Taoiseach Enda Kenny said today that he would personally support the idea of an all-island football team.

However, the North's First Minister Peter Robinson said that it is an issue that needs to be left to sporting organisations.

The pair met at the North South Ministerial Council summit in Dublin today.

"I would be a big supporter of an all-Ireland soccer team," he said.

"I think they could certainly qualify for World Cups, they'd have a much stronger team.

"But then I'm not in control of that, but I give you my personal view."

If only we had Kyle Lafferty and David Healy we would have given the Spaniards a bit of a lesson last night. Plus we would have the added bonus of hearing Irelands call before kick off.

F**k that. We already pretty much have an all island team, The best nationalist players in the North want to declare for us. An all island team would mean we would have the scummy bigots who support Norn Iron causing trouble at our games, don't think any of us want that now do we?

Is there anything more nauseating than a politician trying to be "down with the kids" and just jumping on a bandwagon.Fcuk off Enda commenting of stuff outside your brief and do the job you were elected to do

Not a hope..The catholic lads in the north who qualify such as young mclean already play for Ireland. Is there any catholic lad playing for NI now? The protestants up there won't have it. Too much division. They hate the south. Was in the north last Saturday and couldn't believe the amount of union jacks and uvf flags I saw in places like armagh city and portadown and such places. they don't want anything to do with us. nice thing to say enda er but its just lip service.

Clueless from Enda. The tiny benefit of a slightly bigger pool to pick from would be offset by the lack of unity both on and off the pitch. There are two different states on this island, two states, two teams.Imagine an all Island football team, where would they play ? what Anthem? Irelands call? jesus spare me.

Could do a lot for harmony among the fans, in fairness.

Most unlikely to happen, could you imagine the headache of trying to police the factions within the Irish fans, let alone the opposition.
They should definitely try and set up an All-Ireland Premier League however. It would generate great interest imo.

Actually there are 4 or 5 Catholics as you term them in the Norn Iron squad including one who played U 21 Football for Tyrone plus a man known as the Derry Pele laid back but far more skilful than many who were in the Rep team against Spain. Also they have a Catholic Manager from Portae Down would you believe. So there yu go.
By the way when go North around this time of year be prepared for plenty red and white not all Tyrone supporters might I add.
As regards Armagh City you must have really rambled off course to come across UVF flags they were certainly not on the Keady or Monaghan Roads that's for sure. Union Jacks on the Mall maybe
As regards them hating us I think maybe it works both ways believe me,I've some knowledge of the place having spent a fair bit of time up there and the amount of Free Staters ,as we are known by both sides, who' have a total aversion to the place is quite staggering.
That said quite a lot of younger Southerners, including one of my own family, have had to go North for education and work,so maybe Enda might be better employed trying to sort out the mess down here so some of those young people might be able to return to this state to gainful employment. Advocating an All Ireland Soccer Team has ---- al to do with job creation. Rant over .

Go onto the OWC website and they have a very long thread all about Ireland at the Euros and it doesn't make for pleasant reading. A UI team is pie in the sky when most Norn Iron fans come from a staunch loyalist background.

Plus would Irish fans be prepared to give up the tricolour and anthem? Because they would have to.

You can rest assured that some of our soccer cousins in Norn Iron took great glee in the Republic's decimation in the Euros, many others trekked to Poland to support us, thats the way the North is and will be for the foreseeable future.
As regards an All Ieland Team, well leaving aside the fans loyalties, anthems etc and Windsor Park being situated in one of the most staunch and deprived loyalist areas in Northern Ireland - the main reasons sre money and power.
The Northern Soccer Hierarchy have too much to lose on that score and by the way the same applies here - John Delaney sharing his role ? I think not.
If you are a Catholic playing for Northern Ireland you cant win - your own lot slightly disown you and the other lot basically despise you- just ask Neil Lennon,Paddy McCourt and Niall McGinn.

LEIC, was in armagh city this time last week almost to the minute. Drove past a hotel where the armagh senior hurlers were pucking round waiting to go to CP. Went further along the road heading for the motorway in the town and saw 2 UVF flags hanging among the union jacks. The man driving spotted them first and pointed them out. Bang in the middle of one of the main streets.
