Dowling left 'disappointed' by fans

TEENAGE SENSATION Shane Dowling has expressed disappointment with Limerick supporters for their lack of faith in the county hurlers.

It was one of those rare moments when a burgeoning sportsman ignores the option to provide clichéd responses, instead calling it as he sees it.

“Personally, this is my first year in the senior panel and I was very disappointed with the Limerick public,” said Dowling yesterday at the launch of the Bord Gáis Energy under-21 hurling championship.

“Some of the stuff that you’re being told or hearing or seeing, it didn’t make any difference to us as everyone could see from the performance , but it was just disappointing to see and to hear.”

Dowling is one of hurling’s brightest young talents. Despite only being 19 years old, he’s already an irreplaceable member of John Allen’s team, having also guided Na Piarsaigh to county and provincial club championship titles in 2011.

Remarkably mature for his age, Dowling interestingly touched upon the wide-ranging reach of multimedia in the modern era and the pressure the likes of Twitter and online forums can heap upon sports people in Ireland.

“It doesn’t mean anything to the players. Because if it did we’d have been beaten by 30 points in Thurles. It would have been a waste of time turning up.

“As someone said to me, it must have been an awful feeling going up knowing you were going to get a trimming. Why do you have to listen to this? We knew we weren’t going to get a trimming.

“I’d just ask the Limerick public to leave us do what we can because at the end of the day, some of us are full-time workers, some of us have families with kids and don’t get paid anything for it. We try our best and I hope that they realise that.

“We were eight points up against Clare and regardless of whatever happened it shows that we’re there or thereabouts.

“It showed against Tipperary, we’re there or thereabouts. Now, there or thereabouts isn’t good enough. We have to get over that.

“It’s nice to hear positivity coming from your own people. Maybe it’s just my inexperience coming in the first year but even these online forums, thank God I don’t go near them but some of the stuff that I do hear is ridiculous. People behind keyboards writing stuff about you, it’s ridiculous.

“You just ask for patience. It’s a learning curve and maybe in another two or three years if nothing happens then maybe it’s time to start talking.”

Dowling landed 0-8, four from play, in his Munster championship debut at Semple Stadium a fortnight ago and despite many onlookers concluding Limerick’s fitness down the straight proved their undoing – they led the game by seven points with 20 minutes left on the clock – he saw it differently.

“Absolutely not. It’s just all rumours. It’s just people looking for excuses. You look at Séamus Callanan, the Bonnar Maher, Shane McGrath, these are All Star guys coming on, All-Ireland winners, with 10 minutes to go.

“Any team might get a small bit lethargic in the last 10 minutes and then when you have these guys running at you it’s just a bit hard. Maybe if we were in Division 1A the experience would tell a bit.

“If we got a goal during our spell , regardless who came on, I think we’d have got there. But that’s the way it was and that’s the way it ended.”

Dowling is adamant Limerick hurling is making progress and feels this has been evident since they won the Division Two title last year.

“In 2011 Donal O’Grady came down and did a great job, John Allen is doing a great job; we’re slowly getting there. Just hopefully people will buy into that. I think people have now realised that we aren’t at it – but we’re not too far off it. Hopefully we’ll get there but we need every bit of support that we can get.

“Maybe, I’ve been lucky in the fact that I won the Harty Cup with the school and then last year with the under-21s , this year we’ve been having a good run with the club.

“I’ve lost a lot of things as well, two All-Ireland finals with the school and many other things. It’s something that, I suppose, there’s a few of us going into the senior set-up and unless we win, unless we win a Munster or an All-Ireland the year’s going to be a failure.

“We haven’t reached a Munster final but the All-Ireland is still there and we’ll make a go at it and see where it takes us.”

Sounds like he may have been hearing what ProjX in particular was saying about Limerick here.Of course ProjX clearly isnt a fan of Limerick and it is doubtful that he has ever even been to a Limerick hurling match in his life.

