Utd thought they had him , another sign that Fergie just cannot compete with the big boys when it comes to signing quality players, despite all the noises out of Old Trafford that they are still a big club.

Never heard of him. Here's a bit for people in a similar situation.

Eden Hazard (born 7 January 1991) is a Belgian international footballer who currently plays for French club Lille in Ligue 1 and the Belgium national team. He primarily plays as an attacking midfielder and a winger. Hazard is known for his creativity, speed, and technical ability and is described as a "fearless, explosive attacking midfielder who can change the game with a turn of pace or a dribble".[2][3][4] He has also been described as "a defender's nightmare" and has earned critical acclaim for his playing style, which has led to the media, coaches, and players drawing comparisons to FIFA World Player of the Year winners Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.[2][5][6][7][8][9][10]

Hazard is the son of former Belgian footballers and began his football career in Belgium playing for local clubs Royal Stade Brainois and Tubize. In 2005, he moved to France joining first division club Lille. Hazard spent two years in the club's academy and, at the age of 16, made his professional debut in November 2007. In his first full season as a starter, he won the National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) Young Player of the Year award becoming the first non-French player to win the award.[11] In the 2009–10 season, Hazard captured the award again becoming the first player to win the award twice.[12] He was also named to the league's Team of the Year. Since making his debut in 2007, Hazard has become an integral part of the club under manager Rudi Garcia racking up over 190 appearances. In the 2010–11 season, he was a part of the Lille team that won the league and cup double and, as a result of his performances, was named the UNFP Ligue 1 Player of the Year becoming the youngest player to win the award.[13] Hazard was also given the Bravo Award by Italian magazine Guerin Sportivo for his performances during the 2010–11 season.[14]

Hazard is a Belgium international, having represented his nation at under-17 and under-19 level. Prior to starring for the senior team, he played on the under-17 team that qualified for the 2007 UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship and 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Hazard made his senior international debut in November 2008, at the age of 17 years and 316 days, in a friendly match against Luxembourg. Nearly three years after his debut, Hazard scored his first international goal against Kazakhstan in October 2011.

reportedly city refused to pay his wage demands, u can see where they're coming from.. no such issues at chelsea where the departure of big earners drogba kalou and bosingwa will leave a hole in chelsea's wage spending

united were never in the running

Where have you got that info?
Doesnt say anywhere who he's going to sign for and a lot of sources in France said last week that it was going to be destination Old Trafford. Whcih I found hard to believe for a few reason, most notably his wage demands and the links with other players such as Nico Gaitan, Kagawa and Dortmund and Nick Powell who scored an amazing goal in yesterdays League 2 play off final.

Powell looks like a great prospect. Seen a bit about him on Sky, looks like he can put it about a bit as well.

This guy comes across as a complete tool. He has been dragging this out through the media for the last month. I am going to Manchester but which one? I will announce at the last game of the season. Oh now I'll wait another few weeks because Chelsea won the CL. Fcuk off and make a decision stop being a prima donna.

Looking for €200k a week apparently-can't see United matching that. They can't really compete with City and Chelsea when it comes to money but nobody can. I haven't seen much of this guy play but I've seen him described as a winger-is this true? It's central midfield United need to be spending money on not another winger when they already have Valencia, Young and Nani.

...and apparently he has demanded his new club play him as a central attacking midfielder and guarantee he is first-choice.

The more I read about him I think he would be more suited to the London night club scene and therefore Chelsea are welcome to him.

this is one of the main reasons behind going to chelsea apparently.. he'd have to wait at city.. hes a left / right winger who can play as attacking midfielder or as a second striker, the latter two positions are his preferred and as it happens the two positions chelsea need to fill the most urgently

scoring a hattrick in his final game of the season for lille from the left wing certainly put him in control regarding contract negotiations..

I'm not too bothered about him not joining United. He's a decent player and will do well but not what United need.
Much more interested in seeing someone like Nick Powell come to OT from a fraction of the money / wages and develop there. Also there are other options for Ferguson. The whole Wesley Sneijder thing went very quiet again sicne Christmas...

Guarantee he's first choice? Who the fcuk does he think he is? Sounds like a serious ego maybe not what United need now even if they can afford him.

Initially when I read 'attacking midfielder' I thought Frank the Tank Lampard won't be impressed. But you are probably right re the second striker.

I know, I thought it was a bit mad too. Last time i heard of that happening was when Robinho went to City.

This is the only ego allowed at Old Trafford

Of all the teams after him , Utd would be the only ones who could absolutely guarantee him to be first choice , such is their lack of other options. But once Chelsea and City declared an interest Utd were out of the running anyway.

Chelsea's certainly looking the most likely, especially since we refused to bow to his extravagant wage demands
(and before anybody says anything: Carlos Tevez was already a proven performer on the World stage, as was Ya Ya Toure, who had the added benefit of being on a contract that was about to expire)
We've always been keeping another potential target in reserve; even more than one.
Of course Hazard has long been a primary target, but not at ANY price

Really hard to know what to think of this. Originally I would have been delighted to get him. However it has changed slighlty for a number of reasons. He is mad about money, wanted to be absolutely gauranteed first team position, agreed terms with two clubs then Chelsea aswell after they won the CL final. Maybe United are better off without him. However, there is still a huge positive about this for United. They are going to spend this summer. There will be some players out there that would rather first team football than bucket loads of money. This is an advantage United have over City. No way could City guarantee him first team football all the time. Not sure about Chelsea down the middle. With Torres and Mata most likely for the middle, I can see them playing him down the left where they have had huge problems this season. Kalou, Malouda, Bertrand are just not good enough for this position and I dont think they will want Mata out there.
