Could someone tell me what to have on a good CV? Just looking for a bit of summer work so it would be pretty general

1980 - 1985: CIA Field Operations, Classified, Afghanistan, Berlin, Namibia.
1985 - 1986: Motivational Trainer, Galway Senior Hurling
1986 - 1990: Chief Talent Scout, Playboy
1990 - 1995: Professional Boxer
1995 - 2000: Founder, Google
2000 - 2002: CEO, General Electric

I think that would look good on a CV!

Seriously, keep it short - 2 pages max, provide a list of core competencies at the start and a very short description of each job. As you get older, stuff should drop of the end. Most recent stuff is most important. Don't leave big time gaps. Don't bother with hobbies and interests. Most importantly, don't lie about stuff you can't verify.

Of course it is vitally important for any employer to be told of all your Irish dancing medals won at feises when you were under seven.
Have seen this kind of thing on cvs before.

For a summer job your employer probably just wants to know that you are reasonably clued in, honest and reliable.

Spellcheck the CV. Can't emphasise that enough. If an employer first impression is that you can't be bothered to that for yourself, forget about it.

Highlight positions of trust (handling cash etc.)

Provide references. Even if you are a student and don't have many previous jobs, get a lecturer to give you a reference for good attendence at lectures. Get the trainer of your football team to say you are the first one out at every training session. Anything that tells the employer that you will not mess him around.

Good Luck.

Thanks lads, great help. My last won was way too long.
My last one was like this.

Personal Details-Name, Address, DOB, Contact Details (Home/Mobile No., Email)
Is there anything else to be added here?

Education-Schools Attended(Primary/Secondary), Exams listed that I have taken e.g Junior/Leaving Cert, College.
Is there a need to say what I got in junior/leaving cert or should I say i did these exams? What should I say about college. Just what course I am doing or should i expand?

Personal Information-Achievments..used way too many such as GAA/Soccer medals, school awards, couple of courses completed etc.
Is there a need for all this really? Possibly only included courses completed and awards

Qualities-just listed out 3/4 such as good communiation/leadership.hard working etc. probably need a few more

Interests/Hobbies-Member of GAA/Soccer Club etc. just listed out interests in other sports etc. Similar to achievments. should i leave out the sports side of things?

Work experience-not much to comment on really. Just a bit of part time work here and there. should I mention work experience that i did in secondary school??

Just listed 2 referees after that.

Just wondering what I can improve on in each section. Would be grateful for a bit of advice. It was 3 pages so I need to cut down a bit.

You should always tailor a CV to fit the position you're applying for, highlight relevant skills and qualifications, when it comes to education, don't list out all the subjects you studied. Mention that you studied relevant ones (possibly), provide your overall LC result and final (or most recent) graduating mark from University (if applicable). In terms of achievements, keep it brief. If talking about GAA don't say you won medals at U-14, U-15 etc. Just say that you have won numerous medals through participation with the local GAA team, do mention any personal awards you have won. Keep hobbies/interests to one line. As for work experience, you say the company you worked for, the (approximate) dates you worked for them and some of your key duties, highlighting the ones that indicate trust from your employers.
I'd keep the personal details (name, address, dob, e-mail, phone, etc.) in the header of the document rather than in the body of the CV itself. Always important to include a brief profile of yourself... describing your self and any skills you have that are relevant to the job you're applying for.
Best of luck!

Disagree with this. For a young person's CV or graduate, the hobbies and interests are very important. But make sure you include interests and hobbies that make you look good (depends on job of course) e.g.

Marathon runner - hard working, good stamina, fit
Chess - intelligent, patient
Traveling - willing to try new things and travel, gets on with people

Not sure socialising or sky-diving or stamp collecting or Solitaire helps a cause.

Yes, my reply was a bit tongue-in-cheek :-) I didn't notice that he said twas for a summer job. Of course if you are starting out then any relevant information should be included.

As someone stated above, a spelling/grammar check is essential. Misteaks in them reely grate with sum.

From my experience you need a different CV for every specific area that the job is in. Prioritise career achievements and skills.

Depending on the job, dont overstate past times and hobbies, acknowledge them by all means but thats it.

Can I suggest that you get somebody to proof read it before submission, spellchecker won't necessarily identify all problems!

Just general summer work. Just unsure what exactly to put on it so that's why I am looking for an example.

First rule - One Page

Second rule - Get a professionally taken passport photo and insert it as a Jpeg into the top corner. It will look good in black and white print also. Build name, address and contact details around it.

Then give the following

Level of Education - Name and address of Schools/Colleges

Past Work experience

Interests and Hobbies

Referees

Thanks lads. Just a couple of questions. Is it ok if I dont include a photo and profile. Would personal details suffice. Also just on the personal information I have 3 headings.
Achievements
Qualities
Interest and Hobbies

Achievements I have included GAA/Soccer Medals. Courses that I have completed, Gaisce award, Student of the year awards.

Qualities just listed 3/4 etc.

Interest and Hobbies Just stated a few interests etc. should i say what clubs i am a member of.

Should i mention part time work that isnt really paid..like working on a farm or helping out for a day etc.

Sound lads.