Fair play to him for saying it like it is. It is only a matter of time though before you have people on here saying that he shouldnt be speaking his mind. Declan Hannon spoke his mind a few weeks ago and some people slated him for it. Like Shane said, that is the sh!t you have to listen to from some Limerick hurling supporters

Massive difference. Hannon commented on the opposition. Dowling didnt. Given John Allens views on the internet, he will be proud of Dowling!

Fair dues to the youngster he is a top top player.

He is also a level headed lad and thats great to see. He has put alot of the so called Limerick Gaa fans back in their box here, a top top lad.

I was talking to a bloke yesterday who goes to a lot of hurling matches and he was saying that Limerick GAA supporters sing 'Stand up and Fight' on the terraces during hurling matches.

Anyone else hear this is it true at all?

What other songs do they sing does anyone know?

I have never heard them sing stand up and fight in the terraces but if they do it is fairly pathetic. A song about a boxer hijacked by Munster PLC! As traditional as the bicycle pump! Dowling is a legend. Reminds me of Gazza in his youth. So much natural power and talent and plays with his heart on his sleeve. Limerick hurling is on its way back because we finally after 20 years men from the city adding much needed flair into the forwards.

He'd be better advised to let his hurling do the talking and not be mouthing to the press.

True, how dare he have a go at the hurlers on the ditch. What does he know about hurling anyway.

The headline is a bit OTT really.

Here is a similar but easier going take from the Hogan Stand

Fans' defeatist attitude irks Dowling
06 June 2012

Shane Dowling had expressed his disappointment at the negative attitude of supporters towards the Limerick hurlers.

The up-and-coming star was particularly irked by those who had written off Limerick's chances before their unlucky Munster SHC quarter-final defeat to Tipperary last Sunday week.

"Personally, this is my first year in the senior panel and I was very disappointed with the Limerick public. Some of the stuff that you're being told or hearing or seeing, it didn't make any difference to us but it was just disappointing to see and to hear," he is quoted as saying in The Irish Examiner.

"As someone said to me: 'It must have been an awful feeling going up knowing you were going to get a trimming'. Why do you have to listen to this? We knew we weren't going to get a trimming.

"You just say 'yeah, we have no chance' back to them. Or if they're questioning your fitness and then they say: 'How do you think you'll do against Tipp?' you just say, 'Yeah, we can't win'. Then they'll change their attitude.

"If I'd been 25 or 26 and listening to this for the last five or six years you'd be saying, 'Why do you bother?' We're amateur guys trying our best. Don't get me wrong. There was a decent turnout in Thurles. But how many of those people were going up saying, 'We have a real chance?' I don't know."

Well done Shane you were right to say those things.
I worship the ground you walk on Shane. You and this new Limerick team we have recently which is still growing and evolving excite me so much my head nearly explodes with excitement when ye're in full flight. I believe in this team. I believe we could win the A I this year never this in the next few years lark. Now we know we have a believer on our team. I know now that our team believes. Just rise above those negative twits and forgive their ignorance. You and your team mates are unbelievably fantastic talented hurlers. Now use it. Go like the clappers and drive on.

Who was the self deluded moron last year pontificating that Kevin Downes was wasting his time playing in the full forward position? I’m sure if he was reading some of the stuff last year it would have done wonders for his confidence. I think he was the same fella castigating Declan Hannon over speaking his mind in the build up to the Tipp match?

Fair play to the young lad for speaking his mind anyway , it's easier to say nothing in these interviews only the same boring cliches , his own comments will put more pressure on him that is for sure , but some players thrive on this kind of pressure and play much better under it, there is no lack of confidence there anyway.

couldnt have said it better myself. Some people call themself limerick fans but still would say that limerick are going to be beat badly as many did before the Tipp game.I have never in my life said that limerick will lose.I've great faith in every person who puts on that Green and White shirt. And will back them til the game is over no matter what.

I know you may have said otherwise, but surely Billy you did not really think ye had a chance of actually beating Tipp.
