That was an utter embarrassment, a disgrace from so called elite professional athletes who are been paid an awful lot of money. I can't wait to see what spin the likes of Gerry Thornley and the press pack will put on the latest offering from 'The Golden Generation'.
Its actually ridiculous the amount of coverage that rugby gets in the sports pages, on the airwaves, in the social pages. In GAA terms, its Christy Ring Cup standard that Ireland are at.

I would like to associate myself with the above comments. Its a bad joke the amount of fawning that the media do to this minority and poor quality sport especially given how dire we are at it

We'll have the hype over a Kiwi taking over at Munster starting any day now too...
What a second rate team are Ireland are. It's not Heino Cups or Magners league standards which make a top player. Just watch Hugh Farrelly, Tony Ward, Michael Corcoran, Ryle Nugent, Gerry Thornley and co make excuses for this one.
"long hard season, was always going to be tough. New Zealand are such a great side, we just could not meet the incredible standards of last week. Still it has been another magnificent year for Irish rugby with another Heineken Cup in the locker"

If there was ever an example of celebrating mediocrity it's the positive response to Ireland coming fifth in the under 20 world cup. There are only 8-10 teams who play professional rugby at anything approaching top level

Reposted from before as I've no new thoughts:
What amazes me is that so many people are still trotting out the "why can't they transfer the provincial form to international level" line - even some people suggesting Leinster would have done better against the All Blacks.
The success of the provincial teams has given so many a deluded view of the real strength of irish rugby.
We do well at provincial level because
a - our national team is spread over 3-4 clubs while France and England have 12+ top tier clubs
b - our clubs can concentrate on European cup while French and English have to prioritise their domestic league
c - we add in key non-Irish players to strengthen our clubs
I can't believe so many in the media fail to point out the huge difference between European Cup and international level. Of the top ten international teams, in terms of achievements over either the last 5 or 10 years at an international level, we are only ahead of Scotland and Italy.

The gas thing is I've read in print the likes of Neil Francis pedalling the line that the Heineken sponsored European Cup is a higher standard than international rugby!

Ya I found this a little bit pathetic myself when I heard it on the radio the other evening. Forget who the reporter was, but the attempts to talk up a 5th/6th place playoff were unreal!!..
For as long as Irish Rugby has a Handicap over opther nations in club rugby the longer the national team will suffer and the idiot pundits will continue to make excuses for it!

A great month for the GAA!
The soccer scum disgraced on the world stage and now the rugby shower slaughtered 60-0.

Not a great month for anything sports related to be fair. I just hope now that the same criticisms that GAA and soccer teams are subjected to after abject performances are now applied to the rugby crowd. Hardly though!

I'm just watching the recording of it; its already 31-0 to the All Blacks.
The main difference between this game and last week's game,- which was the same as the difference between that game and the preceding week, - is that Ireland's players are unable to match the intensity and commitment in their tackling that they gave last week
Which is understandable at the end of a gruelling 51-week season.
The fact is, you and the majority of the contributors to this thread would have hoped to have been able to make these same comments a week ago, but you've had to hold your fire.
Celebrating embarrassing results like this isn't going to make rugby any less of a threat to GAA dominance, though

I would have thought it was the All Blacks who took the Irish challenge too lightly last week after giving them a hiding the week before, and todays game was all about putting them back in their box.

Without going into today's utter embarrassment of a result, on a more general level in the four years I've been on this site, it never ceases to amaze me the scorn heaped on the sport of rugby and Irish teams and players in particular.
I really can't understand the mentality. It is perfectly understandable not to be an admirer of a given game, but the constant venom and insults thrown at the Irish/Munster team and players like O'Gara is childish in the extreme at this stage. I understand a lot of people on this site are from Limerick and obviously many of you seem paranoid at the success, both in terms of results and marketing of Munster/Irish rugby and the large fan base it has built up in the last decade.
Can I just ask, is it not your own fault? If you are all so concerned with the rise in popularity in rugby in your given counties and its perceived impact on the support and strength of the GAA in your area, why aren't you doing something about it?? Instead of sitting in front of a laptop revelling in the defeats of the rugby lads, why aren't you out at your county's matches!!! Why aren't you consistently pressing your club and county officials to take the fight to rugby, and promote the GAA to the hilt.
It bewilders me when I look at somewhere like Limerick and read people go on about the detrimental effect rugby is having on the GAA there, when you all seem to be tearing each other apart anyway and your county board's recent record suggests it is one of the most inept in the country. How many of you will be at Limerick's match this evening?
As a final point, the fact so many who have posted on rugby topics on here see absolutely no irony in lambasting Irish players and rugby teams, while being huge Premiership soccer fans is scarcely believable.
Do you not think the unceasing and overwhelming coverage of English soccer on this island is far more of a threat to the GAA's popularity than four professional provincial teams with core support of between 5,000-20,000 depending on which team!!
Just a thought....

I made a similar comment on another thread about Ireland v NZ. It's damning really the amount of glee people take in other's misfortunes, especially those of fellow countrymen.

There was certainly some of that, as I mentioned when putting last week's near-miss in its proper perspective.
But the critical factor was that our lads were both mentally and physically drained, after last week's Herculean effort.
A good comparison could be with Northampton's first-half performance in last year's Heineken Cup Final: THEY put so much into breaking Leinster in that first half, that they'd nothing left on the resumption

I fully agree. I can never understand the mentality of those who want to see Irish teams beaten. Look, rugby is a minority sport here and we can rarely hope to beat one of the three southern nations.

the willingness of some posters here to completely miss the point of an argument sometimes amazes me.
any self respecting sports fan worth their salt would not revel in anyones embarrassing defeat however the point being made repeatedly is that the hype that surrounds our rugby and association football team is without doubt wholly unjustified.
Ireland are not a world class rugby team and in recent years have proved the point
ireland are not a word class football team and have proved that as well
the irish media and a portion of the population would have the rest of us believe that bod/rog/paulie/keane/duff/given are of a standard and yes they are but none are of the world class variety nor are national sides they play for.
it has nothing at all to do with the gaa or being anti other sports its just unfortunately a fact of life and thats about the size of it ladies.

True other than as regards O'Driscoll. He is genuine world class.
