I knew we'd see this but its not his fault. We don't have the players and Spain are arguably one of the the best four or five international teams of the last fifty years. He did well to get that group of players this far.

Name one Irish player that would make the Spanish team? No, squad even?

I disagree, when you look at the players Trap has, it should be considered a great achievement to qualify them for the Euros.
It is a very poor advertisement for soccer in this country.

You are not a soccer fan or a person who loves Ireland as shown by your comments on the match thread so anything you have to say on the topic should be ignored. I'd pay more heed to the opinion of the leader of the Orange Order.

if spain win this tournament, i would say they are right up there with the 1970 brazil team.. and maybe even better considering how soccer has moved on.. afterall it will be 3 major championships in a row..(its never been done before). they have done it with practically the same team as well.

Should definetly be gone but wont. Pick your best players and play them. Green ahead of Gibson tonight. Cox ahead of Long, Walters, Doyle tonight. Cox ahead of McClean on Sunday. It might have still been 4-0 tonight but at least he could say he put out the best team. He clearly didnt tonight and didnt bring the best players.

To call Trap a chancer with his past record just shows how much u know about it.
While most of us are disappointed with our performances and team selections its easy be an armchair/bar stool manager.
He has a very limited pool of players to work with and not sure the players on the bench are any better than the ones on the team.
The thing about the Euros is that there are very few poor quality teams in it and the likes of Ireland get exposed compared to the World Cup where you have Asian and few others from that side of the world where we would have a good chance of picking up points.

Exactly. I think people look at us in the same vein as the sides we had from 88-94 or back in 2002. You cannot even compare 1) the team we have now with the quality we had then or 2) the teams we are up against.
I do feel the tactics and selection are bizarre and dont rate the personnel but we were lucky to be there. We're not in the same league as the other sides in our group and in the competition by and large. Holland are likely to be knocked out in the group stages aswell - what would they do to us for example?

True and good point, outside of Argentina and Brazil on a consisent basis, the best sides in the world are in Europe. Most world cups gone to europe, last 2 successive wins to europe, last 2 world cups finals were all european and invariable Europe supplys 6/7 outta the last 8 every tournament. In essence its like the world cup only Argentina and Brazil are missing.

we got a footballing lesson tonight from the world champions and what we as supporters should take from it is that crunching tackles /long balls/needless running about and head tennis are no longer part of the beautiful game its now about precision possession passing and keeping the ball on the turf now how many players currently available to mr trappatoni are capable of doing that ?
answer nobody nada no one
and dont even start me on mc clean coleman or wesley hoolihan even if we had irelands best players over the past twenty years on the pitch tonight we would have been out played out passed and out classed
ffs they played their first game without a recognised striker and were not beaten then started tonight with one man upfront and it took them 4 mins to find him and hit the onion sack with a bullet on the run
trap got us there and its a credit to him that we did
what happened tonight was no more his fault than anyone elses we were whacked by the best team in the world end of

No matter how we set up and who we had Spain were going to hammer us. We were never going to beat them or have much ball. The way we played put us under more pressure sitting at the edge of our box giving the Spanish players time and space on the ball as we had no outlet when we did win it back.
The only positive I can take from the tournament so far is that there is no way he can justify playing Ward, Whelan and Andrews for the next couple of years. He now must realize that you need players who can hold onto the ball and pass it around comfortably to have any chance of improving. I think O' Shea needs to move over to the centre and drop St. Ledger because he just hoofs the ball out rather than trying to find a player. Whelan is terrible has zero presence and is poor enough on the ball. Andrews put in a good shift and worked hard closing down but doesn't have the skill or vision to link defence and attack. It pains me to say it but the days of Robbie Keane starting every game are over. He still could be a great player to bring on and I think that role would suit him. Given has been a great servant but his agility is gone he looks very slow at getting down to anything on the floor.
We could still play to a similar game plan but just improve the quality of players in key positions such as full back and central midfield. The reason why the Italians are so good at containing is they can hold onto the ball for more than two or three passes and they counter attack when they intercept the ball.
Hoefully well have a go at Italy and a team along the lines of:
Given
O'Shea St. Ledger Dunne and Kelly
Duff Gibson Andrews McLean
Long Walters
Very little cover at left back and central midfield in the squad.
After the euros and for the World Cup qualifying I would like to see a team like:
Westwood
Coleman O'Shea Dunne Clark
McGeady McCarthy Wilson McLean
Long and Walters
You would have the likes of Keane and Duff if they stick around Doyle, Fahey, St. Ledger and Gibson all fighting for places as well. Trap could stick to the same tactics but at least we could have some bit of possesion and develop from there.

There can be no justification for the selections of McShane and Green on the squad. He must have thought they were someone else.

And Uruguay.
European competition has much more higher concentration of quality sides than the World Cup.
Ireland are crap, who the manager is is largely irrelevant.

In reality, Trap is doing what we asked him to do. We qualified. But thats all he is interested in - qualifying. He is a short term fixer - not a long term appointment. He is 70 odd FFS. If you have a good young team and want to develop them then he is NOT the man that you want. But we dont, we want to eke the most out of the dross we have.
Ultimately - The seeds of this destruction were set long ago in the way we coach football - We are turning out players who can compete with medium sized English town clubs.. Not passsing and vision players like they produce in Spain.
They shoud fire Trap and use his wages to send a team of coaches to Spain and bring back the techniques and attitude they have. That money woud be a far better investment than paying an old italian to qualify us for the odd tourney
