambers, Bobby McPhillips (0-4), Gary O Connell, Kevin McCafferty, Mark Regan (0-1), Alan Hehir (0-1), Kieran Argue, Ronan Hehir, Johnny Bridges, Jamie Walker. Subs: Gareth McPhillips (1-4) for Bridges, Martin O Connell for Argue
REFEREE: Michael Fitzgerald (Ballyea).

Eire Og were missing many starters who would be very important to the starting team. The players missing were Barry Nugent, Noel Whelan, Aaron Fitz, Damien McMahon, Shane O'Donnell, Kevin Brennan, David Reidy, Thomas Downes. They have been missing all these players for the duration of the clare cup so far and have won 6 outa 7 games so they are doing well. All these players will add alot to the starting team come championship.

ZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZzzzzzzzzzz. Dynamic reporting once again. I like the pointless comment about the pitch being 'rock hard'.

Were you at the game Time!!!? Is it an accurate reflection of what happened?
It reads to me like Eire Og won it out of pure luck.
Remarking that Eire Og are in a strong position only because Kilmaley & the mills will be missing inter county players.
Eire og shoud be relieved as they were 2nd best in the last quarter.
A guy that scores 1:8 had a 'solid display'

You came on here and clearly attempted to post an insult at Outsider who often reports on games for those of us to get an insight on games we cannot attend. Outsider reports on games and this is how he interprets them and that is fair enough. I think you would have been better off not to attack his report but to post your own. I wasn't at the game which is completely irrevalent.

The phrase Outsider used was that The Mills and Kilmaley would be "at a disadvantage with their respective county players unavailable for the remaining two round." Surely that is a fact. Their better players who are on the County panel cannot play the last 2 rounds. What's the priblem with reporting that?
Look at the title of the thread.... Russell Rocks.
Eire Og scored 3 points in the last 20 mins or so. Tones scored 1-4 during that time so yeah they were probably relieved.
As for the pitch.... everyone who hurls know that Eire Og have a great pitch for drainage and bad weather but that it is totally rock hard in good weather.

Was at the game and would have to say it is a very accurate account of affairs.

Just ignore him Time, Slow hands is a Eire Og cheerleader, therefore any negative comments about their concrete pitch or facts about other teams missing key player obviously helping the townies leads him to throw his toys out of the pram.

I'm not a cheerleader buddy, I'm a supporter. Hows your new project going? are you all set to destroy another generation of Ennis youngsters?

I happen to think his insight was wide of the mark. I asked if you were at the game as interpretations can differ, thats all. If the man puts his reports out to the general public, he is open to people questioning his interpretation of things. I'm entitled to do that and defend certain things in the same way that you or he is. I'm sure he will come on here and defend himself if he deems it necessary. All reporters get criticised. Get over it.

Was at this match and while I wouldn't agree with everything outsider says the gist of the report is correct.
It looked like a game that Eire Og were going to win handy with 15 mins gone in second half. They were 7 up at this stage. Then sub garret mcfillips got a goal , good goal but poor defending . Wolfe tones got right on topp then and Eire Og missed a few frees which could have sealed it. At best I would say the performances were solid . Thought it was a pretty poor game with very little forward talent in sight.
Danny's goal was very fortunate, not a spinning 60 yarder. He dropped it from just below the crossbar .
Good win all the same. That's a lot of tight games that we've won, tubber, DB, Shannon.
