Tuesday night in Cusack Park at 7.30pm.
Are many people going along to this?

I know Clare are pretty strong this year, with serious competition for places, and had a big win over Kilkenny in a challenge.
But Waterford have had strong minors the last few years too, so has the makings of as great game.

You'll be there all on your own if you go Tuesday.
It's on the 19th of next month.

Anybody give a stab at the team? should have a fairly decent team when you look at the likes of tots tony kelly and flanagan doing well for the intermediates yesterday.. With conor mc grath still to come in, along with a few otheres, they look to have a serious outfit. However waterford will relish coming in as underdogs and have a few quality players of their own. should be a really good battle. Would there be any minors up to it? or is there any called on already?

Waterford not underdogs
after all the trouble in waterford now sorted....
they did beat us in 2009 and won the munster minor
they will really fancy there chances
with the senior team in the munster final which high expectations there also, looks like a tough uphill battle for us

Munster GAA ESB MHC S-Final – Clare vs. Waterford
Déise delight as Galgey lowers Banner

Clare 0-12 Waterford 3-9

By Diarmuid O’Flynn of the Irish Examiner newspaper

Thursday, June 25, 2009

JUST over six weeks ago, Clare beat Waterford in the first round of the Munster MHC, a single point the difference down in Dungarvan. Last night in balmy Ennis, having reached the semi-final by the back-door route, the Decies well and truly reversed that result, and now go through to meet Cork or Tipperary in the Munster final on July 12.

Clare dominated first-half proceedings, and led at the break by four points, 0-9 to 1-2. Could have been more, should have been more, as the Waterford goal should have never have been conceded. From a long Waterford puck-out, Clare centre-back Patrick O’Connor did what he was supposed to do, broke the ball down in front, but no-one in saffron-and-blue was alert. Waterford wing-forward Brian O’Halloran was in like a flash, and from fully 50m tore through the heart of the Clare defence before blasting home from close range.

Clare keeper Ronan Taaffe had no chance, but the watching former Clare great Brian Lohan, coach to this minor team, must surely have had a vision of what should have been. Other than that goal, Waterford were sorely lacking in any kind of threat up front in this opening half, and that blunder apart, their inside forwards were given no change by the a tight-marking Clare trio of full-back Killian Ryan flanked by Sixmilebridge brothers Noel and Trevor O’Connor.

Clare’s Patrick O’Connor was the dominant figure in the half-back line, ably abetted by team captain Colin McGuane and Seán O’Connor. In midfield it was the towering figure of Shane Golden doing most damage for Clare, though Waterford captain Martin O’Neill was also prominent. It was in the forward sextet, however, that Clare were most potent, and none more so than full-forward and free-taker Conor McGrath. Five points the Cratloe youngster scored in the first half, three of those from play, all under pressure, while alongside him David O’Halloran was also on form, two fine points to his name.

Given this dominance then, all was looking good for Clare as they headed for the dressing-rooms. How quickly things can change, however, in sport, and in hurling especially. The spark for this one had actually come just before the break, when Ian Galgey was introduced in injury-time for Kenny Moore – more about Ian later.

The first couple of minutes of the second half gave no indication of the change in fortunes that was about to occur. A wide each to open proceedings, and then, from nowhere, another Waterford goal, and again, it was of the gifted variety, gates open all the way to the keeper. The move started on the left wing of attack, where O’Driscoll won scrappy possession. He parted to the towering Ronan Cahill, who was to have a much greater influence on proceedings in the second half, and again, the parting of the saffron-and-blue sea. It ended with Ronan passing to Paudie Prendergast and again Ronan Taaffe had no chance in the Clare goals – 2-2 to 0-9.

Enter the flying Ian Galgey; 1-2 the Mount Sion speedster scored in a lethal 10-minute spell, midfielder Martin O’Neill adding a couple more, and this game was turned on its head. From four points up at the break, Clare were now five in arrears, 3-6 to 0-10, and with the Waterford defence now very much on top, half-backs Phillip Mahoney and Darragh Fives especially, Luke Egan with some lovely flicks, there was only going to be one winner. Clare never gave up, battled to the final whistle, but Waterford were given that second chance, and grabbed with both hands.

Scorers for Waterford: I Galgey 1-2; M O’Neill 0-5 (0-4 frees); B O’Halloran 1-0; P Prendergast 1-0; F Murray, J Dillon, 0-1 each.

Clare: C McGrath 0-8 (0-4 frees); D O’Halloran 0-2; D Keane, S Golden, 0-1 each.

WATERFORD: S O’Keeffe; L Egan, T Costello, M Wyse; J Dee, P Mahoney, D Fives; K Moore, M O’Neill (c); F Murray, R Cahill, B O’Halloran; P Prendergast, J Dillon, P Mahoney
Subs: I Galgey (Moore 30+1).

