im just wondering if there are any sales reps that post on this site, im unemployed with 4 months and i kno there ar alot of lads worse off but whilst looking through jobs that are being advertised im finding alot of open but my real point is would they be worth taking if offered a position? are many people buying stuff from reps that come round to your house these days?

They generally tend to make handy intercounty players, in fairness.

I wouldnt wish a career in sales on anyone, and thats coming from someone who has had all the perks, phones, laptops, free dinners, overnights in the best of hotels, new Passat car, you name it.

You could work 18 hours a day for 12 months and have nothing to show for it. In any other career putting in a fraction of those hours would achieve tangible progress.

There are some sales positions that are cushy but they are well sewn up.

I would tend to agree with the guy who says it is a tough gig even though like him I was pretty near the top end, plenty of US junkets etc. That said even though I was good at it for 12 years I never liked it from day one, good money etc kept me there. I work in a job now with about 4 hours longer days but love it and it seems shorter so in a roundabout way I am saying try it, if you like it and are good at it it is a good number.

Just so SLR doesn't get a big head, there are posters with over 200 posts who refer to him like this,

sorry, it just made me smile.

elnino what kind of jobs are you referring to? Is it Airtricity or something similar, God i feel sorry for those guys, it's got to be soul destroying.

Very few 18 hour sales jobs. Unless you did one that didnt involve much experience to start and they were taking on everyone and anyone. I dont know any sales rep that has ever done those hours

Is it true that the car business is expecting an extra slow year next year because a lot of punters won't buy a car with year 13 on the reg?

Second hand sales must be ok?

Since the end of April the arse has fallen out of everything Blanc.
New and Second hand enquiries are non existant as my high post count recently proves.

Alot of people i have talked to have mixed emotions on the 13 reg, some older clients won't dream of changing where other will.

Are you in the Car business?

I've been trying to trade in a car as part of a cash purchase and it's a pain in the arse.

I am making normal enquiries etc but it's like the lazy so and so's want me to do all the work for them. Nothing along the line of an actual sales process.

Very strange...

I've heard it all now, people won't buy a car because it has the number 13 on the reg, no wonder the Catholic Church controlled this country for so long

In fairness 18 hours was a bit of an overemphasis to reinforce the point that hard graft does not mean any progress unlike 99% of jobs.

Hah, next year is kaput, and every year afterwards ...if the Mayans are to be believed!

Rent or download the movie GlenGarry Glen Ross and make up your own mind, or go watch it in the Gaiety as it's on at the moment. "I used to work in sales, it's a tough racket".

Mightn't be great next year due to superstition concerning the number 13 on the plate?

If you are happy and confident about the product you are selling, that it has a purpose and price is OK, I'd go for the sales job.

But if you know deep down that this is something that you know people have no need for, or is poor quality etc. basically if your heart's not in it, and the only reason you could recommend this product is to make a sales commission for yourself, you're on to a loser from the start.

Usually state-"no money in house... do not need". In short i hate/loathe anyone calling to the house.....However, any that call to my business i would see.
They are usually- ex hurlers Or attractive (never both, and opposite sex......).Working as a sales rep is tough++
long hours/ driving+++ and targets to be met. I would see as i would have some empathy towards (my mother was a sales rep years ago..), and at least if see me- 1 target met/ 1 less to meet.Good luck elnino; but do not call to house!

I've read this post 3 times and still don't understand it.
