Limerick dealt blow as Carey walks away
By Martin Kiely
Sunday April 29 2012
With just four weeks to go to their opening-round game in the Munster hurling championship, Limerick hurling was dealt a major blow yesterday with the resignation of selector Ciarán Carey.
Carey, who was a selector under Donal O'Grady, was asked to continue in the role under new manager John Allen but the former Limerick star has decided to stand down.
"I had issues with how the team were physically prepared and that trend has been there for a while now," said Carey yesterday.
"We faded badly in the second half against Clare and that should never have happened. We were eight points up and in control but when Clare moved up a gear we were unable to follow and that should not be the case at this level".
Carey is regarded as one of the finest hurlers the county has produced and was seen as a future Limerick manager so it cannot have been an easy decision for him to walk away so close to the championship.
"The easy thing to do was to go through the motions for the next few weeks but Limerick hurling means too much to me. For that reason, I needed to be honest to myself but, more importantly, I needed to be honest to the players. Honesty should be at the core of any inter-county set-up and it would be wrong to stay in a system that I clearly had concerns about."
Carey is well liked by the players and past exploits on the field saw him gain huge respect but standing down now may hinder his chances of managing Limerick in the future.
"I was disappointed not to get the job when Donal O'Grady got it and it was a double blow not to get it last time round," he said. "I decided to stay involved when asked by John Allen and I was quite prepared to give him my full backing but over the past few weeks I have just not enjoyed it.
"It will come as no shock to the management that I have made such a decision because I have voiced my concerns over the past few months about our preparations. If you are to have any hope at this level, you must be able to compete with the best teams, because power and pace are such a major part of the game now. In this regard, we have some way to go."
It seems no year would be complete without some problems in Limerick hurling and Carey says he had made his views known to some members of the county board and that his decision to stand down will not be a surprise to them.
Limerick play Dublin in a challenge game today in Cappamore.

Lads Ciaran Carey was a mighty mighty hurler.
I remember him well.
A top top hurler.

Ciaran was completely correct in his decision to withdraw his services from a poorly organised, badly prepared and unfit team of 'Happy Losers'. Ciaran deserves better.
What is interesting that his act of removing his services has had the effect of waking up John Allen. John now realises this is not a cushy number for a year where he takes home a big pay packet for a few Moral Victories.
Happily Ciaran has been vindicated and hopefully his actions are the beginning of the end for the Happy Losers. Time to get serious.

Got his autograph in the clubhouse in Ballybrown about 20 years ago when I was only a young boyo and was awestruck to have met the man, I also got The Great Tommy Quaid's autograph in Coolyroe many years ago!

Ciaran was a hero to me growin up, but i dont think one bit has he been vindicated by removing his services, ciaran like most geniuses is an enigma, and probably would have found fault with something eventually down the line. John Allen has managed a team to All Ireland success despite what people might say how he got it, fact is he did. Ciarans pride was hurt at not gettin the top mans job thats the underlyin issue as to why he left. Against tipp, we were well drilled, prepared and ready and as the players keep saying they expected to beat Tipp in Thurles, alot of that has to be attributed to Allen and his management team. I for one will give Allen a few years to get us motoring again. i believe we will go far this year despite the knockers ( that come only within our county) and next year we will win the munster Championship and be very close to an all ireland success.

I would respectfully suggest that this topic either be taken off by admin or the starter. There are reasons, most of which are speculation, as to why Ciarán did what he did but very few people know the real reason. Have a bit of respect for the man who has given more to Limerick hurling than the entire coterie of hangers-on ever have.

I am dismayed with some Limerick people's motives on this forum. It surely is true for what Shane Dowling said this week about the negative element in our own support. Some people may believe they have the best interests of Limerick hurling at heart but when an 19 year old comes out and say's (in his first year on the panel)that he is finding the support to be negative ,how long before a serious talent becomes -------ed off and really doesn't bother any more.

Shane Dowling needs to focus on his hurling and not get involved in newspaper articles.
Instead of complaining about the hurling fans who want to see success, he should complain about some of the panel whose outrageous decision not to play have condemned Shane to being a second division hurler.
Focus on the hurling Shane, your inter county senior championship record currently is played 1 lost 1. That needs to be improved.

Limerick supporters have every right to be negative if they feel the need to be.
The Limerick gaa public spend a lot of money (Dev draw, etc) financially supporting the training costs of the team.
Shane Dowling, as a 19 yr old, would want to cop himself on and stop giving interviews to the media. He is barely out of short pants in intercounty terms and he must remember that, just because he has just landed, that we need to wait 3-4 years before judging the team.
We as supporters were rightly afraid of our \s**te going over to Thurles of receiving a hiding. Trainig is not intensive or good enough - go there some night and you will see for yourself. The trimming against Tipp didnt happen but any team coughing up a 7 pt lead and losing by 4 pts have to be questioned.
I love Limerick hurling as much as any one but i am realistic enough to know that the structures within the county and the level of training the seniors are doing at the moment do not give us much of a chance of success at the highest level.
Carey would not have left unless there was a problem. Whatever you say about him, he loves Limerick full stop.
I wish i had something positive to offer but this is just what i think...

Limerick supporters never fail to amaze me,but now have steeped to an all time low by personalised criticism of their up and coming young stars. It is an annual thing for Limerick supporters to be criticising management. From looking at that match from an neutral point of view it was very clear that Limerick played with huge commitment, intensity and hunger but it did take its toll and when Tipp. brought on 2 or 3 all stars, Limerick where not able to match this and got beaten. Tipp being playing in div. 1 and having several all Ireland medal winners on the team and also having played in last years all Ireland where much more experienced at playing at that level. Limerick people thinking that this team can turn into All Ireland winners over night are deluding them selves.

As an outside observer looking at Limerick threads the past few years I can see that you guys are very passionate but a lot of the times completely deluded, especially the negative ones.
Dowling was 100% correct. How many guys on this site ridiculued your chancxes this year, blaming it all on John Allen before a ball was pucked and then came out after the Tipp game saying what a disaster it was despite leading with 10 minutes to go. You expected to be hammered yet you were still displeased with a great performance from a Div 2 team against a team that has been in the last 2 All Ireland finals.
Exactly what are your expectations? I'd be far more postive about Limericks chances in 2012 than I would have been 3 weeks ago. Best of luck regardless.

Shane Dowling is the present and the future....hopefully
Ciaran Carey is the past (albeit an outstanding hurler).
Limerick fans need a reality check.... 8 points against Tipp and he needs to "cop himself on"... Really?!

Some Limerick people are starting to poison the GAA around the city and county and using this site as the springboard for it. I never once in my life thought I would say it, because having lived away from Limerick for many a long year the place maybe means more to me than someone who lived there their whole life and takes it for granted, but I have got to say that there are some people here who at the minute make me feel sorry to be from Limerick. Personally attacking a 19 year old for having an opinion. Anybody carrying on like that should be ashamed of themselves. All of you doing it are nothing but disgusting cowards

Why do people even bother replying to the same fools everytime? Can everyone just ignore projx and the rest and focus on supporting the team and management. Fcuk the wums and begrudgers, let them talk to themselves.