CLARE: R Taaffe; N Purcell, K Ryan, T Purcell; S O’Connor, P O’Connor, C McGuane (c); C McInerney, S Golden; D Keane, E Hanrahan, A Considine; C O’Donnell, C McGrath, D O’Halloran
Subs: G Guilgoyle (Hanrahan 40); E Boyce (T Purcell inj 40); D Liddy (Considine 52); A Mulready (O’Donnell 54).

Referee: D Copps (Cork)

What will the Waterford side look like?

1. S. O'Keeffe
2. L. Egan
3. J. Dee
4. ?
5. D. Fives
6. P. Mahony
7. R. Barry
8. M. O'Neill
9. P. Prendergast
10. E. Murphy
11. B. O'Halloran (if fit)
12. D. Breathnach
13. G. O'Brien
14. J. Dillon
15. S. Bennett

Very good team (I am missing a few names I'm sure) but I think Clare are stronger. Pauric Mahony a big loss. Presume Ian Galgey could feature if O'Halloran isn't fit?

would be interesting if bennett played as isnt he minor again in 2013?
the continued mentioning of the relevance of the 2009 minor game is moot enough as id say about 10 of the 19 players clare used that night arent even on the panel!

John Prendergast, Eoin Madigan, the other Stephen O'Keeffe, Finan Murray and Jamie Barron will be probable starters I would think. Paudie Mahony has a fighing chance of making it back by then too.

Luke Egan isn't on the panel.

Stephen Bennett isn't on the panel at the moment because he's concentrating on the minor.

One other thing, Fergal Hartley would want to smarten up his act on the line or we will get a hiding in Ennis.

Ray Barry, Paul Power and Donie Breathnach are hurling out of their skins at the moment and none of the 3 started last Sunday. Ok, young Barry was brought on after 20 minutes to shore things up at wing back but neither of the other two lads saw any action.

We were supposed to be using the Intermediates as a vehicle to blood these type of guys.

In any case the way he set the team up last Sunday was criminal. It looks like he has learned nothing from his stint at U21 last year and is incapable of taking advice from his other selectors. This was the main reason I was against his appointment as Senior manager earlier on in the year.

Persisting with a two man full forward line when we are ten points down was beyond belief.

What would your lineup be Faugh?
What team is he likely to pick?

God that's a tough one NMBG.

Tha lads will be picking from something like this

SOKY
J Barron
S O'Keeffe
M Wyse
J Dee
Philip Mahony
D Fives
P Prendergast
R Barry
J Prendergast
S Roche
G O'Brien
B O'Halloran
E Murphy
J Dillon
F Murray
E Madigan
M O'Neill
D Breathnach
P Power
Paudi Mahony??
I Galgey

I'd hate to second guess Fergal.

God knows he was one of our best ever but he has some wierd ideas on hurling and usually not for changing on them. I would just hope he listens to John Fives and Mike Walsh with an open mind.

Hopefully he doesnt put Darragh Fives in at FB again this year. Darragh is the best U21 CB in the county and that should be his position.

I would love to see Jamie Barron in the forward line as he's been briliant there so far this year with Fourmilewater but again I don't think this will happen.

On form at the moment I would pick John Prendergast and Ray Barry at centre field, both of them are in great form for Lismore there so far this year but again I think this will be unlikely.

Also dont take it as a certainy for instance that Jake will start.

If Paudi Mahony is fit it will be a huge bonus!

Overall though I would just love us to go out as our seniors did last Sunday and play a standard 15 man game and have none of this pr*ck acting around with two man full forward lines and extra half backs and mid fielders.

It's going to be a mammoth task as I would really rate this Clare, they are absolutely outstanding, but we're not bad either so why not just go out, hold our positions and have a right crack off them.

Home advantage will be a big advantage though. Ennis is a tough spot to come out of with a win.

There's a serioius turnover in the Clare ranks since then! The Purcells, McGuane, Hanrahan, Conor O'Donnell aren't involved afaik, Aaron Considine probably would've been if not for his horrible accident last year. Of the subs that were introduced, I don't think Liddy or Mulready are in contention for a place either. Lots of the Minors from 2010 and 2011 forcing their way into the team.

Do the Clare squad have all players available to them i.e any injuries?? Such an excellent squad and you'd be fairly confident with this team that if a player were replaced, the next man in would be just as good. Fierce competition in both the backs and forwards. Could anyone list out possible backs and forwards and midfielders?? Would be interesting to see all players available in there respective positions.

No stephen o hallaran?? or jack browne?? i think those two will be on it. i know the two ryans were on it last year but i dont think that should guarantee them a place.. o hallaran and browne are much better hurlers.. also i wouldnt have cathal mcinerney wing forward.. its either corner forward or no where..
