After all, only for Gaybo, we would still be languishing on a derilict windswept & rainsodden island bemoaning the fact that we hadn't a brass farthing between the lot of us and be in imminent danger of complete extinction as we had not yet discovered sex.

At least, so he and his apologists would have us believe.

Well, in retrospect we mus admit he is correct about the brass farthing bit and we have his social class to thank for it.

Never liked him so I certainly will not be watching. Over to you a Thomáis for the report tomorrow. I have other plans which do not include watching RTE massage the ego of some numpty that should have been put to pasture a long time ago. I like Kenny and I like Tubs, I'm in the minority I know, but for sheer pomposity and self-importance no-one beats Byrne. enjoy it Tomás I'll give a look in tomorrow to see what you thought of it.

Byrne did help drag Ireland out of the Dark Ages.

A far more engaging presenter and host than the aptly named Pat the Plank, a paragon of sterility and boredom, and of course the current incumbent who at times leaves people hiding behind their sofas, perpetually terrified that soon enough he'll choke to death on his own foot.

"The Bishop and the Nightie Affair": A minor furore erupted later in 1966 when the Bishop of Galway condemned The Late Late Show as immoral and Gay Byrne as a promoter of "filth". The condemnation stemmed from a small item on the show in which Byrne was interviewing a number of couples to see how well they knew each other. Byrne asked a Mrs. Fox from Terenure if she could remember what colour her nightdress was on the first night of her married life to her Mr. Fox.

The woman first implied it was "transparent" before revealing that she might not have worn an item of clothing to bed that night at all. This response was received with laughter by Byrne and the studio audience, with Mrs. Fox then revealing her nightdress had been white.

However, the Bishop either misheard or ignored this, feeling the need to protest against this "filthy" programme and the "filth" which was being televised into the nation's homes. The Bishop of Clonfert sent a telegram: "Disgusted with disgraceful performance", prompting a swift RTÉ apology which the Irish Examiner states was similar to the apology the same broadcaster issued during the Brian Cowen nude portraits controversy in 2009.
Meath VEC said it was "anti-national", whilst Loughrea Town Council described it as "a dirty programme that should be abolished altogether". The furore died down after a number of weeks, but is still remembered. When the topic featured on the 2008 documentary How The Irish Have Sex broadcast by rival channel TV3, the Irish Independent's Damian Corless said Éamon de Valera "won't be turning on, but will instead be turning in his grave".

Who exposed himself badly with the treatment of both Annie Murphy and Gerry Adams.

A correction there, T. Our discovery of sex predates the advent of the Late Show and in fact dates back to the time TV was popularised. "There was no sex in Ireland before television" declared our esteemed Minister for War. If there was no sex there were a hell of a lot of immaculate conceptions.

You must have caught him on one of the few days in his life he was píssed. Or else he mus have thought you were a squaddie home on leave from Afghanistan or another of the colonies.

Can't see himself and Tom Mac being soul brothers now.

What do you think?

His treatment of R.D. Laing was unforgivable. I was embarrassed to be a member of the human race that night.
