No surprises there. Choice so limited that it doesn't leave any room for debate although surely we have better back up than Paul McShane..or maybe not!!!!

I would have liked to see the trio at Norwich in the squad but alas.

No surprises and not a bad squad. A decent bet to get out of the group and a potential game with England on the 23rd of June. I'd focus on the Croatia and Italy games and put out a second string for the Spain match. Get something in the first game with Croatia and then give the backbone of the side a few days off to focus on Italy.

I don't think there's any possibility they will do this. Maybe a very slight chance if they beat Croatia but even then not very likely.

Heavens above but that squad is thin on quality. I fear Stephen Ward is standing out as someone that the opposition will look to exploit. That is why I think Mclean may nick a place in the team due to his freshness / fitness / work ethic in order to double up to cover Wards positional weaknesses.
Hopefully heart and graft is enough to see our lads through.

As Keane was saying in the paper last week, they have to look to the first game and think they can get something out of it. They're in a very strong position if they do that. Could well be in that group that 4 points will see them qualify.

I'm glad McShane got in especially after answering the call on Saturday, and doing so well
Also Paul Green, who often gets a bad rap, because its 'the done thing', even if he's played well

Reb Clark and Coleman are 2 better options imo and the experience of this tournament would stand to them in the future, its a pity that Trap is so short sighted. Although not experienced they are imo far superior footballers.

Played very well on Saturday and this team seem to have a good bond, which is important, given how long they may spend together over the next month.
Few teams will have a very strong 23. Ireland traditionally has had a solid 14-15 and you can probably say the same again now.
Gutted for Foley as he is a real pro. Showing up for every squad with no compliants despite getting very few opportunities. Also same for Fahey.
Ideally, I wouldve preferred McCarthy, Clark, Coleman and/or Hoolahan as replacements for Fahey and Foley but so be it. Unlikely that the likes of McShane and Green will see much time anyways.
The big Qs now are:
Who will partner Keane up front? My preference would be Walters.
Who will be our centre midfield pairing. Gibson is pushing for a starting place and starts again in the game in Italy tonight.
Who will be our wingers? Less uncertainty here, almost certain to be Duff and McGeady.

Fair point but is Coleman not injured?? If not, very peculiar bringing McShane in to the squad.

Who does McShane play for? What is his current form. In my opinion he has been dodgey in previous games for Ireland. But if his overall play has improved over the last year or so, then he may well have earned his place. Clark and Coleman I would consider to be 2 good footballers.

McSahne was not able to hold down a starting spot at Hull so was loaned out to Crystal Palace from January. Did ok but missed quite a few games due to injury.

Not good enough for Hull! Oh thats just wonderful Trap. Clark and or Coleman should simply be a part of that squad instead of McShane.

Clark, Coleman, and Wilson are far superior players to McShane, playing regularly at thr highest level and are extremely competent in different positions.
Hoolahan could have replaced Fahey.
The inclusion of McShane and Green shows how bankrupt in ambition Trappatoni is. His luck will have to end soon and it wont be a pleasent sight.

You're right re some of the players above but don't think it will make a massive difference anyhow. Not as if he's leaving a Paul McGrath or Liam Brady at home. We simply don't have a quality pool of players to pick from.
Trappatoni is too cautious but he has done very well, albeit helped by a fairly handy group and play off draw, to get that group of players to the final.
Doubt if McShane and Green will get any game time at euros anyway.

Whatever about Foley and Fahey being injured, I'm glad to see O'Shea making it as he is a possible first 11 player.
Chat about lads who might or should have made the squad are pointless at this stage, as it's a done deal. No turning back.
I'd worry a little about Ward defensively as well, I'm wondering is there any chance he might start Stephen Kelly and O'Shea as the two full backs?
Though Ward is better going forward and gets the odd goal, and Trap always gets slating for picking defensive players, so he'll probably get criticised either way.

That's a pretty severe viewpoint for sports fans. You could argue no point in analysing the Tipp Limerick match (or any game for that matter) as it too is done and dusted!!
You'd have fairly short topics on forums like this!!

Maybe they are, and maybe they aren't, but Trap is right to pick somebody who he knows is fully committed to his system.
Perhaps, as with McGeady on Saturday, McShane will take this opportunity to advertise his services to prospective employers.
Ditto, Paul Green

My grandmother is superior to Paul Mc Shane. I'd say there are quite a few players plying their trade in the League of Ireland at present who would be superior to McShane. If he gets to play any competitive football out there we are fcuked entirely. Remember the collective groan of the nation when he came on as a late sub against France in the World Cup play off? If we had a decent defender anywhere near Henry when he handled the ball, that ball would have been cleared + would never have entered the net.

Given all the problems and distractions that Italy are dealing with at the moment (cops visited their training ground again today) it's a great chance to get a result off them, you can be sure that Trap will be targeting a result against his native land.

You're right there Jim, Trap is right to go with guys who know the system and know their roles in it rather than brining in a load of fresh faces and have to dedicate a lot of time to them familiarising themselves with it, if any of those were to be on the plane they would've needed to have been at any of the training camps (which many players withdrew from) or have been involved in the qualifying campagin to some degree. The upcoming WC campaign is the time to introduce these lads to the squad, not the eve of the championship.
