According to John Waters in today's paper he is. He also says that Roy is "the one with the most heart, soul and intelligence" as well as being the "greatest footballer this country has produced."
I wonder where would the likes of Giles, Brady, McGrath etc, rank alongside Roy?

It's hardly controversial, only Brady could challenge but Keane achieved so much that the vote will go to him. Is Waters using Keane's utterings to claim that the Irish only do anything if there is a ------- up involved? He made that point very well with George Hook recently.

Naw. Not as good as McGrath and about equal to Giles probably.
When all is said and done he is most remembered for his 'engine' and tackling rather than skill, passing or goals.

In terms of success, he's the best. No question. But when I hear "best", I think technique and genuine footballing skill. It has to be Liam Brady. Gifted footballer, played for Juventus at a time when only the best foreign players played abroad. If that's not an endorsement of his abilities...he shades Paul McGrath for me.

Certainly not. He is a long wqy from the greatest Irish footballer. Well behind the likes of Giles, Brady, Paul McGrath, Charlie Hurley, Tony Dunne. and, of course, George Best.

Certainly not. He is a long way from the greatest Irish footballer. Well behind the likes of Giles, Brady, Paul McGrath, Charlie Hurley, Tony Dunne. and, of course, George Best. As for the best Cork player, IMO that would be the afore mentioned Charlie Hurley.

Yes he is. And by a long distance.
Paul McGrath is only a sentimental call imo. A player capable of great performances and a great player at times but not at Keanes level throughout his career. He cuts a bit of a tragic figure which the Irish love and so over time he seems to be a better player now than when he was when he was playing.
Keane divides opinion for a number of reasons but taken only as a footballer he was the best we have produced. He is a straight talker too which most of us cannot handle. We prefer to talk around the subject rather than get to the crux of the matter.

Best was outside the jurisdiction.

Yeah he is. A lot of people only remember his tough tackling attitude to the game but he could play ball aswell. I loved watching Keano play in his prime, he could run games by himself and for a defensive enough player, he scored a few goals.
His off-field actions will always put him down in my estimation though. Best player yes, favourite player no.

Keane was our greatest by a long distance. While not being the greatest at any individual skill of the game , passing, heading, shooting etc he was sufficiently competent in all of them but his presence on the pitch, his self belief, drive and his ability to influence and dictate a game was simply unrivalled during his generation.

And Bertie Ahern was our greatest politician according to Waters on the Late Late Show. Keane was a great player, who played in a great United team, Giles I think was just as driven with far superior technique and Brady was undoubtedly the most gifted of them all. McGrath really could have been the greatest if it wasn't for the personal demons that afflicted him.

How do you know, have you seen Johnny Giles, Don Givens, Davy Langan, Noel Cantwell, Austin Hayes, Charlie Hurley, Eamon Dunphy, Nailer, Paddy Coad play. How does he compare with those. What were their strengths and weaknesses compared to sick note.
WTF is John Waters

As with the argument of modern day footballers vs the Dublin/Kerry era , hard to compare given the changes to the game since Giles and Givens played. Dunphy by his own admission was a modest footballer. All things being equal Keane was the dominant player in the English league for a decade and brought an average enough Irish team to a world cup on his own ( regardless of what happened thereafter!!!) we haven't had another player who you could say that about.
That aside , a fella from Sunderland once told me Charlie Hurley was the best player they ever had.

With all due respects Boston, I think thats a load of auld waffle,to be honest I couldn't give a sh1t what sick note did in the English league, and if that is your yardstick then he pales into insignificance when compared with Giles. The rest of it is Roy of the Rovers comic book type sh1te, 'brought an average enough Irish team to a world cup on his own', ran back into the goal donning the yellow jersey as he ran just in time to pull down the decent cross coming into the box, threw off the yellow and donned the no 3 to take it off Shay before passing it out to himself in midfield, getting the ball out wide to Killer who he rushed up to take over from before sending a decent cross into the box for Trigger (except of course it's not Trigger, its SICK NOTE) to bury the ball in the net, all the time of course kicking lumps out of any lad in his immediate vicinity. You're better than that.
