I always recommend this guy on here. He should put me on commission!

Good choice, good prices, good advice and tutorials, good and cheap delivery, and he has all the other bits and pieces you'll need.

I bought one in ALDI awhile back, cost €80 at the time but they will probably have them for less the next time they're on offer.
3 year guarantee with them as well.

You normally get what you pay for with these boxes. In the past the boxes and Tvs they sold were not suitable for Irish Saorview. Others sold lately were, but because they were not saorview approved, meant that the EPG (Electronic program Guide) did not work. So the teletext, subtitles and TV guide didn't work on them.
They may work on the ones they are selling now, I don't know. If they are saorview approved then they they are sure to work in Ireland.
Last bit of advice is if you live near the north or the east cost of Ireland, then you may be able to pick up Freeview in the UK as well. So you will need a box compatible with both digital signals from each country. You may also need two aerials, but it's worth the effort. Talk to your local installer. I'm sure he'll know if you can pick up the UK signal at your house. Plenty of advice and reception maps on the site mentioned above.

No, but saorview is free, so if you are happy with what is free on saorview then you can stop paying UPC. Throw in Free sat with one of the combo-boxes and there is very little left bar the sky superscription channels (movies & sports) that you won't have.
To pick up Freesat you will of course need a satellite dish.
Plenty of info on the site mentioned above.

The one I got in ALDI is Saorview approved and it works perfect, EPG, Teletext the lot.

A mate of mine in Dublin lives beside Fairview and has a daughter called Sorcha. The elderly neighbour gets her name muddled frequently and calls her "Saorview".
No word of a lie.
Sorry I can't help with the technical stuff, but I wouldn't be great on it.

You should get a new saor view approved tv set i bought one for 125 euro. Off the top of my head i think it was a 22 ins
You will have less cables and need less sockets great set and great picture 7 channels free for ever, and no more to pay unless big phil decided to put a tax on it as well.

Is there any chance the Irish channels will be put up on the Freesat platform eventually.
Why they didn't do that is beyond me.

Have a look here:
http://www.saorview.ie/about-saorview/saorsat/
and here:
http://www.saorview.ie/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Consumer-SAORSAT-final.pdf
I can't remember what direction you will need to point the dish, but it isn't 28E (Sky). So all new gear needed.
The problem with making say RTE available free on satellite is that RTE have to pay for programs based on customers viewing. So if they broadcast free (say a soccer match), they have a hell of a lot more viewers, and so have to pay a hell of a lot more to the supplier.

I hve a TV capable of receiving Saorview so I don't need a box.
However, the reception is very poor. Most of the time I can't get any channels shown and when they do they break up frequently. I'm able to get the terrestrial channels OK.
I guess the problem is my aerial? Anyone any experience of this?

I got a souped up combined FreeSat/terrestrial Saorview box, with Sky Plus type features, recently.
I did have to replace my old aerial with a digital-spec one.
Had to get extra LMBs with the dish for the FreeSat too to allow it to record channels simultaneously.
Expensive, but a good set up. Able to pause live tv etc.

SAORVIEW RESCAN REQUESTED AFTER 2PM ON 10TH JULY
In order to accommodate essential transmitter upgrade work, viewers receiving the SAORVIEW service are asked to re-scan their televisions or set-top-boxes after 2pm on Tuesday 10th July. Instructions will be found in your TV or set-top box manual. For more information go to Information Guide for re-scan box or tv or call the information helpline 1890 222 012.
After rescanning, viewers should see a slight change to the channel line up on their EPG. RTÉ News Now will swap places with 3e so that the new line-up will be:
• 3e on position 5, and
• RTÉ News Now on position 6.
This change has been made at the request of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland

I have a question regarding Saorview that i can't find an answer to.
When i built the house i put a TV point in each room. These were all linked to a box in the attic, which is connected to the aerials. Can i install 1 Saorview box in the attic, or do i need a separate Saorview box connected to each TV?

What's the box in the attic?
Generally you will need a saorview box or saorview capable TV at each viewing point.
If you put just one box in the attic, you will need some way to convert the box output (scart or HDMI) to coax, and then split this however many times. You will only be able to watch the same channel on each TV, and you will need a unit such as a "magic eye" to change channels on the box remotely. All that is messy and not really an option.
Being on Nore-side picking up freeview UK may be an option for you. Bear this in mind when buying a box, aerials, etc.

this item will take the input from via scart and convert it to RF coax, then just put that coax into your distribution box in the attic and retune your TV to the frequency that the box outputs on. This unit also has the magic eye so you can change the station from the tv, though there is only one magic eye you would need to buy a few more if you have multiple tv. Also make sure your distribution box has a magic eye pass though feature otherwise it will not work.

I have this box myself but connected to a freesat box and works a treat.
