Right lads, were stuck with Trappatoni for two more years so realistically be prepared for the same 11 more or less slugging out games games in this campaign pinned to their own half with 30% possession. It will make for tough viewing but there is a chance that they will qualify for a play-off.

However, it must be noted that Sweden are one of Europe's most consistent teams when it comes to qualifying campaigns. I think one commentator mentioned that Euro '12 is Swedens sixth consecutive tournament in a row so we are definately up against it.

I know we are on the back of a pummeling by the best team in the world so I do not want to sound sensationalist. However questions must be asked about Trappatoni's stubbornness in sticking to a 'system' which is totally outdated in modern football. 4-4-2 is a thing of the past. Also Trappatoni clearly has shown blinded loyalty to players who are outcasts in the club game in England. Had Giovanni judged his team by players who were performing consistently in the Premiership his team would have looked vastly different. For the next qualifying campaign I hope to see a change of system with an injection of youth in the team.

My Team:

Given

Coleman Clark St Ledger Cunningham

McCarthy

Pilkington Hoolahan Ireland McClean

Long

Pilkington is most definitely one player I want to see given a go

Spain under Trapp wouldn't win anything so it's pointless even thinking about who the players will be. The fault lies 100% at the feet of management.

McCarthy had a defence of

Finnan, Breen, Staunton and Harte at 2002 and only leaked 3 goals. Our defence at the moment are comparable in quality

Ireland in 2002 did not meet a team of the quality of Spain 2012. Also we had players that were more in their prime back then...Duff 23 , Robbie Keane 22. These 2 are still key players for us whereas if we had any kind of quality coming through they'd have been fringe players for us in this tournament.
I'm not a Trap fan by any means but he did bring us to the Euros with a 14 game unbeaten run, though anyone who looked at it with a bit of objectivity could see it was an achievement built on sand. I dont think we would have reached the finals with any other manager available to us who might have taken the job. He has ignored some good players who should be in our squad this time , but then that's his way and it worked well enough to get us to the finals.
From a footballing point of view it is best that we dont qualify for the World Cup in Brazil but from a fans' point of view hopefully we will...it will be a great party , a great adventure , and lots of beautiful women out there! I think that's the way we should approach it we are lucky enough to make it!

No they are not. 2002 back 4 were way better. Finnan and Harte are able to pass the ball, Finnan never gave away possession.

Surely the point is that Finnan and Harte had someone to pass the ball TO.

In the Euro qualifiers we met one quality team in Russia, pulled apart at home & poxed it in Moscow. The way we play will be enough to beat weaker teams sometimes but rarely against better opposition. We even struggled against weaker sides at times such as Armenia.

When was the last time we beat a side ranked higher than us in a competitive fixture???

To credit Trap, he did get us to Poland/Ukraine. Did people really expect us to change the style/formation/tactics that had got us here?? Or maybe they're only tuning in this week.

While we can complain about our inability to pass the ball like Spain etc it goes far deeper than whomever is manager of the senior team. From underage in club & country in Ireland & England, lads are thought safety first rather than pass the ball around. It's the opposite with this Spanish team, they're doing what they've always done.

I'd like to see us line up 4-2-3-1 but that's far too adventurous for Trap. 4-3-2-1 could be equally as good, lessens the chance of us being overran in midfield.

Without putting any major thought into it,I'd put Long up front on his own & Hoolahan & Walters behind him. I'd like to see Coleman, Andrews & McClean as the 3 in midfield. That's leaving out James McCarthy, maybe him infront of the lone striker, who could be Walters as his ability to hold the ball up has impressed me anytime I've seen him for Ireland
For defence, try the likes of Clark, Dunne & O Shea are still as good as we've got

Some people complain about players that aren't there. marc Wilson of Stoke was mentioned on TV, if he was there and Ward wasn't, people the same people would be arguing that Ward should be part of the set-up.

Not quite sure how Greg Cunningham fits into your equation there badger, he's hardly played a game for City yet! I'd much rather see Stephen Kelly in or around the back 4. You're bang on with that midfield though.

And its fair to say I was distinctly unimpressed when he did play for us

I hope you didn't happen upon any the ads where his big teeth feature prominently then?
(make sure to leave some space in the sick-bucket for me)
