Front page of the sports section of the Sunday Times. The agent Damien O'Brien was the broker in both deals but has decided not to play ball with the FAI for not playing ball with him.
I couldnt see any logic in not allowing the tournament at Thomond Park. Losing an August friendly against England at the Aviva is a costly thing from a financial perspective

Its easy understand why its not allowed.
Everyone would make money out of this Thomond Park Soccer venture - that is, everyone except Limerick soccer and Irish soccer.
The event promotions company would, Munster Rugby would, the IRFU would, the clubs involved would, but the FAI would not, and nor would Limerick FC whose patch the event would be taking place on. Irish soccer is run on 'patch' rules, for example if an event is to happen the fai have to give permission and so have the senior club whose 'patch' the event is taking place on. Limerick FC were not going to be involved in the tournament but in an attempt to appease them they were offered a minimal and dare i say insulting fee to be a sort of 'host' club (who dont play!). Limerick FC rightly refused this.
The FAI and Irish soccer, and indeed Limerick FC, make a balls of a lot of things, but they got this one spot on. This is a venture that will have no benefit to Limerick or Irish soccer and is simply a business venture. Not a red cent would go back into Irish Football unlike other events (like the Dublin Super Cup for example).
Regarding the England friendly, whats stopping the FAI just contacting the English FA and organising a friendly like theydo for every single other friendly. They dont need the promoter in question.

It would have been of benefit to the Limerick economy though. We are told that every sellout in Thomond Park is worth X amount to the Limerick economy. Surely the same would apply for a soccer tournament that brings in Europe's top sides.
How much were Limerick FC offered???

A few grand, nothing in comparison to what they should be making from a soccer tournament on what is their patch. The economy does'nt come in to it. The FAI and Limerick FC are right to put their foot down and demand that money would have to be made that would be going back into the game, and not the pockets of businessmen. Why should the FAI sanction an event that Rugby would make money out of? It makes no sense at all. Would the IRFU or GAA do that? No is the answer, so why would the FAI? They made the right stand on this one and Limerick FC did too. Just because Thomond Park is in place that doesnt mean it can be used willy nilly for Soccer at the expense of Limerick FC who are making great efforts to get big name challenge matches etc (which, ironically, the FAI fcuked up for them last time!)

What's Damian O Briens background besides I believe being from Ennis ?
Is he the main person behind Iconic Worldwide Events ?
The Company is registered in UK with address in Manchester.
He seems to give the impression that he has the power so it might be worth spending small fee to get the last accounts filed by the Company - might reveal a lot !!

There are a limited number of friendly internationls that can be played in a year. To suggest that the FAI should hand up one to "benefit the Limerick economy" (when really it really benefits an agent and private companies) is bizare in the extreme.

I dont know anything about Damien O'Brien or his accounts. However he was willing to bring England to the AVIVA at the request of the FAI.
He was also willing to bring 4 top European sides to Limerick. At present there is ZERO income coming to Limerick. If he got his way, Limerick FC would get a small few quid, the FAI would get a small few quid, Thomond Park would get rent money, there would be people coming to Limerick, hotels being used. It might not be that profitable that they could justify paying much more than a few grand to Limerick FC but its more than they have now that its cancelled.

Theres a little more to this than meets the eye.
It's not as simplistic as you make it out that much I do know, it makes good news for the journalist in question.By the way I'm no fan of the FAI but it isnt all about their supposed intransigence.
Anyway back to extra time

And I think there may be something in the contract with Aviva over naming rights.

The FAI get no small few quid. Limerick FC get little or nothing. Meanwhile Damien O'Brien and Munster Rugby roll in the cash off the back of a soccer tournament on Limerick FC's patch when they themselves are trying their utmost to organise big friendlies.
Im with Limerick FC and the FAI on this one.
And again the point about the local economy is irrelevant and has nothing to do with the issue. Its nowhere near a valid enough reason for Limerick FC or the FAI to even consider allowing this to go ahead.
This is a business venture with zero benefit to Irish Football or the local club. Limerick FC and th FAI are well within their rights to hold their ground. The should be commended for it. If they dont look after their own patch it'll be open season. If Limerick Gaa took a similar stand in similar circumstances we'd be delighted with them. Go talk to any Limerick FC soccer fan in the know and they'll tell you where they stand on this too.
And Damien O'Brien is not in the least needed by the FAI "to bring England to the Aviva"....who do people reckon this fella is??!! If Ireland and England is to happen at the Aviva the FAI will be the ones organising it themselves, like they have done every other friendly. It aint rocket science, they are in constant weekly contact with the English FA and other neighbouring FA's and enjoy good relations.

That's what I was thinking. How could this person be the gate keeper to an Ireland v England game.
How do these friendlies work. UEFA/FIFA give sole permission to the association within each country to sanction all soccer matches?
But did sell control of their games to somebody else, like Spain did? That how I remember it from the Limerick FC Barcelona situation.

Indeed as the FAI are so good at ensuring that funds trickle down to the grassroots and not wasted on say paying their chief executive more than his Spanish or English counterpart!!!
Believe me, the people keeping junior soccer clubs going have nothing but contempt for the FAI - their wheeze two years ago when sales for Aviva tickets were disappointing was to try and force every club to buy two 10 year tickets!!
