Following on from jimbo's thread about 60s US garage music(the people on here rarely fail to surprise). This is not for local bands who never made it, we can do that another time.
What band(s) do you love that most people won't have heard of, see if there are any crossovers.
One of my favorite bands of all time were These Animal Men, an English new wave band from the early to mid 90s and contemporaries of the better known Echobelly, Elastica and S*M*A*S*H.
I've a few more but everybody probably has at least one, lets hear them.

Used to like Hootie and the blowfish, haven't heard of them in years.
Also Georgia Satellites and Faith no more, rare outfit!

I quite like Shinedown, relatively unknown around here. Their singer has an amazing voice, incredible range. Hurt are another crowd, great hard rock band.

The Sundays were brilliant - not sure if they're obscure enough for the purposes of this thread.

Great band alright, if it hadn't been for heres where the story ends they might be slightly obscure but they probably couldn't be described as such. The Hives, Hootie, Faith No More have no chance.

Mine would be one of Kurt Cobain's favourite. The Meat Puppetts. A childhood of Country'n'Western with some Dylan'esque folk music and then sometime in the late 1970's three teenagers discovered the Sex Pistols. The meshed all that music together and came up with coutry-folk fused with hardcore punk and created the Meat Puppetts.
The songs they played on Nirvana Unplugged came from their album II. A very country fused rock album.
An other album of their's I've listened to, 'Up on the Sun' has some Mexican folk influence's.
However their 1994, 'To high to Die' has an air of cashing in on Kurt Cobain and is'nt very good.

Every now and then I like to throw on the 'Pavlov's Dog' album, 'Pampered Menial' bb.
Its more for the unusual high-pitched almost operatic vocals of the lead singer than any especially classic songs that I like it, as I'm not usually a fan of that style of music
And yesterday's thread reminded me that I needed to dig out that 'Nuggets' box-set.
(I'd rather '96 Tears' alone than any Pink Floyd album I ever heard)
I'm sure most people know 'Crazy Horse' as Neil Young's backing band but their first album is worth checking out

Anyone else love all that old industrial/ post-industrial/ industrial-folk hogwash? The likes of Current 93; NON; Death in June; Sol Invictus; Genocide Organ; and Coil have all had a big impact.
Also, what about Nurse with Wound, Fire + Ice, Operation Cleansweep, Whitehouse, Smell & Quim, and Der Blutharsch?
And fer fun, a bit of Alien Sex Fiend, Masonna, and Deutsch Nepal!

Good call faldo, Silent Shout excellent from start to finish in an era where albums no longer matter. 6 freaking years ago already, hard to believe.
The Black Keys were very obscure for a decade and just made the breakthrough in the U.S., not sure how known they are in Ireland. Great 2 man band from Akron, Ohio, home of Chrissie Hyde. If you like blues rock, check out "Attack and Release". Great live band.
Older vintage obscure, The Blue Nile (A Walk across the Rooftops from 84), and the La's and Shack from the 90s, two great Liverpool bands.

The only band I've left to see that I really want to see are Tindersticks, and if a gun were put to my head I'd say they are my favourite band, to be honest havent listened to much new music in the last few years. I hope to see Tindersticks live this year either at the Electric Picnic(never been) or might make a trip abroad out of it.

Been listening to a lot of The Devil Makes Three lately, very good for a bluegrass band, another fantastic band that I was lucky enough to see live back in January was Fitz and the Tantrums, great show. I brought a bird along with me to see them on a date... soul music and easy beats, worked a treat. Pendulum are another, great Drum and Bass group, big enough in the UK but never made it in Ireland.

Iced Earth,Dark Tranquillity,Sentenced,Helloween,Stratovarius,Ensiferum and Iron Maiden. Acknowledge that the final band mentioned is the least obscure of all listed. The remainder like a pint of Arthur J's-an acquired taste!

The xx. Minimal enough sounds using what sounds like just a synthesizer and a guitar. Fella and a woman doing vocals are class.
The fellas name is Jamie XX he did a remix album of aload of old Gil Scott-Heron tracks. Take care is one of the best tracks on it and it was recently ripped off by Rihanna and Drake along with another track on the album.
