Liverpool's search for a new manager is due to end this week with an announcement expected on Friday.
Wigan's Roberto Martinez had been the front-runner for a long time, only for Swansea's Brendan Rodgers to take over as the bookmakers' favourite overnight.
The tension is unbearable at this stage!

Either of these 2 get the job and i wouldn't be too happy if i was a Liverpool fan.

A bit sad but predictable that a great club like Liverpool can only attract this level of manager. Can't see either one being strong enough for the job. You would imagine some of the bigger name managers would want to manage a club that is still one of the top 10 in Europe but the negatives are probably too large for them. The owners obviously have no patience and want instant results. No Champions League to attract top players. Losing money and have to borrow to stay in business so can't imagine any big outlay in transfers. Tough job for whoever gets it.

Can you imagine either of them telling Gerard or Carragher with their Champions league medals or Reina with his World cup winners medal what to do.
"What have you ever won Gaffer ?"
Martínez... The third division with Wigan
Rodgers......ah nothing

ESPN have gone with the Friday for an announcement as it seems a logical date with new sponsor coming on board on June 1st and possibly DOF being unveiled on the same day, with replacements Jen Chang & Billy Hogan (communications & Commercial director) all being unveiled in the 1 go. A knd of symbolic stamp of FSG on the club, making it really 'their' club.
That and the fact that Dave Whelan wants an answer by Thurs, this doesn't necessarily mean that a new manager will be announced, the media have been coming out with diff stories on this one and then counteracting these constantly.
Whoever is named manager, it looks like it won't be in the traditional sense but 1 of a team of 4 consisting of Martinez/Rogers, the DOF (Van Gaal being favourite) with Jose Segura & Rodolfo Borrell stepping up to senior level.
A model similar to Munich, Juve, Barca etc where it's not just the manager (although I'd guess the manager in this situation will have less say than the other clubs).
One thing that might see Rodgers taking the lead over Martinez is the fact that he spent time in Barca looking at ideas, philosophies etc whilst Van Gaal was there, so maybe there's already a relationship built from there.

The same as someone like Klopp had before turning Dortmund from mid table to back to back Bundesliga's, the same as Benitez had won before he got the Valencia job, lower level promotions/relegations.
Other countries appear to be more willing to give young managers a chance at the bigger name clubs than in England.
If they're looking for Van Gaal as DOF, why not make him manager, he wouldn't be long putting any senior players back in their box if some of the stories are to be believed.

My worry is the game is littered with managers who have 1 good season or are flavour of the month and are then gone..look at Brown at Hull, teamtalks on the pitch etc...where is he now?, the worry is neither Martinez nor Rodgers have a long enough track record.
Obviously as someone stated they could become someone like Rafa or Klopp etc but without a shadow of a doubt both represent huge risks by the Liverpool board and should Liverpool start poorly under either manager the pressure will really be on FSG next season.

Surely Liverpool will NOT appoint Martinez nor Rodgers.
It's more likely to be AVB or even Benitez again.

AVB would have the same problems at Liverpool with Gerard, Reina and Carragher as he did at Chelsea with Terry, Lampard and Drogba. And if things started to go wrong he would be reminded of it.

AVB would be my choice but seems to have disappeared off the radar.
Martin O'Neill would be better than the other 2.

I heard on Talk Sport that AVB is still getting paid by Chelsea and will do until his contract is up or he gets a job.

Ah murray...chelsea player power is way more an ongoing issue of the ambrovich era than at Liverpool.

John Henry appointed the youngest GM at the Red Sox whe. He appointed Theo Epstein at 28 years of age. I think he is likely to hire a manager under 40 years of age.
Wouldn't Roy do a good job? This would be a very exciting prospect. However, as I am not a Liverpool fan, I am not sure how the fans would react.

The Americans always seemed to want a young impressive manager on the way up from the very start but probably felt pressurised to give a contract to Dalglish last year after he did well initially after coming in after Hodgson left. You sensed they were never really fully on board with Kenny though and that he was just a temporary placeholder.
Ultimately what top managers are out there and available? Not very many. Capello was interested but is no spring chicken and arguably has gone a bit stale at this stage. Rafa even though he had fan support wasn't even considered by the looks of it. Van Gaal I'm sure would love the managers's job but again doesn't fit with what the Americans want and they see him as more a director of football at this stage of his career. Klopp is the outstanding young manager in Europe but was never going to leave Dortmund so soon when they've only had one go at the Champions League.
Any time you appoint a young coach there is a certain amount of risk attached to it as by definition they don't have tons of experience behind them. However as someone already said young coaches have been winning trophies in Europe in recent years so maybe it's a better road to go down that hiring some tired old manager that has his trophies already won and maybe too much milage on the clock.

In fairness Hitch nobody could do much worse than Daglish did last year and that was obviously the thinking behind giving him the road. I think next year could be a bit of a disaster again for Liverpool if they go with either of these two as the fans will not accept these two as a replacement for a club legend and as soon as results don't go their way, the fans will be screaming blue murder.
Liverpool fans still see themselves as one of the biggest clubs in Europe hence the frankly hilarious talk of Guardiola and Mourinho last week. The reality, of course, is that any top manager will look at the squad Liverpool have and the level of investment that is needed to get top 4 never mind come within an mile of challenging for the title and most people will say no thanks.
You look at City's squad, United's manager with new players coming in, Chelsea will spend again and Arsenal's manager's track record and that's your top 4 as it stands next season for me. To break into that Liverpool need to spend £100m+ this summer but that's before you even get into a discussion about attracting these players to a club with no CL even if the money is available.
I think these are both two young very good managers but not sure if they are ready for as job as big as this yet-as rr30 says you look at the likes of Phil Brown who was spoken of in the same vein a few years ago. I think it will be one of these though as the yanks seem to want a young up and coming manager and if it is I hope it works out for them as they both seem decent ambitious lads.

Face, most of the talk regarding Guardiola and Mourinho etc started from the media for the imple reason that they're getting nothing from FSG. Different stories about different 'candidates' regularly means nothing, has little to no factual base but sells papers & gets online hits.
Of course fans would love someone of the above mentioned calibre, but that's in la la land. Either of those 2 could have pretty much any job they want, there's far more enticing dugouts to sit in these days than at Anfield.
The only way they could attract a bigger name than Martinez/Rodgers is to wait till after the Euros ans see who's available, but that in itself is a very risky strategy which could easily blow up in their faces and result in things being exactly where they are today.
Whomever gets the job, setting a goal of CL in 1 season is asking way too much considering the money wasted recently. IMO the new manager will get something in the region of £20-30 million to spend, much more is needed, but if this much is invested well, it's a stepping stone.
If they could add 9-12 points to the league total from the season just gone, that would be excellent progress.
Realistically, it'll take 2-3 seasons to get back into the top 4, unless Arsenal or Chelsea go through a very rocky patch or some straw clutching event like that.
