I know it's been touched on already in the Seanie Johnston thread but I feel Declan Browne deserves his own thread.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Laochra Gael show dedicated to him tonight. What a player, he was genuinely up there with the Coopers, Canavans etc of this world.

On top of that he came across as an absolute gent on the show. The joy on his face on the steps of the Hogan Stand when he was lifting the Tommy Murphy Cup on behalf of Tipperary was, and still is, superb to see. Exactly what the GAA is all about.

Fair play Declan boy, a true Laochra Gael and a big thank you again to TG4 for making this show possible!

Most enjoyable programme and a well deserved tribute to Tipperary's greatest ever footballer. I suppose the Laochra Gael programmes are quite short and can not cover any player's full career, but it was surprising that they omitted the fact that Declan won a second All Star in 2003. A gentleman both on and off the field.

Dammit I always seem to miss these shows, but managed to see most of this one. Is it every Thursday at ten they have one about someone?

I remember well the Kerry match in 1999 and the 'goal' we got. How that decision could have been given is beyond me. Fair enough I remember being in stand and to everyone near us it did look lat first glance that it hit the inside of the net. But considering the umpire was there and had to duck out of its way, how in gods name could he give that decision!

They were so close in 2002, its such a shame players like Declan Browne and John Galvin don't even have a Munster medal to cherish, that's sport I guess. I guess there is a lot of merit that if those too counties could get out of the Kingdom's shadow, they could be quiet competitive in another province.

I also had no idea Brendan Cummins was dual player? Looked up his Wikipedia page, it says he was half forward, was he decent? Did he stay long being a dual player after 2002?? Is there no end to that mans talents??

The 2002 Munster Final replay was the last time Brendan Cummins played football for Tipperary. He played Senior Football for Tipp from 1994 (first year out of minor) to 1998. He made a comeback for the footballers in 2002 and has played hurling only since then. He was a useful half forward and a good freetaker.

Star, does Browne have an AI Intermediate hurling medal?

Brendan Cummins was an excellent footballer.

Had fantastic acceleration and was a beautiful kicker of the ball.

Once saw him deliver a ball by half volley about 60 yards to Peter Lambert in Gaelic Grounds so that it landed just right in front of Lambert....A peach of a pass!

Kicked some super points in his time for Tipp.

He was only 28/29 when he retired. Could he have done a job with the young lads during the Tipp' revival that started 4/5 years ago. I'm sure he would have got a kick out of seeing the young lads coming on and getting up to Div 2.

And Star Gazer, you are right, they should have mentioned the second All-Star.

I remember him from his minor days alright and intermediate but wasn't 100% sure had he won a medal or not. There were rumours that he was asked onto the Tipp Senior Hurling Panel on a number of occasions but declined.

That was a great minor team in 96. I remember the two games against Galway, tough hurling.

Fantastic player. I missed the programme but I have it recorded to watch later on. Forgot he was still young enough when he called it a day.

Is it true himself and Matty Ford played on the same WIT team for one year. Would have been two tasty forwards to have on any side. Thought I heard that somewhere but it could be complete bollox tbf.

Declan Browne went to WIT and played both Sigerson and Fitzgibbon Cup, winning the Fitzgibbon in 1999 and 2000. I don't know if Mattie Forde was there at that time. Maybe he was.

Just watched it now, great player and his loyalty to club and county has to be applauded, i'd imagine he would have been well looked after in Kildare or Laois. As collig said his pure joy at winning the Tommy Murphy cup was a pleasure to see.
Did he ever play international rules?

I had forgotten how big Colin Corkery was, great man to kick points as well though.

Declan went to Australia with the International Rules team in 2003, but was injured (taken out), by a local "hard man" in a warm up game before the test matches and missed both tests because of the injury. He played in the 2nd game against Australia in Croke Park in 2004.

Brendan Cummins got a bad muscular injury in his thigh around 2002 which restricted his running and kicking. He retired from football after that and concentrated on hurling goalkeeping.

He was a seriously good forward, one of a number Tipp had during that period. An attack featuring himself, Deccy Browne and Peter Lambert was one of the best in the country and, with a bit of luck, they might have made the breakthrough in Munster around the turn of the century.

Quite right: "Colin Corkery on the 45 lets go with the right boot. It's over the bar. This man shouldn't be playing football. He's made an almost Lazarus-like recovery from a heart condition. Lazarus was a great man, but he couldn't kick points like Colin Corkery."
