Was following twitter tonite and many in the Irish media tweeting on Jedward and the Eurovision. Meanwhile 32 children were killed in Syria today. Further to the topics on fads of the Celtic Tiger and Recession the biggest fad of all is our self obsession, insular views where the big story is the idiot that bought or built houses that he can't pay for/or sell.

We are still a ----ed up little country dealing with our colonial past which has made most of us obsessed with land and property.

When 32 kids have been killed we're more interested in a pair of asexual idiots with zero talent and a product of the z-list celebrity age, where occasionally, if you're lucky you can make it in the "music" industry.

When is Ireland going to "take its place among the nations of the earth" in a meaningful sense, and not just a be a boil on the arse of humanity as we are now?

What do you want us to do about it.Not too long ago since we made the bad headlines ourselves but finally the puzzle was solved.Irish people have always stood tall in this world and here is one Irishman that will never tip the cap to anyone. For the size of our country its citizens can be proud that it gave a hell of a lot more to the world than it has taken out.

Democracy is a great thing to fight for and to preserve it. The Syrian people's attempt to overthrow the brutal and cowardly regime is an exaple of amazing bravery.
Should there be airstikes on the Syrian regime? I believed that the Anglo/French millitary support for the rebel movment in Libya was with an element of vengence, to overthrow Gadaffi. Gadaffi's regime of course blow up 2 airliners in the 1980's. One was the Pan-Am Lockerbie disaster and the other a French airliner, which was blown up, killing all on-board.
There may well now be a certain amount of apathy towards helping this democracy movment, amongst the NATO powers, whatever of the apathy of the general Irish public.
A half mesure could be to let arms in to the rebel movment.

To which of your own countries are you referring to in the first sentence there?

You are showing yourself to be a real prize pri€k there. The US admin couldn't give a fiddlers' about any country that is not overflowing with oil. In fairness, they only superficially try to pretend otherwise.

All very well if you think that people who express concern about children being killed are just 'cluttering up the scene', but if you think Syrian children are less worthy of concern than the children of other nations, then perhaps you might provide us with a list of nationalities you consider worthy of common human empathy.

The 'anti-war' movement only protest when US or Israel are involved, the Syrians can kill as many as they want but you'll never see the placards on O'Connell St for this one

i could not agree more with you

Also 120 killed in a bombing in Yemen and yet nothing about it

I remember Ray Darcy saying before ( dont like him but agree with him here) that usually stories have a 6 week life span in the news before news/media organisations get bored of them

A lot of muslims and Arabs could not give a toss about the Israeli/Palestinian question. From what I have seen on the news I have not seen one Israeli flag burned in anger.
Hopefully the Arab Spring could help the possibility of peace within Israel and Palestine. A peace process where Hamas end their futile millitary campaign, of poxy rockets against the might of Israeli army. Violent resistence for violent resistence sake. New Arab democracies could put pressure on Hamas to lay down their arms, as well as the Americans and the EU putting pressure on the Israelis to stop the settlment policies, leading to the creation of a viable Palestinian state.
Their have been protest in recent times in Israel for social change, such as the rights of musims within Israel proper. A lot of Israelis wish for their country to become a peaceful country within the wider region of Arab countries and not to be a superimposed and isolated country in the middle-east.
As I said the doing away of settlements within the West Bank would help such an ideal.

you are outraged by the lack of humanity shown elsewhere but see no problem casting aspersions on the sexuality of 2 young boys who have never hurt nor harmed anyone in their lives?

Shame on you.

Damn shame on you and your twisted logic.

For shame.

Oh for God sake. You are hardly comparing like with like. If two men (not young boys) decide to sell a particular image for financial gain - they clearly fall within scope of comment. I'm hardly saying something particularly offensive given their behaviour.

Shame....? Get a life.

By anti US/Israel, I presume you mean those in Ireland that are at times critical of some aspects of their foreign policies? So you explain a wider lack of Irish interest in the current plight of Syrian people at the hands of their government, by saying that those who feel the treatment of Palestinians by Israel is wrong, are supporters of the current Damascus regime?

Or perhaps you might care to elaborate yourself.
